You know that famous engine upgrade taking forever. Someone made a joke about it a while ago. He said that Duke Nukem Forever would release before that engine. It was funny back then, but it its no longer. Duke Nukem Forever is getting released in June and the AO engine is still a work in progress........ |

It is still faster than EQ2s updated character models, they showed the first in 2005 on the fan faire and added it for the races of Kuunark but since then, nothing. I am not surprised, Funcom are putting most of their effort into TSW now and it is probably the wisest thing for them. I am pretty sure that they will eventually get the updating of AO done. As for Duke Nukem and Guns and Roses last album, I am still in chock.... Sometimes miracles actually happens. |

New Engine will be ready on some day but they have to get rid of that item shop, really. I was about to resubscribe but found out they are selling even xp stims nowadays. That really put me off. The game has already above average monthly costs if you subscribe. Last time I checked it was around 17 euros per month. |

They rather be working on some updates for Age of Conan and mostly on Secret World before they update the engine for a F2P mmo, but that should be kinda logical. So wait for the Secret world to be released. Last I heard I think they had like 1 or 2 people working on the engine update for AO, so it might take some time. |

Thats not really how its all going down. There is a seperate AO dedicated team. Its pretty small and they recently moved their headquarters to canada. Read all the "...with a means" posts for the updates from the lead developer on this project. They have recieved some artwork assistance from their bejing office, and a few items are being done basically by a diehard fan for free. Mind you how many items there are in AO that all need to be reskinned ect. Also keep in mind this isnt going to make anarchy online competative with any game graphically, and the character modles are all the same but tweaked slightly with new skins, from what i can understand.
I think some years ago they decided to dump this project on a few employees and basically said "whatever" with it, meaning that the games always going to have a nostalgic appeal, this new engin is basically going to bring back mabey a few die hards that left when their modern system couldnt get decent gameplay out of the game.
Now im sure if enough people return and the game keeps a steady population, more updating will come, but for now i dont think this is anything more than a small team projcet aimed at reskinning a rather large game. I really think theyve had a small team working hard on this for last 5 years, its just that much work, if you can remember all the space, items, and things that will need to be reskinned and retested.
THis new engin isnt going to change much with the game, if youve seen the reskinned modles and items, sure the world will look better and less 1990's but all the old issues will probably still be there, along with a whole slew of bugs and problems that this type of project is sure to bring.
If your interested, check out all the "....with a means" updates from the past, see what exectly they are up to and what they have done already...it seems they are basically done with the bulk of the work...but the bugs that are sure to follow....not so sure. |

Yes, VERY limited.
Not being able to access the expack Shadow lands and beyond is extremely limiting.
Being able to reach 200? So? max level is 220, along with 20 extra alien advancement levels plus more. In addition, you’re limited in the gear, implants, skills, perks, weapons etc that are available only with the xpacks. These are extremely important and play a vital role in AO, since the game revolves around min/maxing skills with twinking up implants and higher level gear. Try doing any of that stuff successfully with a fr00b account.
Not only that, but you’re also severely limited in the way you can interact with others outside hanging out in Borealis, as you can’t do any of the raids, or alien ships etc.
Looking at the game as a whole, a fr00b account is severely limited. Period.

Originally posted by Xyzed lol i agree with vorret the AO's Vanilla is huge.... getting to lvl 200 is far from easy, and so what you dont get SL perks or alien levels most people with those expansions would probably go back to Vanilla in a heartbeat on a clean server. And then thier is a froob community that twinks in just froob gear..AO vanilla is NOT a trial at all its how the game launched. Some people just arent happy! i would challenge you to find a F2p game that has anywhere near as much content! |

Looking at the game as a whole, and with everything it has to offer with a full account, it’s VERY limited. This isn’t an opinion, it’s a fact.
It’s like WoW going F2P for vanilla only. Now, while this would be widely popular and people would love this, it’s still VERY limited when you look at what the full game offers. Allowing one to level from 1-60, not 85, accessing only old areas, instances, raids etc that were only included with Vanilla. Sure the game would still be pretty big, 1-60 on Azeroth has a lot of content, but opinions aside, it’s very limited when compared to the full game.

Wow ppl really have no idea what is fact and what is opinion. Also, there are several posts here claiming to know exactly how funcom has set up their team(s) yet not a single official link anywhere. Disappointing to say the least. |

In my mmo jaded and honest opinion it is hard to get more for free than funcom f2p models offer. As far as AO or AOC which is better i would say AO hands down and yes they are apple and oranges even though the old school long and often torturous journey to nowhere is pretty much the same for both... Both of these Funcom games were designed to suck your wallet dry while you slowly progress toward tastier end game content that was often disappointing...hehehehehe So being able to play the original releases for free is a really good deal and if you still like it that much at the free endgame then you should prolly take one of their email expansion offer deals and subscribe..Fair enuff in my book.. And yeah AO/AO2 redone with FPS combat mechanics would have been awesome if not revolutionary and would have likely been highly successful... |

The free to play part of Anarchy Online is the COMPLETE ORIGINAL GAME. Again, the complete original Anarchy Online is free to play forever for anyone with unlimited accounts that can be dual or tripple or quad logged. Rubi-Ka is HUGE. Its the biggest pile of land i've seen in a MMO. Additional to that, the free game experience is steady improved, the so called "Fr00bs" benefit very mutch from the developments the last years and can use a good bunch of payed content for free.
The full payed Anarchy Online is a complete different game with other factions and targets were you need other gear and options like Perks or Shadowlevels. And even for a full geared 220/30/70 it is a chellenge with some of the free content, what mainly every payed player needs to do for his profession at some point. That said, Fr00bs and Payed players play very often together and with these new daily missions, what come for all level ranges, you will meet people everywhere.
I cannot express, how deep and free Anarchy Online is. Free in terms of freedom, the real virtual choice, to do whatever you decide to do. It is not a guided world were you have to kill these and that, but you can. You dont have to follow a gazillion of quests to progress, but you can. It would need a book, to explain, how incredible deep this world goes down.
The freedom of choice in Anarchy Online is overhelming. Many people cannot handle that as it is a steady process of learning on a chellanging curve.
Can you handle freedom in a MMO ? |
