What I don't get is.. what is it with some people being so hung up cartoon-like graphics. It's been compared to Pixar's style... Does that mean these people won't watch Pixar movies either?

What's the big deal? It's a graphics/animation style. It's not like a guy's masculinity is being challenged if they enjoy it... Or maybe it is for/to some people, and that's the problem. They don't want their friends to laugh at or tease them, or something.

saw the same thing even with game consoles. I saw people who refused to buy a GameCube - even though there were games they wanted to play on it - because it was "too colorful", they wanted the "badass looking" XBox or PS2. Again... Who cares? Is it the games you're buying the system for, or how it looks?

People get way hung up on superficial things.

.....

As for Wildstar... I'm definitely watching it. Though, I'm doubtful that they're going to "change entire design elements" based on player feedback, and still expect to create "the deepest MMO ever", unless they draw a very strict and defined line that they will absolutely not cross, no matter how many people "demand" it.

For all the complaining we see from people claiming, they want a grander and deeper MMO experience, time and again, once such a game is released, or even just announced, you immediately start seeing the threads pop up... "X is too involved", "Y is too complicated", "Z takes too long".. "'A' should be simpler", "Make B less detailed, we don't care about the lore"...

You'll see WoW referenced time and again as having some feature, and because WoW is so popular, Wildstar should have it, too... I mean,t hey want to be successful... don't they?". Often, those very same people will then be complaining that the game is too similar, doesn't stand out enough and is "just another knock-off" after they've gotten exactly what they asked for.

This is happening in the official FFXIV forums. People are referencing WoW left and right for "how FFXIV should do things"... More instancing, faster leveling, more mounts/flying mounts, random party/dungeon finder with automatic teleport to the dungeon, etc. etc. And in case after case, these people are citing WoW as their reference.

It's great that the Wildstar team is taking feedback and willing to make changes... Hopefully they stick to their guns and don't start making concessions to the "we want we want we want" crowd... or they'll end up with just another shallow, derivative example of "more of the same".

Few talking points here...

  • The Eldan are the race in WildStar. The Eldar are the Games Workshop property.
  • I believe the "deep" that Carbine are referring to is doable, but as many have said it does remain to be seen.
However, I can't recall a game that has a branching questline based on un-signposted player action (rather than just conversation dialog choices) and this is what Carbine are planning according to their press presentations.

I'm all for reserving judgement, but also coming at a game from a position of knowledge (hence my repeated recommendation of WildStar Central, where you can view the press presentation and some interesting developer interviews).

Carbine have also said they are very open to working with their potential playerbase - adding in what works, and removing what doesn't. Even at this early stage they are watching and listening to fansites - what people like and don't like.

Get involved, and maybe help shape a game you want to play.

Love the art style.  Very well done presentation and if they really do give a full experience to all those paths it's going to be an amazing game.  NCsoft's portolio is looking better and better here in the west.

I was won over by the trailer and not many trailers can do that for me.

I was even more suprised on how the game looked and played, it was better then I expected.

NCSoft steps towards having western developers looks to be very promosing.   A great thing about Wildstar and of course GW2 is that Carbine Studios and ArenaNet are changing how MMO's are played and experienced.

Now the game just has to do well, that's the hard part. =)

Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

It really annoys me all these people here that keep chanting their mantra "if there is classes there is no depth" crap.  So instead they want everyone to have access to every ability out there...and guess what, you still end up with a select few options on how to pick those abilites, and anyone who acttually USES the "more depth" to customize their characters are just ridiculed because they did not pick the FOTM set of abilities.  Truth is, the classes system people just want another reason to be dicks in the game, and making fun of people that picked abilities that the "elite" think are not the best is common practice in these kinds of game.

So you may not have classes, but you still have a set number of "viable" builds that are accepted to be the best and everything else is looked at as pointless.

Most of the stuff the devs are saying is completely stereotypical hype-generating marketing speak for this type of game. We've heard it all before, and it doesn't matter until the actual machanics are explained and we get to try the game. With so many failures and formulaic game designs in this genre in the last decade, it only makes sense to maintain a healthy skepticism when developers say things like "Deepest world EVAR!!!"

I totally agree here. Devs with every genre shout that their game is gonna be something we never seen before, something completely new, something deeper or bigger then ever before, etc. How many shooters haven't said they where totally different yet once you play it its just the same gameplay you been playing forever.

Or what to think about Age of Conan, how many promises they made and how little actually happened in the game or got inserted with hardly anything exciting about it. In the trailers they made you believe you could build entire cities where ever you wanted...once the game was released you could only build them in  instanced zones on locations the devs wanted you to build and hell you couldn't even decide the looks or locations of buildings cause the devs had decided that for you already.

