My wife and I were enjoying the game until we had to deal with SE's customer service. My wife's account was hacked shortly after release and customer service was just plain hateful and very unhelpful so we both moved on. If they wanted to ruin their reputation the CS team is definately helping.

Well 5 minutes is all it takes to reaize how terrible the game actually is. If you get frustrated with a games lousy UI and early game content, why would you want to stay on for anything later?

Yeah.. but what's the point of writing this when 1.19 is gonna overhaul damn near everything?

Same thing that was said before they did their first review of the game.  Why write this now when the new patch is going to overhaul everything.  Guess what?  It didn't.  The game is still a horrible mess.  Square Enix became a victim of their own arrogance, believing they could release a game with this many flaws based solely on their name.  The first thing that should have been done to improve the game, before any patches or updates, was to fire anyone involved in creating this mess.

MMORPG took almost a year to finally release a review on this game because it "needed time to mature" and you think they hate on the game?  Personally I feel MMORPG on the whole is biased towards the game as I have never seen them extend the same to another game on this site when it released unfinished.  The fact that despite going out of their way to try a put this game in the best light possible it still gets such bad reviews is a glowing testimate to just how bad the game really was and still is.  I have not played since launch and really have not read anything to make me tempted to dig out the disks and try it again.

If they were biased towards the game they would either have waited until we were paying subs, which will be when the devs feel it is up to scratch rather than expect the whole game to be changed after one patch and just copy and paste the previous review, you might notice that the other games websites have not reviewed the game again, because they know there is no point yet, because it is undergoing a complete overhaul.

I agree they gave it plenty of time, but they keep reviewing the same things, which is well known for anyone that checks the lodestone, what they review is not being patched, a post patch review is supposed to review the changes not the old things which have had no changes at all and dont mention the new things, which looks like the patch never existed appart from to change the version number at the top of the screen.

I believe in Square Enixes ability to revive this game and re-release it improved enough for wider audience to like it. Sadly, I'm afraid it's not happening anytime soon.

It is obvious that not only did they release this NOW even though it was written right after 1.18 was released ages ago just to troll, but that this idiot didn't play this game for shit, and even if he did, he was probably using some POS PC to do so. 75% of the garbage written here is downright BS, and the other 25% isn't worth mentioning.

Learn to fing play you moron, and next time you wanna sit on a fing article for 2 months, try rewriting it after the patch that is less than 1 week away. YOu ask most of the players that have actually PLAYED the game for the last year, and hey will tell you the game is not without it's faults, but the stuff your bitching about is the kind of thing an ignorant fucking noob would say.

TL:DR To the person that wrote this article: Go fuck yourself, you ignorant fing noob.

i'd write you one as a current player, but i am sure you wouldn't want to read mine either. i would go into details about what i dislike in the game and it wouldn't be as nice as the review is currently.

i am one of the many that has completely quit doing battle classes completely since the release of 1.18.

The offensive, insultive, and curse ridden PM I recieved for writing this article about sums up the sentiment "blind devotion". These are my views, taken as someone returning from launch, addressing the core issues I faced and was disatisfied with. Personally the things that put me off the game are still here. I haven't mentioned the end-game content etc, or insulted anyone for liking it, purely on an entertainment level for anyone wishing to get into it, FF14 still has too many hurdles to jump before the enjoyment comes.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/square-enix-says-ffxiv-greatly-damaged-final-fantasy-brand/

If the game is in a fine state aka ready to meet public expectation...i'm sure the ceo won't describe it as a work in progress or something that need redoing whole.

While some player may enjoy it now as it is....overall consensious(from what i gather) is that it's not ready yet.

I'm not sure what everyone was expecting from FF14, but it sticks true to the Final Fantasy franchise.  Some of the "problems" mentioned by people I actually like, and was expecting, since it's been that way since FF1.

Slow Combat - It's faster than most other Final Fantasy games.  I actually wish it was a little slower, like halfway between 11 and 14.  Final Fantasy has always had slow combat.  I mean the final battle in FF1 took over 10 minutes if you include all the talking.  In 14 combat is actually pretty quick, for a final fantasy game.  With a group of eight, killing monsters twice your level, you can down them in about 1 minute, maybe less.  WoW elites take longer than that.

The Menus - Again, I don't know what people expected. EVERY single FF game has had them.  Yes, it's not the best idea for PC games, however I totally expected it.

Cities Empty? - I'm not sure what server the Author is playing on, but on Selbina there's always at least 50 characters nearby at all times in the cities.  Some sitting around crafting, other's running around doing quests (I assume).  The inns always have about 5 billion people in them (exagerated of course).

Immersion - This game has it.  You just have to find it.  Fighting back the different tribes and the storyline are very immersive.  The storyline is great, if you take the time to read it.

In conclusion,  I'm not sure what everyone is expecting out of this game, but I've gotten almost everything I expected.

I also admit that maybe a week of play for me wasn't enough.

Should it take more than a week for a game to grab you and hook you?  As far as I'm concerned, a good game should be able to do that by the end of your first play session.

Sorry but I don't let Square off the hook that easily.  Last I checked they are not offering refunds for the orginal purchase price of the game and they did make many millions of dollars already regradless of if they are charging a sub fee or not.

Square released a very poor broken game with so many obvious issues there is no excuse what so ever for doing it.  It would be like your favorite fast food resturant giving thousands of people food posion because they served food they knew was bad than offering a free meal to try and make up for it.  I am sure some people would be happy with that but I wouldn't be because they still posioned me in the first place.

I think everyone should just chill out.

I do not think any article on this game or review should happen until SE decides to start charging people to play it.

