I think I still have the 45 days free thing to use on DCUO from all that botched security nonsense, the game might be worth me dusting off just before it goes F2P and using that as it isn't that bad for logging in once in a while for a quick bit 'o fun, just wasn't worth subbing to. All depends how CoX goes with it's F2P though as that game is one of my old time favourites.

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Came out before the PS3, had no console port of it, nor were there ever plans to.

It also didn't suck.

That last part is subjective, of course. I also didn't mind NGE that much, as the game was already completely ruined by the CU. Don't know why no one ever mentions the Combat Upgrade... I bought a lot of those commemorative plaques from other players in-game and arranged them in a bonfire in my bunker before temporarily canceling my sub - That's how much I hated the CU. NGE was just "Meh" after that.

Warhammer Online will be F2P in 2012. I believe I saw an article title on this very site.

Wish people would stop assuming Warhammer will go p2w its a pvp centric game so it wouldn't work, period.

Anyway from what I've read DCUO should have been b2p (like Guild Wars) from the get go still can't believe Marvel let Soe ruin such a famous IP. Pull the plug and take back your license before Soe can do further damage with their model.

SAN DIEGO – September 19, 2011 – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) today announced a new free-to-play business model for its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game DC Universe Online (DCUO) — where players have the freedom to become legendary fighting alongside DC Comics icons like Superman, Batman and The Jokerin an ever-evolving online action adventure that has already logged more than 42 million hours of super-powered gameplay action by players since its launch earlier this year.

Beginning late October, players will be able to download and access DCUO for free on both the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. As part of this transition, SOE is introducing three new access levels to the game: Free, Premium and Legendary. All three levels will provide access to open world gameplay and missions, general game updates and fixes to the game, with each level offering different game options and benefits.

“When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3™gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.”

Smedley added, “Our philosophy embraces learning from our experience and as a pioneer in the free-to-play space with proven successful games like Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures, we believe this new model will expand the DCUO experience and offer more options that cater to every type of player so they can play the game in a way that fits them.”

All three levels provide access to the current game, but allow differing tiers of convenience and flexibility. The levels are:

  • Free: New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.

  • Premium: Any player who has spent at least $5 USD (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.

  • Legendary: Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 USD monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits.

More information on the DCUO free-to-play access levels can be found here: dcuniverseonline.com/free.

DC Universe Online combines immersive environments and fascinating story arcs with fast-paced, physics-based combat, allowing players to pick up buses and other objects in the environment, fly into the air and throw them at enemies; run up the sides of buildings to engage in melee brawls while shooting flames of fire from their hands; or cling to the side of buildings while using a grappling hook to pull flying opponents out of the sky – all while fighting alongside or against the legendary characters of DC Comics and charting their own path to legendary.

DC Universe Online is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on behalf of DC Entertainment. For more information about DC Universe Online, visit www.DCUniverseOnline.com.

I think it says something about your game when discerning players wont pay for your product.

Being a long time fan of City of Heroes, I was moderately interested in seeing another Developers take on the "Super Hero Genre" until I saw SOE was the developer.  Only looked at it two more times after that and wasn't interested either time.  Last thing that killed my interest though was when a friend told me he max'd out in less than a month of casual playing.

Thanks SOE for another botched game.

Well Freemium is the wave of the future with regard to the payment model for MMOGs. Basically tiered like they are doing with DCUO with a cash shop. Done right it works very well. As long as there are enough a la carte options and no pay to win...

I will definitely be playing when it goes F2P and hell I will probably drop some cash in the cash shop. It's not a bad game and the combat is hella fun.

um how about no? double utilizing called "freeminimum" is the worst of both worlds shown in p2w games such as DDO. Lotro and Aoc.

It was a great game, but ya, ultimately it was hard to justify a sub fee. It never quite felt like a meaty enough MMO experience for me to play as my "MMO". But as a F2P i will be happy to play it every now and then on my ps3! Good news!!

The fast leveling kinda makes sense when you consider what they were going for. SoE said they wanted DCUO to be a fun superhero game you could keep playing month after month. They didn't design it to be a traditional MMO with the normal grind. With this in mind, if they were able to pump out enough content each month to keep players with something new to do this might have worked.

It was a fun game, I mean it had combat that you could do just for fun it wasn't all about the grind and rewards like most MMOs.

Hmm this will allow to get some extra bucks of the title for producer before it die finally. Nothing unexcpected and exciting.

Notthing to see here imho. Move along.

Not sure you played them these games are not P2W. Lotro actually has best F2P model around it lets you unlock all game for free if u wonna grind. AoC ist even F2P it is just extended trial.

And btw I bought Lotro 1 year ago vanila + MoM + Mirkwood, and i m playing end game raids and dungeons ( plus have 1500 TP) without spending a cent since then.

Selling xp potions, scrolls, gear = p2w, period.

I don't know what TP is or are but sounds like something outside the game.

Proof that all super hero mmo's are poorly planned?

Maybe one day a game will go free to play futher their development process, instead of replacing the metaphorical sustenance that a game needs to maintain a profit.

MAYBE, one day there will be a super hero mmo that creates a true action based combat system, with a core idea of balance and mortality, but then again that would kind of be an oxymoron... balance and super hero mmos... HA!
