Now i don't know about most of you but i logged in to my account this morning and noticed that no authenticator code was asked for, so naturally the first thought was that my account had been compromised so i checked my chars and everything was fine, PHEW! After speaking to a few guildies i was told that Blizzard had (sort of) announced that an authenticator log on would no longer be required 100% of the time if you were logging on from the same location constantly!!!!!!!!!

Straight away i am thinking WTF! Blizzard have been pushing this as the best security for your account and i personally believe that it is, so why the hell would they make a stupid move like this? Then the worst rub of all that really pissed me off, there is no option to opt in or out of this!!!

I have been an advocate of most changes within the game and even those i wasn't too keen on i have accepted and got on with enjoying my game time, but this could be the straw to break this Camels back as i no longer feel that Blizzard is working to help it's players secure their accounts as much as possible. It plays straight into the hands of those that say Blizzard support hacking and gold selling and judging by the official forums there are plenty of players unhappy with this change as they are already on to their second thread since the first reached maximum replies.

How do other authenticator players feel about this?

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

you still have the same security without the pain in the a$$ authenticator on your home computer, unless the hacker comes into your house.....whats the problem here??

So umm, if your logging into your game on the same computer from the same location you are not requied to input your authenticator every time ?

How is this a straw that broke your camels back ?

Seriously its the sky is falling mentality, Blizzard has been at the forefront of MMO development, why would they want to create more problems ? Answer is they don't, nor will this be an issue for those who are smart players and do not do the braindead things others do to compromise there accounts.

I just do not see the issue here, looks like just more drama for drama's sake.

MMOExposed - GW1 got away with box sales (corrected his spelling) because it was a Diablo clone, not a MMO

I actually like the change. First off as long as i log in from the same computer i dont have to put in a number every time i log in. Also if i was to log into game from a diffrent computer i would need my authenticator so its not like my security is any less in fact it helps lesson keyloggers hacking my account as im not typing in a number every single time i log in.

I still have to use authenticator to log into my account on battle.net so its a non issue. They just made it so they recognize when u log in from the same computer on a regular basis so u dont have to put your number in every time u log in i dont see the issue myself.

Maybe the op is a blizzard hater trolling the forums thats all i can think.

Location-based account locks, and login restrictions are a fine addition to this kind of thing.

This would only be a problem if you mainly played at an internet cafe or some public place.  In that case, someone could target you I guess.

It could also be a problem if you are afraid family and friends will hack your account and do something.  I personally wouldn't trust my grandpa.

It wouldn't hurt for blizzard to make this an option.   Some people play at public locations or shared computers.  Very small risk, but it wouldn't hurt to allow players to toggle this off if they want to use their authenticator every time they log in.

Your peace in mind != the right thing to do.

Maybe Blizzard should have written a course called "Internet architecture for dummies".

Obviously not, have only worked in IT development, support and testing for 24 years, know nothing of keylogging, IP masking, network hi-jacking or anything like that, complete and utter novice, what the hell was i thinking.

In terms of 'right thing to do', how is it peace of mind if i don't like the move and don't feel 'as safe' (not the same as unsafe) as i did before?

Interestingly, Blizzard still require you to enter your authenticator code if you manage your account or even log into the forums (although pretty much one and the same now) so they still see that as an essential measure?

The reason they have given for this change is to make it less annoying to the users, but as a user i believe that it should be my choice about whether i want that inconveniance (not that i ever found it to be one anyway) or not.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Yep, and it wont be long till a WoW fan plays Rift and then posts about how they have ripped off WoW's security :D

This seems fine, as long as they have an option for it. Which from what I'm reading, they do not.

The problem is that some people play ont heir laptops (like me). So if a thief gets your laptop, he has your account too. I don't permanently store anything on my local machine to prevent a thief from getting my bank accounts/game accounts/etc...

This isn't the same thing RIFT does, unless they've changed their login patcher in the last couple of days.  Coinlock is location based.  Their authenticators are always on.

Goes with the territory of having a minority opinion.  I don't think I'm going on a limb by saying most people don't have a problem with this change, though obviously I could be wrong.

Since you seem to be highly educated in IT, could you tell what exact situations can happen that are making you feel less safe?  If it is just an emotional reaction not based primarily on your professional IT opinion...then it's my emotional reaction that i don't think Blizzard should spend time and money to give you the comfort choice.
