When you cancel your account (in your case 2006), your credit card information is removed from the account.  When a wow account is restored it requires a credit card to be reentered.   I'm confused how you could be getting charged?  That would require the hackers to enter your credit card information or something along those lines.
Most people read their email through a webpage, so I don't know what you think that is protecting you against.  Did you happen to follow the links in the emails that blizzard sent about your account being hacked, reset password, chargeback, etc?  No one likes to think they feel for a scam, but it sounds like you fell for a phishing scam.

I don't remember entering any CC, I usually use Paypal to pay, I don't think Paypal shows the CC info to the receiver does it? But Blizzard WERE charging me. Just about everyone I know downloads email to their email client like Eudora, Thunderbird, Microsoft mail, etc. both my parents has had their PC's buggered up from emails so that's why I don't download them and no like I said in my post I don't click links, I usually hover it over with my mouse to check the integrity.

PS- the phishing has gotten worse, just saw 3 more today, oh well time to add more addresses to block.

I was bored with all other games and figured ill go bk again to WoW for a week or two and see what the new expansion is all about.

Was not as easy as i thought it would be i do play many different MMOs and do come bk to them once in a while when i get bored with my Main MMO its normally easy i come bk reactivate the account and can start....not this time tho for my account seems to have been hacked and was banned.

Calling the customer support and being told it will take like 45 mins to talk to someone i decided to just start fresh.

So i set up a new email i created a new account i bought the whole pack again for a whopping 100$+ installed the game logged in and played for an hr.....

Today i log in again only to get kicked out of the game all the time i thought maybe i just picked a bad server and went to the server list to try my luck on a different server only to see that someone created a character on a different server already...

I of course was shocked how in hell could that be not even 24hrs old account not even enough time to get any of the fake mails to trap me into giving out my password and yet i am hacked already....

Like already mentioned i do play a lot of different MMOs and WoW was the only one i got hacked so far the old account i just led slide for i couldn't have sworn that i didnt get tricked but as for the new one there is just no way it could be my fault.

I ordered me an Authenticator now but cant help to wonder how it could possible have happened.

Blizzard really needs to take a look at their account security.  I've never had an issue with any MMO I've played getting an account hacked.  I've been back to WoW for less than a week and the other day I kept getting kicked offline for no reason.  It seemed odd so I decided to change my bnet account password and had no issues after that.  Today I get an email from Blizzard stating that my account has been banned for buying in game gold.  Lmao, all of my characters are fucking broke and sub level 80.

My wife hadn't played WoW since half a year before Aion came out, however we wanted to try Cataclycsm so I attempted to link her WoW account to a newly-created Battlenet account. When I tried to link the account it said it was already linked...

I raised a ticket and got it linked to  her Battlenet account after calling on phone. Once I logged into her Battlenet account to check it out, I saw it was into day 3 of a trial on Wrath of the Lich King (we stopped playing before this came out).

Now here's the thing: my wife hasn't used that particular WoW login for 18+ months and did not have a battlenet account, so noone would have linked to it via that. That login ID of hers was only ever used in WoW also.

Only think I can think of is that someone inside Blizzard could be looking at dormant accounts and giving out or using for themselves the details to add a trial account so they can strip mine it.

My Battlenet account was also hacked (discovered this when trying to play Starcraft2) and Blizzard investigated and found my WoW account had been compromised.

We have played since Beta and had never had a problem until very recently. Something messed up is happening @ Blizzard and this made us decide not to put more money into their games as we have no guarantee our account won't be compromised by internal staff.

I beleive this to, I got a mail on the 13th saying that my info and such was changed (account was cancelled) and reactivated by the hacker at hand. My son's account was active (cancelled that now and took WOW off his computer) I logged on and actually talked to the hacker (told him to enjoy the account, as he could have it).

I give up on this game as it is a straight lost cause, due to being riddled with issues that they can't and won't fix.

Yeah. All reasons I gave up on the game. I'm hoping for something to come along that will make me forget I ever actually enjoyed this game at one time.

Not to be pissy or anyting... But there is a million different ways you could loose your account on... i have a hard time beliving that blizzard does not have any safeguards against internal tampering... Since that would be illegal.

This have been a good conversation

I've mentioned this before on other threads but, my wife is a supervisor for a call center that takes calls for credit card and insurance companines as well as one of the top cell phone providers on the market.   At least once a year they bust a ring of people stealing personal information or somehow otherwise manipulting peoples accounts.  This kind of thing happens all the time.  Just because it's illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

The difference is that people at call centers get enough information to be useful outside of their work.  Almost every employees work revolves around dealing with that information, because of the nature of the service.

Most employees at an mmo have no need or access to account details.  Even CSRs have limited access.   That is why they cannot tell you your password.  They can reset it to some randomly generated password and you can change it on the website.

If some csr was stealing info, especially at the volumes that people here think they are, it would create such an easy trail to follow it wouldn't even be funny.  Just like how they catch people so easily at your call center example.

It doesn't mean that it impossible, but considering how wide spread and how long the problem is for wow it would mean that blizzard is incapable of keeping tabs on their own employees for years upon years now.

Also if it was that widespread and people did get caught, word would have gotten out.  Just like your example is showing up here.

The single lowest common denominator is that players are easily fooled and all to happy to give up their account information in any number of ways.

So...my account was hacked a few days ago. According to blizz someone tried to sell it, then used my characters to advertise a website. Have no more info then that. So it got my account suspended.
When I contacted them via phone I was told I was hacked for certain. That they knew this. At this time I was not sure. I just knew I was suspended.

