So this morning I wakied up n stuff yknoe doing my thing.  Going to the shower n stuff walking back to my laptop and trying to turn it on and then it woulnt x.x  I saw the battery and power connector lights not lit up so I was like "Ohh it was unplugged!"  then I looked and it was all plugged o.o

Anyways!  Now Im here trying to figure out what killed my laptop x.x   Im sure its a motherboard problem since the power brick lights up just fine.  But the laptop just doesnt turn on!  Tried battery only, power chord only, both, and neither.  And its still not working x.x Id open it up but my mom took all my screwdrivers for the laptop x.x

Anyways...I havent been playing any demanding games on it.  Just Battle for Middle Earth 2 and League of Legends and heat shouldnt be an issue since it doesnt even reach 70C x.x  I turn it off at night or when Im not using it...

So what wouldve killed my laptop? T_T 

Hmm not sure, mobo is likely, although I've seen bizarre power issues with laptops. But you say that you don't leave it on overnight? hmm... Do you use your laptop with it actually in your lap? Sometimes depending on where the power connection is when you use laptops on your lap (a ridiculous notion I know) the connector can bend so it won't get power anymore and even if the light is on on the power brick the laptop still isn't getting power. But the rest of the battery would've had to of drained for that to make sense and if you turn it off before you go to bed mobo seems more likely :(

The first step would be to accurately test your power brick... the light may come on, but that does not mean that the correct power and amperage is making it to the laptop.

If you have a multi-tester you can test this yourself... if not, the easiest way to test it is to go too Best Buy, buy a new power brick (they have universal ones there... bring your old one in for comparison) and try it out.

Try it with the battery attached, and the battery pulled out (the battery may have short in it causing the board to not power up... this can happen if the battery's temperature changes quite a bit... gets hot, then cold, then hot, etc...).

If it does not work, then return the new power brick for a refund.

It will be mainboard related if it's not the power brick... it is under any warranty?

There is a piece of equipment inside a laptop, usually mounted on the motherboard, called the DC-DC converter. It takes the power from your power supply, and then converts that to the proper voltages and currents to both run the laptop and charge the battery.

They are very fickle, and prone to just going dead. And since they are usually built into the motherboard, require an entire motherboard replacement to fix. It doesn't take much at all to blow these things up in most laptops: voltage sags a bit at the wall, too much heat over time (it could be 70C at your processor, but while charging the battery the DC-DC convertor could be well over that temperature - it's in a different spot and the temperature RTD probably isn't there), voltage spikes from the wall, worn wires in the power cord shorting out (this is very common) - the list goes on and on. If the main culprit were heat or static, it could very well have died while it was unplugged and shut down. It's possible it died sometime while you were using it last, and you were running on only battery power for the last bit. Hard to say, but just because the computer isn't running doesn't mean it can't break.

Now I'm not saying this is what your problem is - it could very well be a lot of other things too, but the symptoms fit and it's a very common laptop fault.

But yeah, with the warranty out, you will have to weigh very carefully the cost of the repair versus the depreciation of the laptop versus the cost of buying/building something new.

Over the last month I have had to order in three new motherboards (on client PCs) from a certain manufacture, so depending on what laptop you bought there is a good chance that the motherboard went out.

Anyways!  I was randomly checki ngthe plugs then I find that my extension cord....Had its ground pin removed o.O  It mustve been my mom or something but yah x.x thats where I was plugging my laptop and idk how long it was since she removed it x.x 

Thats prolly why my laptop isnt turning on but do you ppl know exactly what happens when I plug my 3 pin laptop to a 3 pin extension cord wit hlike....no ground pin as its connected to the wall? -.-

The ground pin is a safety catch: if a wire were to come loose and short out to the case, theoretically the electricity would prefer to flow through the ground cable rather than through you. Under normal conditions, it does absolutely nothing.

Does it turn on at all?  Like, can you hear fans running? or the hdd and processor making noise of any sort?  I've seen a few GPUs detach from mobos before resulting in no video display even though the comp is running.  If this is the case then you can detach the GPU and then take a heat gun to it on the mobo and try to get it to seat again.  New solder wouldn't hurt either although I've seen that sort of problem fixed without new metal on it.

Don't go poking around in there. Either get someone who knows what they're doing to look at it, not the local comuter store, or just chuck it. I won't even toch one the owner has taken apart because by the time I fix what they screwed up, then what was wrong with it in the first place it would have been cheaper for them to buy a new one. Unless it's a really expensive laptop it's not worth repairing to begin with. Laptop motherboards usually cost more than new laptops.

Hope this won't be the end of your time on the boards or a long vacation from them, at least until you get a new PC/get it fixed anyways, always refreshing to run across posts like yours now and again whilst i read. Good Luck!

It might be useful to say exactly what you've got.

Oh you poor sod - if its Clevo very high probabilty of a cooked mobo, went thru 3 mobos and 2 cpus becuase of this and finally have a $3000  (£2000) Alienware doorstep :(

Also as someone else said check the price - i was paying about $300 a unit on the mobos also and only from 1 specialised supplier so good luck with that

I know this is no comfort to you now but in future always have a surge protector between the wall socket and your computer. This way you can also disconnect it easily and shut off the power if the surge protector has a on /off switch before you go to bed. This will give added protection.

The other thing is if you want to get some shop to assemble a computer for you check and see other customers they have assembled for and find out what problems if any did any of them have. Many of these places give subpar components that miraculously only survive until the warranty expires. Preferably you should only go to them if you know others have not had similar problems or check on their websites for testimonials and check those people out. Most importantly you should get someone who is knowledgeable to help you out and if not go to a more reliable brand maker.
