There has been a good MMOFPS on the market for 3 years now, and this game really requires player skill (not just the usual paper/stat skill of  usual MMORPG). In faxt its too tough for most, as well as being kinda cruel to the newcomer, if he isnt already used to non-consensual PvP games (which are very few indeed).  Warning:  Its NOT a game for the WoW generation.

if you want MMOFPS with magic, try Darkfall. Its UO and CS and some others mixed for good measure.  ;)

Ok, I think the faultline is going to be between persistant FPS ala FPS-MMO or a persistant world with fast-paced combat ala MMO-FPS.

DUST 514 & PS are FPS games first with an MMO element, they will thrive financially but I believe will mostly lack the depth to do anything but "shoot shit".

The big winner (I believe) will be when an MMO is able to include fast-paced action with similar reaction/twitch requirements as FPSs and does it with the polish of WoW. This will require extensive story-driven content but less of an RPG feel.

Atm, a fantasy MMO is driven by DnD idealogy and requires the caster to wear a dress onto the battlefield. My money is on a low-fantasy quick-combat MMO being the new-WoW.

Current MMO dev teams = Keystone cops.A pure comedy of errors, sadly its not as intentional.

7/14/11 11:19:45 AM#43

IF there was a dev team smart enough to make one,and IF said dev team actually had talent in game design, instead of simply being a bunch of programmers given titles proclaiming them designers,a mmofps with a zombie survival based theme would blow away almost all of the  mmos we are plaqued with in todays market.

Housing ?Heck yes !Customizable safehouses ,in which the player can add and task rooms.Housing that gets attacked on occasion, and takes damage,AND has to defended and reppaired.

Crafting ?Again, heck yes!.Its pretty much mandatory in such a setting.

Professions,skills,and skill based advancement ?Yup.

Vehicles and various travel methods? Again pretty much required.

NPC hencemen ?Again, its zombie survival...and there has to be some stranglers out there who need a place to live and protection such a place affords.

NPC interactions ?Of course, and of course even among themselves.

Foraging ?Forget the standard sillyness of mmo foraging, leave it far behind.Think fort zombie,WotLD,Zombie Pandemic, etc,, foraging instead.Search entire buildings and their components,vehicles,etc...

No, other than the lack of intelligence and skill of the current dev teams, theres NO reason why we dont already have a mmofps that overwhelmingly blows away the current crop of crap mmos.

SOE need to ADVERTISE THE DAMM GAME...and then maybe it will compete with many of the MMORPGS out there.  I mean really advertise it...Television (cable, dish network etc).  "hello i'm Verne Troyer, and i'm a Vanu unimax user" style adverts (well maybe not that one  but empire specific tv ad/mini movies would rock) would bring a huge influx of players which at the end of the day is what a persistant MMO really needs.

The whole roleplaying premise combined with an FPS style combat system is just way superior to the traditional classic mmo combat system..

And should be the future of the genre when implemented correctly..

There is NO such thing as an MMOFPS  nowadays really.   beyond WWIIOL.  everythign is just lobbies. Also  it will NEVER be at it height like back in the day,  where games like Endless Ages, NEocron, WWIIOL,  PLanetside,   FOM, all existed within the same damn  time.

Im 100%  as cool as  planetside 2 sound   the average person doenst want to  F***  with anything made by SOE for the time being.  Considering they are hte  PC eqivalent   of infinity ward.    So the days of  REAL  MMOFPS is long over.   forget about it, its a wrap

I have not tryd the good mmofps like ps1 and wwo(atleast i have heard alot of good about em here).

Other mmofps/mmo3rdperson have been very lackluster. You can not make a lobby game and charge 15$ for it, as i get superior lobby games for the b2p price.

If they cant host more than 64vs64 they might as well give up, dont matter if they have 10000 people on 1 server if only 10vs10 play against each other. If so im better off with css or bc2. There i have 5000+servers all from 1v1-32vs32 the latter one is much more fun in every aspect

Persistant world for me as a fps player aint a hugh deal(after playing apb that had persisten lobby world), but bringing 200+ to a big battlefield would sure peak my interest, after that it is how they handle recoil/hitbox/lag to make me stay or not.

Until developers start to understand that basic, mmofps wont happen. But as said numbers are just the basic, i have playd a crap load of fps i dont like and maybe 5 i realy realy like.

