I've been avoiding Star Wars for the past year in anticipation for this game. Now in ready to dive back in. My question is what are some ways to prepare for the upcoming game release?
Any SW books I should be reading, games to play?

Buy at least four cases of Mt. Dew, gather a large supply of various candies and meat jerky of your choice, pre-emptively plan a serious illness that requires you to miss a week of work and tell your friends and family you will not being answering phone calls a week after it is released. That's how I am preparing! (kidding of course).
Seriously though, if you have not played many of Bioware's single player RPG's, I'd hit those up. Knights of the old Republic 1, Mass Effect 1 & 2 and Dragon Age: Origins seem like a nice primer to me. Books? Not sure, I am not a Stars Wars book guy, but I am sure there several books based on or near the games time period.

Ive got two weeks of vacation saved up im going to burn to play this game when it releases. Ive got 5 cases of barqs rootbeer already stored up and ready to go. Ive got tons of cupcakes and mini white dougnuts in the pantry. I have absolutely no intentions of leaving my house for anything. Im going to play this game so damn hard, my computer is going to melt. |

If you're interested in books I believe there's one...maybe two books that were written speicifcally for TOR.
I know there's at least one that focuses on Malgus, the same Sith Lord in each of the trailers. There may have been another one, not sure.
There's also the webcomic on the main site that has a bunch of good info in there. Ummmm....other than that, I guess i'd say go play kotor 1 and 2 at the very least. There will be a lot of info there that is going to be called upon by TOR like Czerka and understanding what the hell kind of company it was/is. What happened on Tanaris, Revan and the Exile and more stuff.
Depending on what class you want to play you could also go play Republic Commando. Gets me stoked to play Trooper or BH and is a solid enough game otherwise. |

Originally posted by DStrangelove If you are interested in books or other lore material regarding the game, here are some things you might want to check. there is the new game setting page which features the 3 CGI trailers Return, Hope, and Decieved and a brief description of whats happening http://www.swtor.com/info/story/setting there are 2 books out now and third due out in november Decieved - this book follows the events during and directly after the Decieved trailer the third book which isn't out is called Revan (a character from the original Knights of the Old Republic game if you haven't played that) and follows what happened with him following the game
I would also recommend checking out the timelines page. The videos give a good idea of whats been happening through out the galaxies history. the way the timelines are set up is they start with the one closest to the time of the game and work backwards. they haven't yet released them all. http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/timeline
you might also want to check out the webcomics Threat of Peace and Blood of the Empire http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomics there is a third comic being released called The Lost Suns(first issue was released this week) but doesn't appear to be put on the site at this time.
couldn't hurt to peruse the rest of the holonet either
in terms of games to play, like others have said i would check out other bioware games to get an idea of what to expect with how the game plays |

I got my computer on a small table with wheels and a long extension chord so I can go anywhere in my house and play. Nothing better then your favorite mmo while sitting in a nice warm bubble bath with a stick of beef jerky on the side of the tub and a bottle of pepsi next to it.

Originally posted by DStrangelove Have a friend strap you to a chair like they did Alex in the film A Clockwork Orange, then have them force you to watch the Star Wars prequels over and over again for nonstop for at least a week. Make sure they force you to watch every scene with Jar Jar at least 100 times in a row. Unexcpected random scenes from the Star Wars Christmas special would be a good idea as well. Then after the screaming has stopped and you are back on solid food again, REJOICE. Now no matter how badly SWTOR fails to live up to your expectations, you are prepared for it, as NOTHING in this world could be as earth shakingly horrible as what you've already gone through.
Only joking (mostly)
Actually I would recommend you continue to avoid anything to do with Star Wars or the Expanded Universe before release of SWTOR. That way you come to the game fresh and free of any preconceived notions.

Grab a drink, get comfortable and completely ignore this game like I have been since I heard about it. Star Wars is so meh for me. I could care less. Man proposes, God disposes. |

Originally posted by DStrangelove I'd say it's very much worth it, I just played through 1 and 2 for the umteenth time a few weeks back. If you have Windows 7 or vista you'll need a downloadable DLL file which is easy to find on the I-net, just search KOTOR vista fix. You'll also have to disable movies within the launcher options. Other than that they play pretty smooth on newer os's. For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson If you can't argue the point don't say anything at all. |

There are two books so far... Fatal Alliance and Deception. I burned through Fatal Alliance, and i'm finding Deception even more engaging. They're pretty good sci fi books on their own, they do a great job of giving you an idea of the overall picture of whats going on in the war between the Republic and the Empire, and at the same time they manage to capture the essence of grouping up in in an mmorpg, the authors really understand mmo grouping dynamics. |

Originally posted by madeux Looks like Fatal Alliance comes out on the 20th of this month on Kindle edition. Will check that out and see how it hits me. Thank you for the suggestions. |

Games: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - 1 Books: Star Wars: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance Star Wars: The Old Republic: Deceived Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan (Release date is Novemeber fifteenth) Comics: Star Wars: The Old Republic: Treat of Peace Star Wars: The Old Republic: Blood of the Empire Both can be read from the main Star Wars: The Old Republic site: http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomics Timeline: http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/timeline Other options would be: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - 2 (Not sure how much lore will be touched upon in TOR but KOTOR 2 is cannon even if it's not a Bioware game, be warned it's buggy.) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic comics (these provide some insight to some of the conflict before "The Old Republic")
