If the website was called vegonline.com then sure I would expect the tomato article.
This website is MMORPG.com, and the writers seem to think that LoL is related enough to the genre for them to write articles on it (quite regularly). So I would expect a decent level of impartiality and for them to start doing pieces on other games in the MOBA genre.
Otherwise they just come off as a simple fan site, by only reporting on one game in a growing new genre.

 Agreed. LoL has by and far the worst playerbase of ANY game I have EVER played. Whats sadder is that the game itself is very well made and fun but the players that you play with are some of the worst scum I've ever run into and Riots basically done jack to ever improve it. Their best answer to the pile of garbage playing LoL was the Tribunal, which in itself is a joke. A game maker has some of the worst trolls, griefers, feeders and leavers around yet they give THEM the power to police themselves basically? Like I said its a fun game but the playerbase is about as epic fail as it gets.

I found HoN playerbase to be worst, esp against new players.

Then again, as with all multiplayer games, the solution is to get some friends and play with someone you know who isn't a moron. :)

Yeah lol is massive, shames its EU servers go down on a DAILY basis, and having 24 hours uninterrupted up time is a distant memory for EU players.

But no one "journalist" ever seems to comment on the shoddy poor service EU players get.

The matchmaking system is messed up, there is a list of ten or so champions that whichever team has more of will most likely win the game, the playerbase is rude, and games are determined more by whatever team has the worse player as opposed to which team has the best.  It's addictive and fun, but there is a list of negaties that goes along with the game so long that it really isn't worth playing or getting in to at all.  Honestly, I thnk once the MMORPG scene picks up again, these MOBA games are going to lose a lot of Steam. (Pun intended.)

As a long term league of legends player i must say it is one of the best game i have played. However as some have mentioned, the community is the worse in history. Every game will have rude people with negitive attitudes who will flame and abuse other players for simply dieing.

Game are won by which team has the least trolls. Currently its so hard to play on the EU version due to all the downtime recently, i must say, im lucky to play 1 or 2 games "PER DAY" due to all the server downtime over the past 6 weeks.

Overall it is a good game If you play on the American servers you will have a general good experence, however if you play on the EU servers, i feel sorry for you because i am in the same boat as you.

I love LoL, been playing for nearly a year...I've spent probably 20$ on skins..but never a dime for anything other then that.

accounts for why i hadnt really come across the game before. but if its not an MMO.. that would kind of explain it.. but RTS' ... well i liked age of empires... and starcraft..  so if its something like either of those

It's not an RTS.  It's a Warcraft III style pvp arena game except you only control one character/champion.  Teams are 5 v 5 or 3 v 3, depending on the map you queue into.  While it's heavily based on a RTS game, Warcraft III, you don't control groups of units, as you would in an RTS.

If you want to play a game where the community is complete trash and brings out the worst in you, play League of Legends.  By the end of the day you'll want to bang your head against the wall and then watch the ending of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back over and over again till you calm down. 

It's a highly addictive time sink that could quite possibly increase your risk of heart attack (for all you fat gamers out there) but most certainly raise the blood pressure and stress level to a point where you may have to start thinking about using cheaper hardware so that it is easily replaced when you throw it across the room.

No, you can't do anything to stop the community from being garbage.  No, there is no reasoning with most of them.  Yes, there is an ignore feature but there is a maximum number of people you can ignore.  I reached that maximum in three days.

Don't waste your time with this one, it's addictively toxic.