I think they can take the mmo world by storm if done well, but there is a bigger risk as they enter the b2p arena. Becouse of this they need quality game that i guess wont be super popular on release, i would assume the 1st company to try to change fps over to mmofps will loose money the 1st year until word of mouth carry the fps players over even if it is a great game.

Mmorpg had a big advantage, most rpg games are single player. Some had lacking multiplayer. But to realy play rpgs online your only option was mmorpg. Diablo2 was among the few that had good multiplayer, i havent playd any other rpg that had good multiplayer but i guess there are some that slipd pass me  over the year.

A more interesting article would be how MMORPGs are all slowly but consistently becoming MMOFPS games. The NWO of MMOs is much closer to quake than it is to Meridian, UO or any mud I every played. Money grubbing trash, all of it.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

The reason the MMOFPS has come to rival the MMORPG is the lines separating the two blurring as overlap begins to take. For example TERA is a MMOFPS with some fantasy RPG elements thrown in. Same thing can be said about Darkfall. On the other side there are games like Vindictus which is MMORPG with some FPS options. This hybrid gaming is likely the real future of the industry here.

My vote goes to Team Fortress 2.. We need more "class" based team combat.. There is also a game on steam called Monday Night Combat which is ripe for competition..

This is PS2... infering the was one before it.

Team Fortress is a childs game... just like BF heroes online (wich plays out of your browser). PlanetSide was a great game, but it had some flaws and had no marketing. PS2 will be great, because more than 100k will play and it will be busy all the time... thus drawing in more combatants.

As for tourney..?  Tribes, Counter Strike, etc.. all were platforms for major touneys. PS2  is an ONLINE FPS game and the tourney is the game... are you better in a persistant world, than the other people.

As for outright FPS play and tounreyments..? Expect BF3 to steal the cake on tourney circuit.

lol... did u say team fortress..? (<-- little kids don't have the funds to travel the world going to tourneys)

Give me twitch based combat all day, even though I'll sometimes struggle with it, at least at first.  Do not give me team play centered around guilds.  That's all Earthrise is, and I suspect that's all MMOFPS devs can currently conceive of.  Team pvp with its roots in the standard gear grind plus MMO politics, all adrift in a shallow, boring game world where everything everyone does leads back to combat.  However, I could be suddenly in the minority as far as gamers go.  Maybe I haven't noticed and more and mroe gamers are becoming social players, reversing the trend over the past few years.  If this is the case, doubtless the communities, however unappealing to me, will provide some of the missing depth for a different type of player.  If not, then these games will become empty sandboxes and sad disappointments, as well as money sinks for the developers and for those foolish enough to purchase them without doing their research first.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

global agenda is somewhat a MMOTPS, there isn't quite open PvP (that's still instanced) but it mixes some rpg elements very well ( skill trees, offhands are basically usable skills, progression system etc). I think that if their next expansion had open pvp then it would be one of the best games out there.

I think this sums up a lot of what I think as well. Sony isn't doing to great with meeting fans' expectations or desires.

I spent a LOT of time in Global Agenda and it was a lot of fun (still play occasionally). There's no reason you have to stick with traditional MMORPG combat to have an MMORPG experience.

Heroes are about character - not gear.

"The FPS needs to continue to grow and establish itself, but with time, will rival the content, replayability and depth of an MMORPG."

Replayability...?

Aha!  Thus the problem becomes clear.  It is not a case of comparing a MMOFPS to a traditional MMORPG.  It is a case of comparing a MMOFPS to the new breed of diseased MMOGLs...

MMORPGs have PLAYABILITY.

MMOGLs have REPLAYABILITY.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Well I have to disagree with the article.  I don't think they can even come close to what a MMORPG offers.  These games are very superficial.  People like the pvp in these games as there are no consequences.  Personally I think the pvp in these games is very lame.

No consequences? I played WWII Online for a number of years, and it was great fun.  You want to talk about consequences? How about parking your Daimler armored car 5 clicks from town overlooking a bridge, and trying to prevent any vehicle from crossing it to protect your Ally's flank whilst they defend a town. If you die, your flank is lost and the town becomes that much more vulnerable to capture by the enemy.

Loose a town that your Allies and team mates have been fighting for days to hold, and you'll know about consequences.  Take a town that you've been fighting an attrition battle for, and you'll know consequences.  String enough of these consequences together and you get a front line that is dynamic and full of dramatic turns.

edit: sorry for the necro post, lol. Didn't realize at all. Just saw this article and thought it was pretty timely considering.
