It is not a secret that many people want to play it.

Rather have good pve/pvp at the same time.

Where you have to fight lots of pve enemies and bosses while completing objectives or capturing zones from the other two teams.

"It was a true challenge to work around loading times"

I'm not surprised at this comment as they're using the same old dated gaming engine used to create AO! Why doesn't this company sit down and create their next gen engine so they can achieve their ideas and not have to work around them because their using an old engine with a few modern plastered slapped on?

I like the idea of the world within the world for traveling great distances. One of the things which annoyed me in AoC where the abrupt endings of zones and hard teleports / doors / caravaneers, etc; i.e. loading screens between areas. Looks like they have been learning lessons.

Also his dislike of invisible walls is a great thing to hear about.

I might yet be tempted to play this afterall.

How you want to travel from New York to Egypt without loading screens? this is the challenge he is talking about. (but seems like they have done it with the hollow earth)

very good article. lots of interesting info.....

BUT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MMORPG.COM! enough with the "Secret World becoming a little less secret" shtick The first time was a groaner, now its just annoying. That joke was old the minute you thought of it. stop. no more. its just bad.

sorry, I had to get that off my chest hehe. carry on!

Themepark is not a sub genre, its an excuse.

Now lets just take a moment to look back at the last major MMO release by this publisher(Funcom).

Age of Conan. To be frank although AoC was ground breaking in many ways and had it good points. The amount of lies, spins and failure to deliver at launch was unmatched in the industry.

Even the features  printed on the retail box weren't included at launch and although advertised on the box i am not sure the game ever became direct X 10 compatable.

Looking back at the pre release interviews and videos post launch was a real eye opener, how corrupt  & deliberatly misleading these guys were. Stuff which i hadn't seen from game developers before and more closely associated it with scumbag politicians.

Now they may have learned from that farce, BUT SO SHOULD WE!, I would strongly advise against buying this until its been out 2-3 months and we know what it really is rather than what Funcom says it is.

I hope "Thriving with a lot of new content. We've already created a road-map on content post-launch, and we've already started to work on some of it as well." means that the game will launch content packed and mostly polished.

Does anyone know if this game will have "true darkness" areas? It would suit the horror theme well, with people needing to use flashlights and light spells etc.

Opportunist

Here are some things that sound good or intriguing to me:

  • modern setting
  • skill based class system
  • blending myths, paranormal, conspiracy stories with the mordern world
  • secret societies
  • the underground travel system
  • the visuals I've seen so far
Here are some things that I don't like or have reservations concerning:
  • Vehicles - The lack of vehicles at launch bothers me.  It's the modern age.  Vehicles are a part of life and should be a part of the game.  Dismissing this because the game "is not GTA" is frankly ridiculous and sounded a bit arrogant to me.  Hopefully that arrogance is just how the response came across in the interview and editing. The exclusion of vehicles, to me, signals that they aren't prepared to ship a fully fleshed out game world.  It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it's not a good sign.
  • Solo - "We always want this game to be massive and co-operative. Yes, of course you can solo things. Most of the content can be experienced alone, but it's a lot more fun with other people and that's the way we've worked it out overall."  This answer bothers me too.  I really hate that anyone else thinks they know better than I do how I'll have fun.  Despite the fact that they seem to be billing the game as an open sand-boxy type of platform, they're developing content meant to be "cooperative" which is very themepark.  If you create an open class system but have contrived defined content it will work against the open freedom of the class system.  RIFT has a great class system with very "on rails" content that narrowly defines builds.  In my opinion the best sandbox or sand-park worlds don't have "solo" and "group" content.  They just have content and that content can be approached with different numbers of people (from 1+) without contrived roles being needed to accomplish that content.  Maybe the game won't be this narrowly defined, but I don't have a lot of confidence in Funcom to break outside paradigm.
  • Promo/Beta Programs - I really don't like how they're running their beta signup and promos.  The Facebook tie-in along with the juvenille pep-rally feel to their hype promos is really unappealing to me.  I want to get interested in the game and game play not the meta-game of rallying my faction and getting my friends to jump on the bandwagon.
Those are my anticipations and reservations.  Overall I'm not sure this is the game for me, although I am really interested in the premise behind the game along with the setting.  Given my reservations I'll not request to participate in the beta and will wait to see how the game launches before I invest myself in it.

yes, real darkness, the game is going to have a dynamic lighting systen where in some parts you are not able to see without a lantern... this in both PvP and PvE
