ArenaNet has pulled back the curtain on PVP in Guild Wars 2 and our own Garrett Fuller has some thoughts on the way the game's going to let players bash each other's heads in.

The player run tournaments thing is meh. The original GW had support for it, it just that AT's (Automated Tournaments) were much more compelling so only 2 big player-organized tournaments ever happened (and they were hosted by Guru, which if you follow my posts in the GW/GW2 sections, you know I have major beef with because of the poor first tournament). Hopefully there will be some compelling features to the player run tournaments to make it not so meh; special rules (Golden Gun mode anyone?), limiting map rotation, etc.

Look. I am not a PvPer by any stretch of the imagination. I am a PVE solo w/guild group love. However, if my POV is worth anything, I would really enjoy watching the PvP play of active PVP players in action. Get some grandstands for the arena and tournaments or birds eye camera view (controlable) of war zones then I would definately enjoy being one of the spectators to the contests. I love NFL and College football games, even tho I am not physically qualified to play them and fans can increase the pleasure of the players a lot. Since I am sure ArenaNet will do this (lol) please give me some emotes for boooos. yeahs and standing ovations. Also fan voting for players and teams to recieve accolades (points - buffs - etc..).
So go PVP and yea to your fans. We will be rooting for you! |

So long as it stays a non-subscription game this choice of pvp is acceptable. ----- |

Besides, murphys rules state that in that case TOR would be delayed a few months as well (not that unlikely). Anyways, back to topic: It sounds fun, but Guild Vs Guild and the mists are the parts I am mainly interested in.... The fin nishing moves sounds awesome. :) |

Originally posted by romanator0 Just to expand on this answer and spell out why the PVP is potentially even better than DAOC's. It's not that your server is divided into three factions, it's that your server is playing two other servers. So if you had 1000 people on a server who wanted to PVP, it's not 333 vs 333 vs 333, it's 1000 vs 1000 vs 1000. No limit to the number of participants. Also, win loss records are kept. This in and of itself is going to be great because there's going to be some real server pride and a call to arms to try to win. More importantly than that though is that the battles last two weeks, and at the end of that time servers are matched up against new servers based on win/loss record and active population. So you're not always the big faction or the little faction, and if you win, your next match will be harder. You also get to see new people and experience new tactics. There's also dynamic events and territory to hold in the PVP world, goals that single players, small groups, or large groups can try to accomplish. The matches take place across 4 huge zones, one for each server that can be invaded, as well as a central one to fight over. It's has the potential to be a truly incredible system. |

Some additional info: At the end of the demo tour we were shown a bit of what PvP would be like, but due to us only having access to 7 PCs we couldn’t try it out for ourselves. In this short introduction we were shown the hot-joinable selection screen which is just a pop-up screen like your inventory, hero menu and other screens. Here you can choose for yourself what server you’d like to join. The game then creates a player pool, which gets rotated after every battle to keep it fair for both sides. If you don’t like a certain server, you can just return to the PvP screen and choose a different server, just like in your average FPS. Speaking of FPSs, you can clearly see the influence of this game-category throughout the rest of the PvP areas as well. To create a new path or create cover, you can make use of the destructible environment to easily create a new setting from a destroyed building. Like with dynamic events, siege weapons in PvP will grant you new skills and access to the rotation mechanics of your siege weapon as well. Want to try and take out an enemy nearby silently? You can even break the glass to create a new entrance into a building to ambush people who are inside. All in all, movability is the key to PvP in Guild Wars 2. |

When i put GW1 down a few years ago and began my journey back to traditional mmos, i left with many fond memories and the single thought, that if Arenanet ever made a sequal, i wanted to be able to experience the game's lore, immense size, and beauty with other people persistently. When i realized they'd done everything i'd ever wanted, i became very excited. I haven't been disappointed and continue to wait anxiously to make my way back to Tyria. I am very happy to hear that the pvp will not only be on par with the original, it will exceed it. Looking forward to seeing you all there! |

Hahahaha "It is how players will use the system. If games are favoring one side, players may quit quickly and move on to another game. I am sure ArenaNet will have balance measures in place, but overall these systems are ruled by the players. Time will tell, but I definitely think the freedom is a great step forward." So you can just take your ball and go home? Boy they really like to fluff this game up, it's Arathi Basin and Arenas... |

Originally posted by Nazgol It must be nice to be able to say whatever comes to mind. There's a domination battleground with a repairable seige weapon, destructable environments opening new paths and an opportunity to use line of sight and choke points to control area, but you can take one look at it and say "it's Arathi Basin." Not to mention completely ignoring world pvp at the same time. Should I save you the trouble and just say "it's DAOC" for you, despite that fact that it's also a vast improvement over that model? Maybe I should try it. SWTOR: It's WoW. See what I did there? |

i am waiting for news about World-PvP which is hopefully a bit more like open territorial PvP.
arenas or battlefields are sportsgames. i prefer golf or car racing for this kind of balnced pvp with equal chances.
much more interesting is, if the usually hard balanced skillsets for this kind of sports is different to the pve-skillsets. pvp-skillsets, especially if focussing on balanced 1v1 fights crossclasses, are ruining the versatility of pve-combat. i am not against arenas. some people like it. but keep it, what it is. a fully independent minigame in a versatile virtual world. played: Everquest I (6 years), EVE (3 years) |
