Simple mind, simple pleasure.

8/05/11 6:32:59 AM#202

The simple fact is that there never has been and for all intents and purposes never will be a real competition between PCs and any of the other common platforms, and any suggestion that there is a real competion is quite frankly contrived.

The different platforms all fill seperate media segments and while there is some overlap, none of them come close to fulfilling the function of the others, indeed there is variance between how the seperate systems in the same platform type are used.

Just look at a relativly simple game like Plants vs Zombies and how its implementation differs between platforms.

I have all of the platform types, 3 different consoles (the big 3), smartphones, tablet, PCs, lap tops, and each has its own place in my houses "ecology".  Even the consoles fulfill seperate roles, and their placement throughout my house reflects how they are used and by whom.  Same for the PCs and laptops, just the OS's installed on them defines them as fulfilling different roles (Dev, game, productivity (work), surfing, etc).

So, I guess the main point is that there is no more risk that PCs will disappear than there is of sedans disappearing in favor of pick-up trucks.

Regards,

-Gooney

Yeah, i can't use controllers either. I bumble through with them. I'm constantly going a little to much to the left or right and then always trying to remember which little button is for what.

And it is like chopsticks. Everytime I come close to being able to use chopsticks I think to myself "but it's taking me forever to eat and there is a perfectly good fork over there that could feed me".

MMO gamer since 1997

Honestly when people debate PC vs Console gaming I dont really think about the controller as a Console only device.

PCs have the option of using some truly awesome controllers. Razers Dual analog controller and its motion controller come to mind.

That the great thing about PC gaming we have options i can use my Mouse/KB for Rts, Fps and MMOs and then plug in my Controller for GRID, Street Fighter or Darksiders.

unlimited control options and my version of the game simply looks better than any console version.

You know what the best part of this article is?  Reading people's replies from the TL;DR crowd.

I just about snorted milk of my nose.  So indignant for not bothering to even READ the article.

PCs won't die for the same reason they didn't die in the 80's and 90's.  They evolved.  My computer is now in the center of my entertainment center.  it has it's own HDMI input, wireless keyboard and mouse, and can is a giant media storage goon.  That being said...

I have Mega Drive six-button controller for all platforming and run & gun goodness. Then I have Microsoft FFB2 for flight simulators. Then I have Xbox 360 controller for driving games and other stuff that needs analog input. THEN I have self-made arcade stick for SHMUP's and fighters. FINALLY I have mouse & keyboard for FPS, RTS etc... I could actually also mention Nintendo DS, that has touch screen for puzzles, board games and the like.

They all have their roles, just like smartphones, laptops, home PC's, HTPC's, gaming consoles etc etc...

Think of computing machines as automobiles. Why wouldn't everyone want a Toyota Camry? Does everything you might need, good mileage, reliable, affordable. But no, there are still needs for larger cars, trucks, work trucks, vans, semi trucks and fire trucks. Even if someone doesn't NEED a bigger faster car, they may WANT it. Like hot rods.

Higher horsepower computers will always be needed or desired and games will be created to accomodate that market.

I'm sorry, but whoever said that is a dumbass.

It doesn't matter how powerful handheld devices, consoles, etc becomes. The computer will always be the top of the line by the mere fact it is the platform in which new technologies are delivered.

I can relate to the controller issue, I just plain suck at fps games without a mouse and keyboard. Great read!

I think most pc players like my former self give up to fast when it comes to console fps games. You might need a dozen hours or even more until you consistently go positive (unless camping....).

Except for mmo's, simulators, rts and a few grumpy 'old people' who can't adapt I think pc gaming will become even more irrelevant. Be glad that you still get half arsed ports as of now...

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

1. Give me a keyboard and a mouse over that worthless controller.  I am willing to bet an avg Call of Duty player with a keyboard and mouse would kick the shit out of a professional gamer with a PS3 or Xbox360 controller in a 1v1 match.

With modern voice recognition you do not need a keyboard. The tech MS demonstrated at E3, whilenot flashy or an immediate show stopper, was profound in it's implicationsfor the home market to those that can see it.

Mouse vs controller arguments are not valid for the future we talking about in this thread, because 90% of the average home user population will be using a combination of (advanced) Kinect type input, voice recognition (already being pushed by MS), and maybe still even physical controllers (if only for a transitional persiod).

The remaining 10% will be playing their games in their PC ghetto against other mouse users.

2. I will be gaming on my PC until games like the Total War collection can work and work well on consoles.  Has anyone played Civilization 4 on the consoles and then played it on the PC.   It is not even the same game, no depth like the PC version.

And yet I play Civ 5 on my PC using a controller.

