Originally posted by Dusntmatter But I might be temped to go one step further and say that rpg means "playing a role". I realize that there are game conventions that have grown up with the genre and I actually love many of those convnetions. But changing around combat doesn't invalidate the "playign a role"' part. The genre could have easily started out with trying to do realistic combat (read: "realistic") as long as the idea of playing a role stood out in the front. Where I will agree with you is that there do seem to be a lot of fps players who won't let go of the "it has to be fast like fps combat or else it's trash". they might like fps combat, they might think it's the pinnacle of combat and if that's their preference then that's their preference. But it doesn't invalidate a game system just like my hating that turn based combat in that game I had played didnt' invalidate that game. It just wasn't my thing. |

Originally posted by Teala Don't know if this has been said already, but they did add a lot more mobs to fights than in other MMO's and a lot of those can be killed faster than in other MMO's. If you think that lightsabres should be 1-hit kills then you haven't played many Star Wars games, little 1-hit kills there. KOTOR had a gameplay style that comes to the MMORPG style, and most gamers loved it and found it one of the best Star Wars games around. No 1-hit-1-kill lightsabre attacks in there.
Originally posted by Teala This combat is boring and as I said it trivializes the weapons to the point of silliness. So in that sense if you like this type of whack-the-mole game play than this game will be for you. I prefer my combat to be exciting and very dynamic - fluid. What you're actually saying is "SWTOR shouldn't be an MMORPG, it should be an MMOFPS". Well, they made it as an MMORPG, within the limitations of an MMORPG it offers a combat experience as close to Star Wars as an MMORPG can get, as far as the reports seem to say. Originally posted by Baikal As a point of note, I recently came across an elder scrolls 5 interview that was talking about archery. It said that the team for oblvion didnt' want to make archery a "one shot deal" so they purposefully made it so that one could't do that in all cases. Until somone made a "real archery" mod and pretty much showed them it could be done. I think when it comes to star wars, the combat woujldn't suffer if trash mobs hit hard but could also be taken out very quickly yet higher lvl mobs, mini bosses, etc, took longer. But again, that's just a preference. |

yeah, don't care, some random people making judgement on a guy that actually has balls to say what he doesnt like, and doesnt do cookie cutter articles like all the major sell outs i just wanted to say that a ONE website disagreed with all the corporate sponsored suck ups who praised a very weak game in the name of profit and good relations with BW/LA and gets flamed by fanboys like you PS Star Wars went down the drain with Phantom Menace, now its just another moneymaking machine, KOTOR was a one off, dont think you going to get MMO KOTOR experience in TOR, the beancounters wont let that happen... |

Shrug. Haven't seen that before. Haters need to hate. The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's |

Call it 10+ years of playing mainstream MMO's have definitely conditioned me to see thm in one way, and not deviate too much from that formula. I know it's my loss, and someday I'll adjust. |

Originally posted by triprunner You are entitled to your opinion as he is his. That doesn't make it even remotely close to the actual majority opinion. All I'm saying is the ONE guy who posts nothing but negative comments on the game is biased against BioWare and likely planned to write a bad article no matter what the game ended up looking like. He hated BioWare previous titles and planned to do it here. He plays and reviews mostly FPS games and decided to try an MMORPG and obviously didn't get it.
It might suck for haters, but the game is actually doing pretty well despite this one extremely negative biased review. If you want to hold this one guy in some kind of high esteem for that, you're welcome to do so, but it doesn't actually prove that the game is "weak". It just proves that this guy is a very poor, biased writer. |

for what its worth though.. i think the game will be successful, i just don't see it being huge.. certainly not in the millions anyway.. i think it will be a niche game.. with 250 -500k active subs.. which .. might not be what EA were hoping for... but these days.. its a more realistic figure.. |

Originally posted by Baikal A total aside, but oblivion is 10x better on consoles just because the controls and the fact that you'll be playing long stretches, often with gaps between action, and it's a lot more comfortable to do so with a controller and a couch than hunched over a keyboard. I couldn't play oblivion on the PC (even though I played a lot of morrowind), but played it thoroughly on the PS3. |

Originally posted by MMO.Maverick I do not know why people continue to think that an MMOFPS cannot be an MMORPG. RPG stands for roleplaying game if I am not mistaken. So an MMOFPS can be an MMORPG if they designed it properly. Mount and Blade is an RPG. Yet it plays like an FPS game. Funny that. ![]() |

Originally posted by Teala mount and blade.. i know.. its not a new game.. but.. its a good one.. and i still play it.. just wish stealing cattle wasnt so hard.. well.. stealing cattle isnt the problem.. its 'steering' them.. anyway.. MMOFPS are still listed here.. Planetside.. imo.. still the most 'famous' MMOFPS out there (if massively in decline) .. actually .. mount and blades combat mechanics.. simple.. but.. effective.. though.. have to say.. being able to decimate a small army with only a pitchfork and a horse.. is.. .. probably not very realistic |

Originally posted by Teala An MMOFPS is what I call an MMORPG with shooter based mechanics. Like Planetside. Like Planetside Next or Firefall will be. Sure, SWTOR could have been designed like that, shooter based mechanics. They didn't. They chose for a typical MMORPG - as we know of WoW, LotrO, EQ2 etc - style of mechanics. That offers advantages and limitations. That's what I was saying. The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's |

Your opinion might be that video's show that. My opinion based on the video's, having spent time playing it at shows is that it isnt a weak game. Wow, how about that, people have different opinions! The point is, and you seem to be missing it, that most opinion pieces, both written and from shows are extremely positive about how the game plays, and the experience that folks have with it. You can believe what you want, that's absolutely fine, nobody is going to challenge that. Just dont present your opinion as either a fact, or a widely held impression, because neither is accurate. |

Originally posted by Phry Seeing as how they said they need 500K to break even and 1M would be very profitable I think they'd be okay with the 500K subs.
However, seeing as how there have been over 1.5 million beta applicants and registered users on SWTORs site is much more than the 1M mark (and forum posters are just a small portion of the game purchasing community) it would only stand to reason that the game will at least hit their profitable mark, at least for a little while. In the end it doesn't bother me either way, I planned to play it with a small group of friends so there could be 300K or 6M players and nothing will really change for me there. As long as I have players to kill and my friends to play with, I'm good :D |

We get it... you want an MMOFPS... and you want an MMO version of M&B... but there seems to be 10+ million MMO players out there who pay their $15/month, every single month, who disagree with you.
So... what do you think BioWare is going for? Commercial success or failure?

Originally posted by JPTX Currently I don't anymore. I play FPS games mostly now. Like Mount and Blade and I am waiting for BF3! I do like MMORPG's for their social nature. Planetside and SWG pre-NGE were fun. WoW was fun to a point, hated raiding - loved the PvP - until Blizzard borked up the battlegrounds with stupid rules. My problem with SW:ToR is the same problem I had with SWG in that they need to see that a game based on that IP is screaming to be an FPS. To do anything less is a joke. Just my opinion. Ranged combat with target locking and tab targeting makes for boring combat when the combat should be exciting. I do not see that in SW:ToR. I see a snoozefest. That combat is not excting in the least nor is it dynamic. The MOBS are all static. They are stupid. I watched the gameplay vids. I saw nothing challenging about it at all. ![]() |

I enjoyed it on the console, I just miss the mod community. Usually I'll do RPG's on the PC for that reason, the mod community usually add's 6-12 months to a game for me over it's life that I play it, because I'll try some new things, and so on. I think I'd be more apt to play the modable games now on PC, and take other RPG's direct to console for the ease of playing. Just me though... |
