if you already have the full client or for that matter the trial client, just login. although each SoE launcher may require some kind of registering with the game, but i dont believe that to be the case as currently my SoE account login works for eq1, eq2, SWG, and VG.

coupla suggestions if your new to VG:

1. start on the Isle of Dawn and do all 3 spheres to their max, thats 10 adventuring levels, crafting levels, and diplo levels, and especially your harvesting. even if you dont think you will use them later the quest gear and more importantly the tutorials on the trial island are clearer and more succinct than anything in the starter zones on the mainland/main game. and once youre off IoD go to your racial starter area. you'll only be lvl 10, but the storyline/lore is worth going through a few grey quests before they slowly start to turn green. you'll also want to find the local racial town's faction representative to get a special necklace that gives you faction coins for certain kills.

2. always ask for help in regional chat. this game is not full of wow rejects, while an answer may take a while to receive, you may even have to wait a bit and ask again, someone will help you.

3. find a guild. in the social window there is a tab with a list of guilds recruiting. many of them are gone, i am currently recommending twilyghte song for new folks. even if a guild has mostly endgamers in it, if they accept you they know that you will need help with game questions and a few game quests, like the griffon mount quest at 40. in any case i find that with the low pop right now, that guild chatter makes you feel less lonely out there exploring this quite vast world.

4. don't rush. as almost every endgame vet has said, the best content is between lvls 1-50. and they are right. if you are a casual to regular gamer you have about 2-3 years worth of content ahead of you, if you take your time and take advantage of a few of the wikis and infosites that are still hanging on out there. (fyi i call myself a 'slowbie vet', i just love to wander and quest and explore too much to advance quickly.)

5. Veskal's Exchange is *the* center of activity ingame for quite some time now, its on the continent Thestra. so after your racial starting area you can head over there quite easily via 'rifting'. these rifts are tall crystal and stone pillars with a faceless guide standing in a robe next to it. travel is typically cheap via rifting and you can also rent griffon mounts for like 5 minutes at a time to get you somewhere quick near the rift.

hope this helps, and i hope you enjoy the game. with the station pass price falling to a reasonable level, i am thinking for the first time of getting one. for me that means eq2 for my gf and vanguard for me =)

As posted in the thread, I would be kinda iffy on VG all of a sudden getting attention the week SWG gets announced of its cancellation. As for SWG devs moving to VG, that wouldn't be the best move because the SWG devs probably don't know a thing about where VG is trying to go or even mess with the gobbled up code. I guess really we have to go off of action instead of words. If memory serves me correct, ALOT has been said about whats in the works for VG but never came to light. I'll believe it when I see it.

The SWG devs can get this game an NGE "upgrade" and get some more players.

If you have any questions please ask. I have moved on to WoW from eq and no longer have any desire to play a dead game. Thank you. (posted by another selling his account in EQ1)

I doubt vanguard gets canceled.  It costs SOE almost no money to operate, so there is little reason to close it.  Unless there really are so few players that it has reached negative cash flow, which is possible I suppose.

As the the sudden internal attention the game is receiving, maybe it is true.  Perhaps SOE has taken notice that most people think Vanguards core mechanics are superior to EQ2 and all of their best efforts to revive EQ2 have not worked.

While it is unlikely that Vanguard will ever rise from the ashes, it could do considerably better if it had at least some support.  I just don't know if SOE would do something like that after ignoring the game for over a year.

Vanguard has far fewer players today than it did when they cut VG development and SOE has far less money and developers now than it did in that same time.  I just don't see how it would make any sense for SOE to reinvest in the game now.  The very future of SOE rests on getting a new success out the door asap.   Spending resources to work on a dead game doesn't make much sense.

SOE seems to defy logic when it comes to creating and running games, so anything is possible I guess.  It would be nice to see a revival of the game, so here is to hoping.

And you belief that?  I mean come on. How long do you think they will be able to cope with three MMO's being in development?

They just recently laid off a third of their employees and closed several of their studios, canceled The Agency MMO, before it was released (wasted millions of dollars on that one on wasted development time).

After SWG closes down, EverQuest 2 is basically their only running MMO left bringing in any real income for them.

And EverQuest 2 doesn't have that high numbers of players anymore either. Not to mention that more and more EQ2 players are starting to burn out on the game.

AND..... then we are not even talking about both the financial as coorporate image hit they took with the whole security breach debacle back in April/May.

I seriously cannot see them continue having three MMO's in development, while they just had to lay off so many people, close down several studios and canceled one of their MMO's that was already very far into development.

How long do you think they will be able to fund three MMO's in development?

EQ1 has more paying subs than EQ2

You got any proof for that?

well i know you cannot believe everything you read on the interbuttz but here's one.  http://www.brighthub.com/video-games/mmo/articles/35992.aspx

There is an article on yahoo! that said SWG was cancelled, because their contract was up in 2012. The decision was made to pull the plug in 2011, so not to prolong the heartache.

I don't think it had anything to do with losing money.

Well I dont think soe is going to sale vanguard.  However they are not getting the swg devs.  It has already been stated the have been moved to the new project and that project is EQ Next or EQ3 as folks are calling it.

Nothing is going to change for vanguard, it will remain the same ignored game that keeps going, heck vanguard does not even have a dev staff,  any updates are done by the eq2 devs nowadays.

Oh and vanguard players when is the last game update you had,  and when is the last xpac you had.  Be honest.

Yeah, going dormant on a game for 1 year then all of a sudden coming back and going LETS DEVELOP THIS!...doesn't make much sense at all but its SOE so yeah...They would have to put older devs back on the game to get it moving instead of devs from other games/new/interns. So they would have to bring back Silius/Tiraslee/Squish to do anything in all honesty.