3. Until I can run my console and watch TV which I currently do while playing on my PC, then my PC stays.  Watching a movie or show while playing on the PC is great.  When I play my PS3 or Xbox360, I cannot watch a movie at the same time unless I have 2 TVs in the same room which only happens during the NHL playoffs in my house.

Having 2 monitors or having 2 TVs... there is no difference.

Having a console running on one and your other streaming content from the cloud for you to watch is exactly the same.

You are not thinking in termsof where things are heading, only where things are now and your personal set up.

PCs are not going anywhere in the home and they will not be leaving the business world anytime soon.

The PC will not die, but it will become to tool of the niche enthusiast and professional.

In terms of mass market though, it is already redundent, the message just hasnt reached the dinosaur's brain yet. You are simply part of that dinosaur.

Computer games have only died in box form, most any compnay out there has some form of Digital download. Console games still come in box's because not eveyones console is connected to the net,but if you own a pc it is more then likely connected to the net and particularly if your a gamer.

My problem is not the lack of games, relativly speaking there is only about a handful of games I can not find a pc version of. My probelm is that all the games are dumbed down now. I got into pc gaming because the games were intricate and had more depth then the consoles. Gradually that has been ripped away as the rash of people that choose to not think invade the gaming market.

Example: I have not played GT5 yet, I have however played GT4 and basically you pick a car, limited color choices, and your upgrade come in the form of packages that merely upgrade the general performance of the car. Back when GT1 was hot you could go in and tune every aspect of that car, shocks, springs, lift, engine revs, brakes, everything to get it to handle just the way you wanted for a given race. Need for speed the first one way back when, you could do similar, not every part was tuneable but, most of them were and you could choose the car color, add decals and things to the car and truely personalize it. The most recent need for speed hot pursuit you can do nothing. pick a car and go, you MIGHT get to choose a color but not much of them available and they all look like crap and just try to remap the keys, more often then not even if the damn game takes the remap it does not unmap it for its last function so whatever the last function was you get what ever you assigned AND the original effect at the same time.

Even after the ruined the combat side of SWG you still hand a extreamly intricate crafting system, granted for the longest time the only thing worth crafting was space parts but, at least it was a awesome crafting system, now they are all like wow. go get the materials you need, push the craft button and you will have made an item that is exactly like everyone else's item in just a few seconds. Back in SWg I could craft a part just the way you wanted it, want a booster high on speed boost and low on mass ? you got it. want a booster that has a long duration and highest speed possible ? you bet I can do that. Same for every other part on that ship you tell me what you expect of your ship and that is what I will make you, don't like your first choices ? ok tell me what you don't like and we will fix it. Did not encounter that much most times if they knew what they were talking about I could make them exactly what they wanted the first time.

Now days this amount of material gives you an item with those stats the end. I miss being able to tinker with the details in my games. That is what console games have brought us, simple games for simple minds.

Ahh, it's late!  But I read the article and I really enjoyed it.  Quite a few times I found myself laughing.  Great job to the author.

But about the topic, the trend is to maximize profits so obviously console is the way to go, from an industry standpoint.  But I'm not convinced you would not be making some sacrifices that would otherwise not be necessary on pc.  So as a consumer, I'm not too hyped up on the idea.

Playing an mmo on my 3d 55 inch led tv would rock though! But in terms of socializing, it would suck.  I really dislike ts, ventrillo and all those voice programs because it ruins immersion.  I'd much rather just type with little chat bubbles.  The exception ofcourse would be a game like APB Reloaded where you really need to speak to coordinate strategy amongst team members.

I suppose they could add mouse and keyboard support to consoles.  That would be something...

They only ruin immersion if you let them, we had a section on our vent server for the rp crowd, you DID not go in that room out of charactor. Maybe if you solo play a lot you don't want to hear about what fred's kid did in the pool but, when you and your friends are tring to take a base/keep/ what ever contested area, tring to coordinate via typing means you just stand there a lot saing things.

I can hit the button to talk, keep people moving in the right direction and fight of that palidan/bh/ what ever in my face at the same time with voice chat. It is not for every one but, neither is typing.

Well every expert I have read say the next evolution for the console will the the last.  So don't get too hung up on consoles.  As to voice recognition It has a lot of downsides to it (noise being the major one) and it is still only marginally usable at this time.  I have yet to test a voice recognition system, including IBM's which is considered the best, that is really that useful.  Kinect like systems are probably more the future than voice will be when it comes to games.  Sorry to burst your bubble, but keyboards are going to be around for some time to come.

Anyways be careful who you call a dinosaur, you might be looking at one in the mirror.