That is when SE will say they have a good product worth playing.

Everyone should be ecstatic that  this title is a F2P right now minus the box purchase.  SE is losing so much money on this title and they know it.  Stop being so much haters

"ummm not true at all. the battle system since auto attack is quite slow. it is very boring to go out on a raptor party in a group of 8 and the auto attack kills the mobs before the tank even has time to grab hate. it is a rush fest to the point people have no deed to even buff up. why would anyone want to go kill mobs twice their level while ranking up when the sp caps on mobs that are 10 ranks above them? the mobs 10 ranks above you dies to auto attack in 10-15 seconds with an 8 person party"

The Menus - Again, I don't know what people expected. EVERY single FF game has had them.  Yes, it's not the best idea for PC games, however I totally expected it.

" the menu's i don't have a problem with. it's the fact that everything in your inventory and gear changes is done server side so each item you sell or change has to be done individually and it takes forever. similar items do not stack so if you are working on a class such as carpentar you will be selling 40+ of a mask at a time one itme at a time"

Cities Empty? - I'm not sure what server the Author is playing on, but on Selbina there's always at least 50 characters nearby at all times in the cities.  Some sitting around crafting, other's running around doing quests (I assume).  The inns always have about 5 billion people in them (exagerated of course).

" well my server was that way on release, but i can sit in front of the repair npc in uldah for a full day and i am lucky if i see 15-20 different people total in that day. granted, some days you do see alot more than others."

Immersion - This game has it.  You just have to find it.  Fighting back the different tribes and the storyline are very immersive.  The storyline is great, if you take the time to read it.

"i have multiple capped classes and there is more immersion in crafting items than the story does. you do not get the feeling of "i wonder what happens next" until you hit the r42 main scenario quest. the class quests are horribly designed in most of them involving just running around to talk to multiple npc's. the sidequests are please help me by going and killing 10 dodo's and they are located here on your map. leves were ok, but as in anything else once you do the same thing over and over it becomes very boring."

In conclusion,  I'm not sure what everyone is expecting out of this game, but I've gotten almost everything I expected.

"people expected a fun game. that is the reason for the mass exodus in december. i expected a final fantasy game that had a deep story and a live and active world."

I was pretty much disgusted with SE when FFXIV came out. I felt they botched what should have been an extremely easy launch, having a formula for a game that should have been pure win. I came back after 1.18 and found a much more improved game, not perfect obviously, but I could see the changes they were making. Then again, I played from level 1 to 30 in patch 1.18 so maybe I am just getting a better picture of what changes there were unlike the reviewer? He didn't even touch on most of the changes (or any?) that went into 1.18 for good or bad, but to call the combat slow once you have a decent set of moves is pretty arrogant.

Now after I hit level 30 I decided to focus more on LOTRO again because of Isengard coming out, but I've kept the game installed for when 1.19 comes out because the patch is so huge I feel like it is going to put the game into a payable sub state. It's almost overwhelming how big this patch is and I am really looking forward to giving it an honest shot. Come on seriously though, you do a review, supposedly based around patch 1.18 (questionable at best) and you wait till a few days before patch 1.19 is out to give your opinion on where FFXIV is lol. What did you expect? Flowers and chocolate?

Arrogant sums up the entire stable of MMORPG.com staff who currently write "about" FFXIV.

One has only to look at the reviews from just about every major game site last year, to realize that MMORPG.com isn't on some type of vendetta.  Blind devotion is as bad as blind hatred.  There is NO excuse for releasing a game in the state that FFXIV was in at launch.

Its been almost a year now. If they were going to fix many of the major problems, they have the resources to have done so.  Sure, they have smoothed out some of the rough edges, but the underlying design philosophy remains the same.  Perhaps SE should stick to console games.

This and the fact that MMORPG waited, what was it -- something like nine months? -- to give their first review of the game.  This title has been handled with kid gloves since it's release.  Instead of giving it the awful review that it deserved at the point of release, they put it off for ages, which should have given the game time to improve.  To my knowledge, they haven't been anywhere near as forgiving with any other title, most which are reviewed within thirty days.  In fact, I can't remember any other game that was given a similar amount of leeway.

The fact that the game still doesn't measure up isn't the reviewer's fault.  They've been patient to the point of favoritism already.

Haha. It's the "Oh my god they are going to release 1.19 which will change EVERYTHING" argument again. You did this last time with 1.18, folks. Give it up.

MMORPGs are no longer about the mass multi-user anymore *sadly*

9/27/11 11:26:43 AM#56

What a lot of words in this article just to say NO ;)

I played at launch, gave it a new try after that 'miracle patch' 1.14, but it was as lame as it was before. I truely beleave 1.18 or 1.19 won't make that much of a difference if a MMO is in the core so badly developerd compared to it's predecessors.

It's like Adam said. Final Fantasy is about lore and story, but in FF14 you won't find that a lot. It's more about grinding the same leves over and over again. :(

Last I checked I did already pay to play this game when I bought the retail version.

I do not think any article on this game or review should happen until SE decides to start charging people to play it.

They aren't charging people to play it?  I thought you had to purchase the game.  Nice, something to do this weekend.

Theres no reason for people who actually play FF to get so defensive over this review. If you dont believe it, then dont. Dont act like a child and nerd rage all over the place. Obviously a lot of us have the played at release (including myself) and no matter what they do ill never play it again. It was THAT bad to me.

Quite possibly one of the worst reviews the site has ever published.

Is this a joke? I had to check the calendar to make sure I didn't magically travel forward in time to April 1st.

This is not a review of 1.18, far from it.
