Hello, everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

My question is as follows:

When doing a task, such as mining or running missions, what activities (or inquiries) can I do to stay immersed and engaged with the game? It's not so much a matter of patience; I know how to be patient, I'd just like to keep my mind active and "doing something" while my ship is orbitting an asteroid and auto-harvesting it. 

Examples of possible activities a player might partake in whilst mining/mission-running might include browsing the market, chatting, etc. I'm curious if any of you could add to my rather short list of sources of engagement, either by elaborating on how to become further engaged in a category I mentioned, or contributing a new form of engagement altogether. 

When I do decide to play a game instead of reading a book, or engaging in an otherwise productive activity, I'd like to maintain a sense of liveliness and "exertion" while in game as well.

Join a corp.

participate in OPs.  Whether they be mining, missioning, ratting, or PvP.  The best way to get the most of EVE is to be social with other people that play EVE.

Beware corps that treat EVE like a job, impose requirements on it's members, or simply try to dictate how you play. 

Socialize, socialize, sociialize.

I haven't done much of mining nor mission running but I know you can do run mission AFK or efficient way.

Would be an efficient way of missioning an option for you?

To make missioning efficient, focus on your DPS rather than tank. Faster you kill stuff, sooner you finish your mission, more ISK you get. That will keep you busy and fully focused on your mission.

As for mining, it is something I have even less experience with but I think it was just designed to be semi-AFK activity... What you could do different instead of high sec veldspar mining?

You could probe for belts with more valuable minerals and/or mine in low/null sec(that's the only mining I have ever done). Both options keep you occupied but I have some doubt about efficiency. The biggest issue with mining in unsafe areas is transport of mined minerals to trade hub/secure space.

Also I have to ask you, why mining AND mission running? Splitting your skill points between 2 different activities isn't really efficient and that way you will end up sucking in both for double of time that would normally be needed.

Download EVE Mon, EVE Fitting Tool, ISK 3.0, join recruitment channel, do some reading, make some plans on EVE Mon. but the best u could do is as the guy above said...join a corp and socialize, try to get some really cool guys or an Academy Corp. PvP a lot and have fucking fun. :)

Eventually getting a second account in a covops with good probing skills is what really opened up the game for me personally: Exploring and plexing in lowsec and beyond, setting up suicide ganks in highsec and pinpointing players in W-space for my main, just scouting ahead in unsafe area's while on the move, checking out enemy posses, salvaging missions, infiltrating wardecced corps, etc.

All became much safer / easier / more fun / more succesful and in some cases actually managable. In a game where intel is king it's like having a mini-corps on your own. I would never play EVE on a single account again.

Of course the most fun is had by sharing it with others so yeah, join a corp and/or some cool ingame channels.

How do I know the Corp I'm joining is best suited to me?

Bug the fuck out of one of their recruiters, ask about what they do, the player attidudes, maturity level, etc

If you are as mature as you sound I would like to direct your attention to The Night Crew. I am a new memebr with them and a returning player that feels more like a newbie...and they are very helpful in getting me engaged and enjoying  new eden. CEO TNT 1 is very helpful with advice and just as importantly he cares that you are happy with what you are doing in the corporation. So, they are very newbie friendly and will help find out what will get you feeling liek you are making the most of your experience.

Most better crops wont take you unless you have 6m SP, not too bad really, and quick to get. Also get into the eve academy, lear the ropes there, fly with other nubs, and hey, you may even just bounce w/ them when they move, or maybe start your own corp, who knows. 

Aside from that, recruitment channel, and just talk to peeps.

A lot of people forget to ask this question. If there are not many players on while you play, there is no point in joining that particular corp. It is important that you have corp mates that play during your own peak times. Also, it sucks when the majority of corps ops occur while you are still at work/school/sleep.

OP sounds like he is interested in hardcore multitasking.... Make isk while he's making isk. I would highly recommend reading up in planetary interaction..."playing the market" (as in, finding items in high demand and setting up buy orders at a low price and once you get them, sell them for high price)....using agents to research for you to get datacores....

but really, eventually getting a 2nd account would truly benefit you.
