I kinda agree with the op on some parts although I wouldn't post with the same demeanor as him. I'm a developer myself, and I've been to a few game development sites. It's pretty rediculous when people post screenshots of their MMO they pretty much just downloaded, and followed a tutorial to get it running, while using all graphics that came with the package. If you're going to post a screenshot, at least post something showing something that YOU made. Be it a new interface, game mechanic, or graphics. It's completely unimpressive to see a screenshot of something prepackaged.
I've seen many screenshots of the torque MMO kit for example, and they all look the same.
I havn't used realmcrafter or any MMO kit, but from just overlooking them it seems they are pretty limiting in what you can do, so that's the only reason I've never used them. If someone is fine with the limitations then by all means, use them.
EDIT - Son of a bitch, I just replied to a 4 year old thread. Damn, necro bastards. |

Okay, I am sick and tired of people criticizing people who use MMO Makers! >:(
I am starting college and I will be taking C++ classes soon, but untill then, I am using some MMO Makers (like Eclipse and Genesis 2D) to see how running an MMORPG works. But heres the thing: I HAVENT PUBLISHED ANYTHING! Yes, it is very annoying to see all those people who steal other people's sprites and act like the MMO is their own, but that's not the case for everybody who uses those programs!
I am using Eclipse to make a 2D MMORPG as a side project, but guess what? I AM TRYING TO MAKE MY OWN SPRITES/MUSIC/SCRIPTS/ETC. I have the software to make sprites and I have a year of graphic design on my belt, I have a keyboard, electric guitars and a band to help with music, I am reading artlcles on how to script for Eclipse and soon my other artistic friends will help me on things such as story/concept art/music and all that stuff.
And once I can afford REALM CRAFTER, I have modelling software (plus education from a 3D animation class I used to have), photo editing programs (for materials) and other things for making a 3D MMO.
So guess what sir, YOU ARE A FAILURE! Try getting a cheap MMO maker like us and try as hard as we (the people who take them seriously) do and try to make the best game ever! >:( I DARE YOU! |

The person above me is "partially" right. I will admit, there are some people who are willing to make something decent. The majority, however, is what the OP is talking about. Think about it: if developing a decent MMO was easy, it would be meaningless. In fact, pretty much anything easy is meaningless. P.S. I have a simple MMORPG infrastructure about 10% coded. On the net, no one knows that I'm a dog. |

I know there are people who want to believe in the products (like the guy a couple posts above mine) but they are useless. There truly is a reason why you don't see people out playing games made by realm crafter and why you don't read about anyone making a living off of them. They are crap.
The bigger names like Hero Engine are likely pretty decent but the small stuff should be avoided. There was the guy who made Minions of Mirth using the Torque engine back when there was no MMO kit for it, but that was because he reprogrammed a significant amount of the engine and likely could of built an entire engine from scratch in the first place. Other then that there is no one.
It's not much different then the tens of thousands (maybe even hundreds of thousands) of people who buy Unity3D, Torque, C4, etc engines to make non MMO games. Of those tons of people, 10-20 of them ever release a game. All those engines are selling is false hope. They make people think they can go create a game with no true programming/art/design skills, but people can't.
People who truly want to make MMOs need to start off small. Make a flash game first so you see what it is like to bring a game from an idea to a finished product. Then make a 2D game by programming the whole engine and doing all the art. From there do a simple 3D game building off of the engine you have made. Then work up to a more involved 3D game. At some point work some multiplayer into your projects so you can get a feel for that. Once you have made increasingly more complex games to the point of having made a full scale 3D rpg or in-depth FPS with different multiplayer modes. Then and only then should you begin to even CONSIDER getting involved in trying to create an MMO. At this point you will have an engine you have made, you fully understand, and you have improved over many projects that you can begin building on to make an MMO. This engine will be far easier for you to use and create with then if you were using a middle ware product with poor documentation and tons of lines of code you didn't write and now have to swim through to figure out how the engine is put together.
I get that people love games and therefore want to create games. There is a reason many people don't create games (let alone MMOs), it is a difficult process requiring the mastery of many skill sets. |

And you thought that people start off by creating something like Darkfall? I mean this is very natural progression. People start using simple things and move on to more advanced stuff. Years ago I've created my very own web page using... PowerPoint (and I was really proud of it), then I moded browser based game script, then used framework ('creator') to create browser based RPG and now I code myselft, I've created browser based strategy game designed exclusively for mobile devises. So as I said before, long journey is started by making a first step or something like that. And the Internet is full of useless crap. There are tons of it. And people are proud of that crap. Maybe you are proud of your lvl 80 WoW toon, which seems like useless crap to many. So what. Why should I care? Why should anyone care about what you do and what are you proud of. |

Pathetic topic. Should be closed. Not everyone has the time/energy to develop a game from scratch. |

Just to get something up and running, even with just the models that come with a 3d mmomaker like RealmCrafter would be better than the dross that's on the market these days. Er, lol. ![]() |

The MMO industry to advance beyond it's stale state needs MMO maker software. Not saying that the current ones are good but at some point in time there needs to be one.
You'd be amazed how much time and money MMO designers waste reinventing the wheel for each new release. |
