As the title states, I am sitting aside 10 grand to build myself the ultimate gaming/multitasking PC. You have free reign on everything except the power supply and the video cards. I am going with a 1250 watt Corsair PS and 2 ATI HD 6990 Crossfire video cards (Not sure which brand yet though). I do want a separate sound card, something high end that I can plug into the surround sound system I am building around my PC area. I am also looking into cooling for the cpu and video cards. Before I forget do not worry about the case, that has already been bought and one last thing I do not care if the system is AMD or Intel based though I have always leaned towards AMD when I build my own systems. I do want this one to kick some ass.
Thanks in advance

You're going to struggle to even spend that on a desktop. The only way to do it is going to be through periphirals and screens, you'll just be spending it for the sake of it and not to get a better machine. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. |

Want one honest answer :) ? build a pc for half that money and wait 3 years and build another one.
Price performance on top levels are retarded, you pay double the price for so little extra performance and those prices drop insaly fast. Whats top gear now is old next year.
Lets compare your 10 grand system in a timeframe of 3 years, your system would be a beast in the 1st year good in the second year and medium in the 3trd year.
Your money brother, but spend it wise :) |

I know it won't get near that. I do not need the screens either. Velocitymicro got me up to 7k and I figure that was mainly from getting the name and the luxury of them putting it together. I know we got some tech smart folks here and I already got a list of what I want picked out, but I am not totally satisfied with what I picked. I needed to pick you folks brains for a bit to get some new ideas.

Here's some parts I would get: The fan on the 6990 is rather loud, so perhaps you should consider watercooling if you want a relatively quiet sysytem. I will also say that If I were to spend this much on new system I would wait for Sandy Bridge E which will come out in 6 months time. |

LOL.. looks like that last post broke the thread. It's actually easier to hit 10k for a computer than you would think. All you need to do is buy one of these. But in all seriousness. I would buy 2 SSD drives for the OS and programs and then do a RAID setup with 2-4 Cheetahs for your storage drive. You could get 2 of these and 2-4 of these and you'll be all set. Either set asside 5k to get another ultimate machine in 3 years when everything you can possibly get at this time will be slightly outdated or spend a little on a really superior monitor array. Not sure of the quality of this brand but at least something like a tripple 24 inch setup. |

I dislike many of those choices. - I rather would pick a nice lightweight Aluminium Midi Tower, than a bulky Full Tower. Full Tower has no advantages over Midi Tower if you dont need the extra space. - Double graphics card ... meh, I wouldnt want one of those. The additional performance is at best random. Many games benefit hardly at all. And graphics cards have the bad habit of being loud. IMHO not worth it. - You definitely DONT want a 10k RPM harddisk in your home computer. EVER. Even less TWO of these beasts. Sound level IS part of the comfort of your home computer. Harddisks with 10k RPM belong in computer centeres where, most of the time, nobody is in the room. Also, 600 GB ? Dont you ever download anything from the internet ? I dont even look at harddisks below 2TB any more, unless they are SSDs, 2.5'' usb drives (1TB) or usb memory sticks. As we're trying to spend as much money as possible, I would suggest an extrernal eSATA raid 5 like this one: http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/node/1809 (also has USB3 for up to 5Gb/s, but cant handle better than 5x 3TB hds) with 5 server quality Western Digital Green Power (very silent, very little consumption). You should buy a second one for backup, too, thus you have always a copy of your data in case that a lightning kills your computer. With 5x 3TB hds, you'll have a little over 10 TB of space. - A trackball ? Uuuum. No thanks, I'll go with a good old mouse instead. |

If you looking to Spend more money... WaterCooler. Ram waterblock. South and northbridge waterblocks. Gpu waterblocks Top Range case. Sli / Crossfire configuration (requires duel or tri cards and pic-express slot motherboard) Solidstate drives (if thats your thing)
Also.. Please reconsider using the ati card.. Ive used ati cards for 10 years now in my main pc, The amount of games that have glitches and sluggish proformace are ridiculous. I run crossfire 5770's and when i was playing wow that was still sluggish. granted their not a top of the range card anymore but its still got plenty of "grunt" put up against the games requirements.
Much better to go with nvidia, although more expensie (both in dolars and power consumption) the drivers are supurb, (as opposed to ati drivers which are shite) and the hardware is great to boot.

Originally posted by Slydigger This thing will actualy have much worse performance than the $4500 machine I listed. i7-2600K >> i7-980X and for 1/3 the price DDR31600 with low latency performs better than DDR3 2200 with higher latency (the 4GB sticks only come in 9, you could get 2GB sticks at 7, but then you have half as much memory) The bottleneck in solid state drives is the controller not the actual memory; the larger the capacity the worse the random access performance. For a performance system, smaller SSDs are better. The big ones are for comercial servers, like the video servers Netflix uses, where SSDs are used for reliability not performance. |
