it can be difficult to get started at first, because EVE is such a complex game, but, if you like PVP, EVE is the best of the best. player-run economy, massive gameworld, politics, drama, treachery, backstabbing, asshats and good people. it's like washington DC :) my advice: do the tutorials, don't skip any part of it. there are a series of 5 10-part(each) missions that, by playing through them, will teach you the basics. ask a lot of questions in CORP CHAT, not rookie chat, you'll see when you get in there. EVE requires a lot of research to get right, but, I'll tell ya, no other game has made my hands shake like EVE. it requires a brain. be smart and trust NO ONE. have fun :) |

As the previous poster said, *do the tutorials*. Read the tutorial text. I can't stress enough how important this single task is to not crashing and burning in the first couple weeks. Read the rookie chat. Read your starting corp chat. There are a lot of helpful people in EVE, especially if you demonstrate that you're capable of helping yourself.
For a player corp, I recommend EVE University. They have a good reputation, and do a fine job in teaching people about the game.
How interested you stay with EVE depends on how willing you are to learn. It has an amazing amount of stuff to learn and do--more than any other successful MMO out there, imo. What you put into EVE will determine what you get out of it, and how long it keeps your interest. They can adjust a game all day, but they can't help the issue between the keyboard and the chair. |

I just started recently and it's not nearly as daunting as some people make it out to be. The chat channel, rookie help, is there, and if all else fails, there's well written guides and resources for everything. I haven't tried PVP yet because I'm not at the point that I can comfortably abide by rule #1, which is, don't fly what you can't afford to lose. Join E-Uni, they will show you the ropes.
I've been playing for nine days, and I'm almost ready to fly my first battlecruiser with almost all tech II modules. Decide what you want to focus on, and make a skill plan to fit that goal. |

You may not wish to start playing since you will be behind everyone else no matter what you do. Also it will take about a year before you start to do anything worth doing. |

I think the better answer is... Don't worry about if you're behind other players, worry about if you'll actually enjoy the game. I LOVE Sci-Fi, I LOVE space, I would kill small children if it meant I could find an enjoyable Sci-Fi space MMO... I cannot get into EvE, in fact I really dislike it. Give it a try and see if you can actually get into it and enjoy it before you worry about if you can be useful in the game. Don't take my opinion of the game as your own... I mean, I played DAOC and WoW... and most people on here and in EvE will flame and troll anyone who enjoyed WoW ever in their life! They are very different game types and I don't think anyone can actually enjoy both... seems to be one or the other. |

I want a well done space sandbox but that is not eve. Their developer go the cheapest route everytime and the work they do is medicore at best but that doesnt take away from the possibilites of what the game is capable of but still the development is poor. |

i thought if i like games like Shogun i would like EVE cos its all about strats. You guys not serious right takes one year to be useful in the game? |

Eve has alot of layers, but as a sandbox game, you need to decide what you want to do, and what you want to be........ then you make your playtime work for you to reach your goal. The game doesnt set goals for you, its up to you.
I used to be a 0.0 politician, before that i was a pirate...these days im a market pvp tycoon.
Dont let the game choose for you...choose your path and make your own game..thats Eve. |

Like it's been said OP, Eve is a great game, and really it's never too late to start. I was pvping a week after I started the game years ago. Seriously, join E-Uni. Once you get in game, join the Eve University public channel and ask away. There are always tons of people willing to help with answers in that channel, moreso than the rookie help channel.

It takes a new player as long as the time he relizes all ships/skills/things in eve are both wanted and needed to learn he/she is usefull. No sooner, no later. Truth. |
