Most cash shop sell vanity items.few do sell experience potions but these are mainly ones that  have been around for years and are already heavy top like EQ2.

Granted some do sell items that are useable in combat or enhance speed but ones i seen are free to play (however let me note one exception which is order and choas online which is £5 to buy and comes with 3 free months so though cheap is still a pay to play ,they sell gold etc).

However, seems  no one has a problem with pre orders having items thrown in.Lets look at rift which came out brand new with collectors mount which gives a mount right out of the bat tha greatly enhances your speed at early stages .This means you can move, quest much faster as soon as you can get to a mail box and it happened not in a 6 yr old game but day 1 of rift opening.

others charge as much as $150 for collectors for vanity items.

I don't really care. I remember playing Rift back at release, seeing those bloody ugly turtles everywhere, racing past me whereever I went and I remember thinking "Boy am I glad I didn't buy the collectors editon! At least now I won't have to feel like I'm throwing money away when I buy a pretty horsie."

What mostly annoys me in regards to collectors editions and premium editions, or whatever else they might call them, is that they bundle extra quests and content with actual cheats that cheapen the experience. In Deus Ex: Human Revolution for instance, pre-orders from many retailers were rewarded with extra money at the start as well as extra weapons, and a special unique tool avaliable from the get-go. I'd rather just have gotten the extra quest they had in that package and left the rest behind.

Why do I care what they get?  I preorder if I want to play early.  Only a few games I would preorder, Skyrim is maybe one.

If I preorder, it means I accept that pricing.

If I do not preorder, why do I care what others get when they do?

Can we all just accept games as games and stop bickering about what others do, what they pay for, what they get, how they compare to us.

What do we want from a game?  Ground for jealous and grumbles?

I dont mind pre order bonus's

Most of the preorder stuff is for low levels (if its a level based game) and useless at higher levels

Unlike cash shops where you need to use it at higher levels to compete.

Now I dont like cash shop games (or pay to win games) but dont mind the hybred set ups as long as they are only for cosmetic stuffs.

But yeah I can see how this could pee people off but in the same token these people (the person buy the product) have gone out of there way and payed money for something in good faith so yeah they should get a token of appreciation for there pre orders

To be honest almost all of the ingame items from preorder have meant almost nothing to me in the past.  The only reason I have spent money on a preorder is due mostly to either beta access or an early start.  I have preorder TOR mostly for the beta access and the geek inside me loves the action figure.  Still waiting for GW2 to announce a headstart or beta access before I preorder but will still purchase the game regardless.

I don't have a problem with either one really. I could care less if someone got a Turtle at launch and I didn't. And I've played a lot of games with cash shops, if I have to grind a bit longer to get the stuff others are buying, so be it. Now, if I'm not given that option, if the only way you can get the best gear and such is to buy it; I simply don't play that game. Plenty of them out there these days.

I just wish they would do more with the Collector's Editions. Not just Music CD's. Art Books, and Virtual Items. I'd like to see an actual instruction manual that doesn't suck once in awhile (and not in PDF). A Good Cloth Map (Really miss those). Perhaps a tie in Novel or short story to better understand the lore and such. (Thought it was awesome they did that with the Special Edition of The Witcher. I had already read the book, but that was cool.)

Cash shops and pre-ordering games are both optional.  If fluff or a head-start is worth $ then take advantage.  Personally, I find the temptation usually resistable.

It is simple.

Because with pre-order bonus stuff , you have ONE or TWO EXTRA THINGS in game. With Item Shop you have MANY ITEMS CONSTANTLY ADDED and sooner or later they are not vanity only.

It is so simple diffrence that I wonder how you can not understand this collosal diffrence?

The difference is simpler then that even, since some pre orders might not even give you usefull stuff or any stuff at all. Take world of warcraft for example; it gave nothing to people that pre ordered it except for having the box early.

Also cash shops are there to constantly beat cash out of you since the game may depend on it; pre orders however are just there get the money quicker with some fluff or good starter items as something to lure people in. Also pre orders are not all about the items where as the cash shop is.

So imo no pre orders are not bad.

Only a few cash shops sell stuff other then vanity items? That's a joke right? Cash Shops are overpriced and sell way more then vanity items and it's more then a few...

Pre-orders is just buying the game earlier then release this way you know you will have a copy of the said game when you walk into the store to pick it up and not have to worry about it being sold out. The bonus of the game is just that a bonus and in no way are you paying extra for them.

I have no idea why you would compare pre-orders with cash shops.

To me this is like comparing apples to oranges.  Just not the same thing at all and doesn't even make sense, it is like saying if you're not first, you're last, it doesn't make sense! :p

There is nothing wrong with pre-ordering a game that I KNOW i am going to play.

Having Pre-Orders without lifting the game NDA or anounce a release that however, is not fine, it comes across as if the game is trying to hide something while already cashing in

It's sort of like those NPR fund raisers where they talk non stop for three days begging for money and you get free coffee mugs.

It's free radio, but the perks of donating sort of make it worthwhile.

The CE boxes are similar.  You get a book and a few gadgets for in game.  The point on the mount is interesting though.  Not hugely imbalancing but I bet it helped sell a lot of CE editions.

I think the OP is refering to subscription games with vanity cash shops.  I had to look at that too.  No imbalancing items?  Obviously we're not talking about the pay to win games.  TONS of imbalancing items, they even advertise "Crush your enemy by being strong".  LOL if that isn't pay to win, I don't know what is.

I don't like games that have a cash shop.

if you get an item with the preorder, that's fine as long as there is no cash shop in the game.

A cash shop game is a different game from a P2P game with no cash shop.

One is about shopping with rl money, one is about playing a game.

I don't want to think about shopping with rl money. I want to play a game.

The item isn't important. it's the presence or absense of a cash shop in the game.

Don't misunderstand this statement. That's what I enjoy in a game.

There is nothing wrong with someone that enjoys shopping for items in a game with rl money. If that's what you like, then enjoy. That is not what I like.

Pre-ordering is just plain stupid. Anyone who hasn't learned that by now doesn't deserve to keep their money.

This is exactly right. If you're dumb enough to pre-order something, then you really deserve having wasted the money if the game sucks, which is probably more likely than not these days.

I pre-order tonnes of games and see no issues with them.

Most are your yearly sequels like FIFA/COD/NBA but still have done so in the past and will continue to do so.

Its not as if $60 is a lot of money anyway. :)

Wonder why there seems to be more haters on the internet?

Read this by an actual marketing guy to find out why.

wow...listen to dumber and dumber here.....I can preorder for 5 or say 10 bucks....play the game for sometimes 2 to 6 months and get a sense of what its going to be at launch.  While you 2 trolls get to sit and just complain about a game you arent playing and make forum post on things you continue to have no clue about.  Hmmm....yeah....makes a ton of sense.