And seeing NCsoft is behind this game im not gonna expect to much about it. For me NCsoft makes great games that  feel great for 10 minutes then its get boring and their games tend to end up in grindfests. Even with guild wars 2 its rather wait and see if their promises are met and work. It looks good with them and they know how  to make you intrested but once i get to play their games it feels "meh" rather quickly. I still hope they proof me wrong about what i think of them.

Frankly I happen to love the artstyle. Has a Joe Madureira, east meets west anime feel to it.

Wish it was a coop rpg rather than a mmorpg. Or at least a GW style game, and without subscription.

I'm quite interested about this game. This is definitely different from many other MMORPGs. I want to roll in a Scientist. :)

To all the skeptics, there's really no point because we haven't seen nor played the game. It's so funny how many people complain that all MMOs today are the same with very minimal innovation. But once a game that seems very innovative is shown, they are very skeptical about it. What in the world will it take to please these guys? They seem to dislike anything and everything.

If they keep a high level of humor in their game i'll definitly play it just for that aspect. I loved when my WhiteWyrm transformed into a wandering healer in Uo, and the many crazy coding stuff that slipped into this game. So that single aspect will make me try the game.

People simply can't create fun for themselves!

9/08/11 6:09:06 AM#117

If Lucent Heart excites people and makes money, then this will. I choose not to play because of class definitions.

I struggle not with life, money, emotions, and world, but against old mindsets and selves to be proven obsolete in a age and time of rapid changes. Go create fun, so you can have fun.

1) "deepest" mmo? please define "deep" in mmo context and then we can talk

2) it seems a bit contrived. ok, they acknowledge the different gamer types (tho it's debatable whether there are types at all.. i'd say that there are mmo "styles of experience" with some players preferring one while most vary between several depending on the mood, season etc. but i digress) Anyway, they didn't really say anything about the actual mechanics which are supposed to make this "depth" happen. Until they do I'll put it into the "promising but not worth the hype"category. Show us the MEAT, man!

3) I don't like the graphics. It's not that they're cartoony... jeez TF2 is cartoony but in a cool way. It's just too much -too garish, too everything. When they say "Pixar look" then I don't see it as something appealing (I will puke if I see another rascally grin). And besides, it looks even more Pixary than Pixar itself. Sacharine overdose.

Well if they have classes and levels, there will not be any depth, your avatar will be just like every other avatar of that particular skillset

So the sandboxers are now getting to own and control what depth means in the industry.  lol.  I didn't vote for it.

You cannot have depth when your avatar is shoehorned into a class/level system, there is no flexibility in developing your character, you have to fit the mold they give you.

And you know for a fact there is no depth within the same class?

It's not a case of sandboxers controlling what depth means. It's been an understood, though apparently not by some here, that depth has always meant and having many, many options. A class system by definition prevents it from being this. You only get those things that are in your class structure. A game with depth allows you to pick from all things available within the game.

So, look at UO, early SWG, Darkfall, Asheron's Call or any game that allows you, the player, to put together a combination of skills as opposed to picking a pre-packaged "class".

Oh, and honestly, if you look at 99% of the class based games, the "new" abilities you get as you move toward level cap are for the most part re-hashes of earlier abilities. Depth implies variety. Rehash is not variety.

You can have many, many options without necessarily being able to pick everything and anything.

You did not even read what Khalathwyr wrote, your response was just a mindless "I am right so anything you say is wrong" reaction.   Once you are locked into a class/level system there can be no depth as your ability to choose is completely limited by class and level.

BTW thanks Khalathwyr for providing a much better explanation of my point, guess I was being lazy.

I am not a sandbox bigot, I have enjoyed many class/level based games, it is just that when an article attempts to imply depth in a game when there really isn't much of it, I just had to disagree.  This could be a very fun game to play even if it will not have great depth.

I think they don't talk about deep combat system (or not only anyway), I understood their deep approach goes to storytelling rather. Tbh it doesn't matter if you're mage, ranger or warrior if you want to be explorer or killer. In storytelling, class/level doesn't really have to be bad thing, maybe even good thing as it can force you to diversify (different overboard scenario where from everyone knows everything -> everyone will do everything the same way (the easiest)). Pretty much like P&P games, which can be very deep despite levels and classes.

If they deliver what they promise, it will be fantastic game. But it would have to be fairly dynamic world, or possible "quests" will dry out very very fast. I can imagine how it can be done... but not sure if devs can be faster than players :)
