Hi,
I've tried playing EVE a few times but I could never get into it. I love EVE from a conceptual point of view, and in fact I like almost everything about the game except one aspect - character control.
Is there anyway to fly your ship like you can in other space games and aim your weapons?
Also, (sorry to put this in the EVE forum but you guys would know best) is there a game like EVE but with actualy character control?
Thanks. |

While i share your dislike i have to say it makes sense from a conceptiual standpoint -you can't have nice fps controls in large battles cause of player connection limits.
Aside from that here are other options that offer fps but mostly lack in every other aspect compared to eve: Black Prophecy - new space mmo with fps controls Earth&Beyond private server (there are no officials, officials were shut down) Pi*1337/100 = 42 |

Do you find it interesting how the games that try that approach go out of business while EVE keeps getting stronger? Just Curious. |

Originally posted by qazyman I do find that interesting actually. I myself like Eve for the most part, but I cannot stand the combat, as well as lack of ship control (which isn't the worst thing, but it would be a nice option).
As EVE progresses though I think it will attract more and more people, despite minor things they may not like. I, for one, am excited about (eventually) being able to walk on stations and see my character in motion. |

I share you thoughts, Bacon. Tried Eve a few times and couldn't get into it as much as I wanted to. In theory it sounds like a helluva game, but some things deter me from really enjoying it. And controls are one of them. Aison, what do you mean "can't have fps control cause of player connection limits"? are you talking about ping time? cause there are numerous large scale shooters out there and IMO a space battle is the same as FPS just with added 3D mobility. |

If you change to fps combat in space it means that you get following calculations additionally: 1. you need to calculate collision every frame as missiles can collide at any point with some ship instead of a predetermined path with an animation 2. you need to update player position constantly or lag will lead to misses which means ragequitting players. 3. unlike groundbased combat there is no terrain to absorb missiles. So as the fight proceeds you fps will decrease due to increasing number of missed missiles flying arround in space ( you can counter it of course by letting them vanish at distance X but its stil there)
Now this doesnt mean much by itself but its pretty clear that fps combat requires better connection and better hardware. Currently players get problems already with the current system. So this system is not really applicaple as it would make matters worse or to be more clear: it would be unplayable in large battles for the majority with older systems.

Originally posted by Aison2 This. I would actually be ok with manually controlling my ship assuming combat remains point and click and the point and click movement is still there as an option. You never pilot anything smaller than a frigate anyway, that's not a fighter. Most PVP is done with heavier ships, not really things you fly with a joystick. |

Originally posted by Zolgar Yeah, I think a lot of people do that then something happens, and they have their heart racing and their mind freaking out, and it changes the way they see the combat system. They may never really like it, but they see that it does have good points. WIS will add a lot for sure, I just hope it's not hyped so much that people end up saying, "What, I waited years for this". I think it will be a real test for CCP and EVE. If it really adds something fun to the game it will be major. |

Originally posted by qazyman People will be saying that. They're already saying that. Incarna is only going to introduce the Captain's Quarters at first. So no player interaction, yes you'll walk around and be able to manage stuff as your avatar but only in a single area by yourself. It's going to be implemented in phases and people are afraid it'll end up like old features that weren't as popular that got left behind. |

I would love to see someone try to hit an interceptor with fps controls personally lol. Though if I let controls be an issue I wouldn't play most MMOs and lots of games for that matter. That is one aspect I am willing to overlook the control scheme works.....and in EVE it works. I have never had so much fun PvPing in any other game than EVE. The controls are different, but the normal wasd of other MMOs just wouldn't work in the game.

EVE with FPS controls would be STUPID, because it would instantly nullify the depth and customization of all the modules/fittings. All the calculations that go into the game behind the scenes regarding all the different bonuses/modifications the fittings, etc.. do, would be impossible to replicate in a situation where you just aim and shoot. It would simplify the combat far too much, and would honestly make the game BORING, because there would SOOOOOO much less unique equipment. People don't take that into account when they start wishing for manual flight controls. People don't figure that the things that tell how fast someone can align, or how fast their guns track, etc.. would just be gone, and the game would be simplified ten-fold instantly. There's so much more in the game that relies on the way the game works RIGHT NOW, that it would be devastating to have changed the mechanic to a manual-flying/aiming system. It wouldn't be the same game at all.
In other words, EVE should NEVER have manual control/shooting, because it would destroy the integrity of the game as it is now. And EVE is what it is now because a large group of people LIKE it that way. |

I'd also like to see people manually hit ships travelling at 5 kilometers a second, even the slowest of ships in eve travel 100's of km's an hour in non-warp speed. And also when the engagement distances are usually measured in dozens of kilometers. As has been stated many times you're not flying fighters or small craft your flying craft the size of houses at smallest and cities at the largest. Hell the guns that go onto battleships fire car-sized shells. Maybe that puts things into perspective for you. |

Where do you people get off insinuating that FPS controls in Eve would cause massive lag? Have you played Eve? The world that you fly around in is essentially a large wallpaper...I'm sorry but we've all played numerous FPS games that have a lot more to worry about environment wise (when also factoring in all these FPS concepts you are all throwing around) when considering latency and ping. Eve is fine the way it is without FPS controls. The game isn't made to be played like an FPS. It isn't twitch. Thats all. There is no lag factor preventing it from being a twitch game. The game mechanics prevent Eve from being a twitch game. Plain and simple. |
