Pretty good, actually. There's no large outcries or indignation at Trion like happened with AoC and WAR, and a lot of those who played it enjoy it. In fact, I think the major issue of Rift could be that to some it may fall short in the amount of content that can be enjoyed. But so far it seems to fall in the acceptance range of a LotrO, and not so much in the bitterness/grievance range that many felt AoC, STO, FFXIV and WAR belonged to.
As for SWTOR, the game is starting to shape up more and more, with the demos and reports so far showing that it has enough to offer for those MMO gamers who haven't grown to dislike and despise themepark MMO's: large, open worlds, bucketloads of content for solo players as well as groups, polished and smooth gameplay, improvements in its weakest points namely graphics and animation, all in all good signs. Of course, to people who have become jaded and burnt out with MMO's, who yearn for MMO's of the dawn of the MMO genre or just plain sandbox MMO's and who hate/dislike themepark MMO's, for those people the outlook for 2011 and 2012 is a lot bleaker, with their taste being more limited and such.
Luckily I'm not one of those, I can enjoy a wide range of MMO's so to me and people like me 2011 and 2012 are still on their way to being great MMO years

The gameplay in these games is the same as it's always been, animations and graphics make it look better. But it's hard to get excited about a game just by seeing a video. I need information about features and gameplay.
MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift |

Still looks great to me. Liking every moment of it. Specially the push towards more story elements. IMO about time that part had a bigger role in themepark MMOs then they have. Time for them to get off the back of the bus and start having more say in what happens. |

The problem is we've seen plenty of GW2 vids too aswell and that was worse than the tor vids, so in answer to the OP probably not amazing, but they will at least be something new for a while. ----- |

Originally posted by vesavius Explain.. in detail what part of that combat was clunky to you, and then use examples of current games that had more polished combat that you are comparing it too. You talk about how nothing had you excited but made it a point to reference no other MMO that actually has your attention. It would be nice if you shared with us what you are comparing this game too, or are you just one of the many trolls, looking for the oppertunity to hate the game? I can throw around vague insults as well, because of course it requires me to make zero effort to back it up. Which you havent done. You know what i seen, a levle 8 actually doing some meaningful content, fighting large groups of enemies with a purpose, with a wide arrangement of skills to choose from. And solid boss encounter at the end, and all i was thinking was, if this is at level 8, what is he doing at level 20, 30, or 50? If you actually played MMOs in the past then you know what low level content looks like, and it is never usually that engageing. People know its 5 or 6 months old because they have seen pax videos. And know what the current UI looks like, and that isnt it. We actually follow the game. I see a lot of so called mmoRPG players shitting on the RPG aspect of SWTOR, that is how long we've been playing shitty MMOs, people dont even remember this genre was created based on the idea of fleshing out a story. Not power leveling to max level in 20hours and then grinding the same dungeon out 5000 times to get a full character sheet of purple. I for one was very pleased with that video, Ive always said if star wars comes out exactly like wow and the only new feature is the tried and true bioware story telling id play it for 4 years. Because, i know what i want in a game, and when i played wow for 5 years i didnt quit because i felt combat needed to change, or gear needed to be revolutionized, i quit because after you finish all that, then what? WHy the hell do you keep playing. A great story that can be expanded on willl keep the game going a hell of a lot longer for me then a gear grind.
Every other MMO only looks at evolving combat, but apperently taking questing to the next level is not nessesary in this genre. Bioware never claim to break the mold on combat, so combat looks better then everything else currently out there, because its more polished and it removes the mundane aspects of traditional combat, and polishes it. But they in no way said they were going to change the combat mold, but so many of you seem to focus on combat and then disregard EVERYTHING else the game is doing.
That was a nooob zone he was on, and look at how different it was, it wasnt a bunch of npc pens with mobs to farm on, it was detailed zones and questing areas, every place with a purpose and the world looked absolutetly beautiful, animations looked great. What else did you want to see but didnt see which has you completely shitting on the game? Quotations Those Who make peaceful resolutions impossible, make violent resolutions inevitable. John F. I don't think the determination can be made by watching a video. I think we'll have to wait for release, and see the reaction of real players that are trying the game for themselves. |

Rift seems to be doing ok, people are happy who are playing it, some are leaving, but churn is a fact of life for any MMO. As Maverick pointed out, people do not seem to be baying for Trion's blood, always a good sign. Rift is a solid MMO, possibly one of the most ideal "starter" MMOs I can think of, to some it is lacking, to others...well it does what it says on the tin, and if that's your thing, you'll like it.
As far as SW:TOR goes, I didn't see anything to discourage my interest in the game. Combat at low levels is always rudimentary, as you don't want to drown new players in ability icons, by level 9 the guy had a pretty wide repertoire of skills (the SI/JK/Smuggler footage shows progression quite well). He just didn't seem inclined to use them all. As far as experience goes watching can never equate to playing in terms of how a game feels.
Bottom line, that footage really made me want to get my hands on the game. Though I will qualify it by admitting this is the first game I have ever wanted to watch leaked footage of. On one hand that proves bias, and on the other, I wasn't disappointed by it - which is a good thing. All I have ever wanted from SW:TOR is that it be like another KoTOR, but with multiplayer, and a bigger world. Maybe I just have my expectations in a different place than others?

I played Rift. Sadly I cancelled after a few weeks, because I am totally bored of traditional gameplay. Same thing happened when I tried WoW, Lotro and Vanguard recently. That said, from what I read in another thread it is impressive, how much content was added by Trion in 2 months. Perhaps the last time a game gets so much free content (in a P2P-game, paradox in the first moment) in a short time. I hope this shows other companies that a medium MMO can be succesful, if you release it polished and put more work into it after release. The jedi vid I didn´t watch yet. Can someone provide a link, oh lazy beings? *edit: got it, thanks cyress* |

I doubt SWToR or GW2 will release this year. I think 2012 will be better. Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1. |

It's a good thing gamers and mmo's mean nothing in the scheme of things because if it did the drama and angst alone would mean the end of all that we hold dear was imminent. But if you take a more positive look at the world of fantasy it's not too bad. I've spent the last 4 years playing lotro and it's been well worth it. Meanwhile I've tried DCUO and loved it but the masses didn't flock to it so it dies on the vine (not going into the last kick in the teeth it got from Sony). I just started the 7 day trial of Rift and like it alot so far (especially the video's that show masses of folks fighting in rifts) although I (am) completely unsure of what I'm doing and have my doubts on whether I will ever see the extreme action of the video (or a rift) but it runs well on my laptop, installed cleanly and I can't really say anything really negative about it (and I'm not a quest driven person). There are so many games out there and so many coming that it's almost nirvana compared to what I started with back in the early days of UO but what do the masses think??? Nothing but angst, drama, lament, sadness, despair and above all : anger. I figured this out a long time ago that it's not the mmo world that's going wrong but the players. They infuse every new thing with impossible expectations and overwhelming drama and subject(reduce might be a better word) the mmo world to a whack-a-mole game. Any entity considering jumping into the mmo pool really should take a step back and reconsider before risking millions on what is basically a roll of the dice on whether the numbers needed will take to your enterprise. Greatness and creativity aren't needed for the hungry masses come from a world of porn, violence and self-gratification that wants to devour your offering like a hershey bar without bothering to even unwrap it. For anyone still reading: the last 10 years have been a fun ride for those that love mmo's so don't let all this negative fluff detour you from finding your game. Just don't expect the impossible and rush in at a pace that will surely burn you out and dampen your spirits and you will also find gaming nirvana as I have. Thanks for reading.