That's pretty much my take on it.

It's not going to shut down or get killed unless it costs more to keep the lights on than they get in subs. At the same time, I don't see it going F2P or gaining any major development or anything. It got abandoned ages ago.

The sudden internal attention it's getting may just be part of the larger look that SOE is taking at all of their games. Given the fact that SOE closed three studios, laid off a bunch of people, dealt with an outage that led to them giving away 45-days of game time, and now having lost the Star Wars license, I'd imagine any internal attention is a sort of come-to-Jesus meeting where they're taking a hard glance at all of their games and deciding which ones to keep and which ones to kill.

I'm sure SOE has no interest in selling the VG IP to another company as it would then become a direct competitor to their two main cash cows EQ and EQ2.

First of all, please read the rest of the thread.  It appears that there may indeed be dvelopment news out of Vanguard.  I'll believe it when I actually see an announcement, but it's at least a glimmer of hope.

Secondly, the idea that small-market MMOs "compete" with one another in any meaningful sense is highly suspect. While Vanguard, EQ and EQ2 are all broadly similar in the sense of all being DIKU-derived fantasy MMOs, each has different appeal to different groups.  I, for instance, am currently subbed to Vanguard, am willing to occasionally dabble in EQ2X for free, and would never consider subscribing to EverQuest.  So for me the three games do not compete against one another.  Yeah, that's just one data point, but I also don't think I'm especially unique. Vanguard has features that EQ and EQ2 do not, and I am sure that EQ and EQ2 fans would say that those games have features Vanguard doesn't.

Thirdly, Vanguard is in a weird position in that it's part of the Station Pass (or "All Access," if you like.)  As such it adds value to that program.  Wih Matrix Online gone and Star Wars Galaxies going and the all-but-deserted Planetside clinging to life, that plan is looking a little on the lean side.  SOE has a vested interest in keeping Vanguard around because of that if nothing else, and thus also an interest in providing it some level of development, if you ask me.  There are number of plausible scenarios that may have resulted in the current year-plus of no new stuff; I don't think a fear on SOE's part that Vanguard will magically overtake their other properties is one of them, and if it somehow did, from a business perspective, so what?  It's all money going to SOE anyway.

It's really a random guess at this point. the company is cutting it's losses big time. lets wait and see you never know really with smed. he could turn on a dime with the games direction.

Whow, seriously ?

I have contemplated to play EQ1, but its graphics looked so horribly outdated, that I went "uuuuh thank you, but no way".

Also, I kinda LIKE being solo once in a while. Not an option for EQ1, or so I've heard. With Vanguard, perfectly possible.

Vanguard will continue on the way it has for awhile, no development but just running servers.

The track record of VG's development has been minor at best. I mean all the wishin n hopin for Stiirhaad, City of Brass, and the Caldera are just a few of those wasted promises but are the only real means of development that could generate some interest in the game. VG needs no more grinds, it needs exciting content with a dose of marketing.

F2P is not going to happen. It means they are reinvesting in the game or giving it another chance.

Can you point to where the devs have stated they are going to update Vanguard again?

That is good news, but the last I heard was that SOE was "planning" on the roadmap for Vanguards future.  That could really mean anything at this point.

There is a post on the Vanguard forums pointing to it.  Plus I got it from the big man himself via email conversation.  Good things are ahead my friends.

BTW im not currently paying for any SOE games atm and havent been since playing EQ back in January.  So please don't take me as someone who has been blindly following Vanguard.  It was brought up as an after thought and was assured good things are coming for Vanguard.

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

I do not understand where you see any indication of 'good things ahead' though...

The 'Vanguard has gotten a lot of attention internally this past week...' statement was extremely neutral at best, and could mean a road map to closure as easily as some form of future development.

Is there more info around then this about whats happening that I have missed?

There will be no development for vanguard to advance its current state, in terms of what the player will get for thier subscription. However there are two options which have to be decided upon for the long term commercial viability of Vanguard (not that it not currently profitable)

This is of free to play and an expansion, i list them in the same sentance because there will not be an expansion without the game going to FTP. However if the expansion is annouced without acknowledgement of FTP, it will be because for commercial reasons, because the existing population will 90% pay for the expansion.

FTP is a valid option, however to implement this will use up a sizeable chunk of HR, when SOE is looking to down size and there are other projects in the pipeline which already have large burdon on HR which is also likley to increase in the following 6-12 months.

Those are the posible changes which are on the horizon for Vanguard, but until anything is confirmed rest assured Vanguard will be as is.

In reference to the closure of SWG, SWG was a more successful title than Vanguard, the smaller revenues of Vanguard compared to SWG does not influence the decision for a closure of Vanguard.

This is because Vanguard currently does not have any overhead, aside from server costs which is less than 4% of the subsciption fee, and admin costs are only about 150k.

Conversley SWG although more profitable had higher admin costs (although still very profitable) its entire existance is legally dependant on IP rights, of which the current contract established nearly 10 years ago is due to expire. This contract always has permitted its extension upon the original terms (subject to inflation), however it would not have been financially viable, considering current subscriber rates to enter into a new 10 period of this contract.

As a going concern SOE would not sell Vanguard

In regard to Vanguards potential, my only suggestion is that if SOE presents FTP for Vanguard i would suggest you embrace it, as this is only way this title would ever see any ammount development time spent on it, (although intially it may seem all they add is pointless hats and different color mounts :p) Atleast some of what you spend on subscription will be spent advancing the game. Vanguard currently, and for the future in its current financial model would never see development.