Customer service was nice enough and referred me to a gamemaster. I have yet to hear from anyone. But I have gotten e mails and wanted to share them, or at least a vital part.

So after being informed my account was hacked and suspended in the e mail I then told in no uncertain terms that this was my responsibilty, and that if it happens again I will be punished worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you F'n serious?

my account was hacked. Blizz suspended my account and sent me an e mail saying...

"Account security is your responsibility. If your account is further compromised in the future more actions may be taken against your account"

Almost a direct quote,  Put it in quotes anyways, but I swear if it is off from the original it is only by a word.

Even though my account does not appear to have been compromised through my PC. Not going to bother to explain that as clearly hackers do not need access to our PC's to hack accounts. that is just a fact.

Are you F'n serious? I am a long time player with zero violations, am a victim !!! I get this ? suspended and threatened???

My family and I are leaving azeroth over this, which is sad because we were truly having fun.
Sad thing is the guy who did this will do it to you or the next guy and they will face this BS too.

As a note I would like to point out that my account does not seem to have been compromised through my computer!! This seems evident and won't bother to go into why at the moment. The point being that it seems it was not a lapse in security on my end and most importantly!...clearly hackers can hack WoW accounts without accessing our computers.

I was a victim here and have been a great customer since this game first opened it's doors. Yet the first time this happens blizzard responds my suspending my account and making threats to do worse?
Can anyone be so jaded as to not see how wrong this is?

I have talked to my family and we agree that it is a time for a change and have decided to leave Azeroth for good. I am truly sad over this. But I am now paying for a game I cannot play and being threatened. Crazy.

The saddest part of this to me is the people who did this will do it to you next. You will be punished and they will not. Makes sense right?

Oh by the way the guy I talked to on the phone told me he and his friend who also works for blizz had the same thing happen to him!!!!! think on that.

ps..the blizzard.net site is down again and customer service had no idea why and I was told that by the guy I talked to that his and his friends accounts were both hacked!   think on that.

I was just online in WoW and my son was sitting in the same room on his WoW account.

He got booted from his account and then I saw his character log back in while he was on the loading screen.

All of his characters then proceeded to log in one at a time.

I started swearing at the guy in whisper and got ignored.

Unfortunately my son's toon is the guild leader and we lost the lot.

How do we think he got hacked?

He installed the armory application on his Ipod yesterday and used it to authenticate.

I warn you, think twice about installing the ipod application.

Playing: Lotro, DFUW

Its not the armor thing. Its either your son pressed one of those mail that is a fake to get peoples login and pass. Or hes got a keylogger on the computer.

Search for malware here or search for virus here. When my game was hacked I had a keylogger and so did my friend. Another guy I know said he clicked one of those mails and went to a site that looked just like blizzards page so he logged in with his account but it gave an error. After that they stole all his stuff.

But we all got most of it back from blizzard since they where able to backtrack the transactions.

No problem, and when you get the account back after you talked to blizzard make sure you change the mail and the password.

no way my account has been compromised- yet I do not account share, do not follow phishing emails. Only way is if its related to this SoE thing and with the details leaked my password has been tried on WoW. Either that or WoW has telling porkies to ban my account.

Somebody answer this.

Not used in months- get an email last month from Blizzard saying my account under investigation as it was apparently for sale or something.

So sort this out. Do 2 x virus check- all clear. Change password to account.

I get another email today saying it's under investigation again. Only as this is in the junk file I am uncertain if it is legit or not.

I go via battle.net- login my account and there's a trial on it. I never put a trial on it.

Anyway this email turns out to be a phishing scam- I look at the link and it ends in ...tk.

I have now added a mobile authenticator to the account. But it is baffling:

1) that somehow my password was evaded again with 2 x virus check, and someone added a trial to the account.
2) that this phishing email saying my account was under investigation coincidentally has come at this time.

Which indicates possibilities:

1) The first email I clicked a month ago saying my account was investigation was a phishing email itself which I am 90% sure it was legit because I went to battle.net itself and there was a ticket there. However I will double-confirm this.
2) I have a trojan- which 2 good virus checkers has not picked up.
3) I have a WoW-honing malware that has picked up me changing the password.
4) I have a dodgy Firefox Addon
5) You can add trials to accounts just by inserting email accounts.
6) WoW are randomly adding trials to people's accounts.
7) WoW themselves have a security issue- ie username/password somehow is flawed and thats why the authenticators are needed.
8) WoW are doing this to draw me back into Azeroth.

Be advised that the "trial" might have been part Firelands promotion that Blizzard has been running lately. (they have been activating accounts for 7 days).

Also Blizzard will never send you an email saying that your account is being investigated, you're either banned (and they send you an email saying that your account is banned) or you're not. (again no email is sent saying that you are being investigated)

Blizzard has been giving some 7 day free trials to old vets here and there. I got an email stating my account was eligible for a 7 day trial, but of course I went to battle.net myself to verify this.

My account showed frozen, because I havent renewed in a year, but it had a link in my account that said start a free 7 day trial, or something to that measure. I clicked it and I was able to play for 7 days and then it went back to being frozen.

Yes, some are getting 7 day trials, however there are not ativated until the person logs into there battle.net account and clicks the link provided.

Also I have three emails I generally use. One for personal use, another for junk mail, and one strictly for my MMO accounts.

ALL three email accounts get hit with the same emails as you described above. But I noticed one thing, none of the battle.net emails used my name except for one. And that was the email for the 7 day trial which actually came to the right email address.

If your name is not listed in the email, I'd say 99.9% its a fake. If you do get an email with your name in it, dont assume it is not fake. Dont click on the links. Go to Battle.net and log in manually and check the information given out.
