Good Read. I liked this article and most of the articles on this site in the last year I haven't liked or agreed with.

EVE Online. Doesn't matter if you love it or hate it, whether as a Player you have done well playing it or sucked at EVE as I have...

EVE is the best. EVE is real. IMHO the best MMO to ever be created.

When the Suits get done ruining the MMO genre, with the help of many of it's Players no less, it will be EVE Online that is remembered in the history books, not World of Warcraft.

I've tried a couple of other MMO's , but they all tend to have the "disappearing people syndrom" - people that you used to play with on one shard just leaving for some other one, sometimes without even notifying you. Guilds that stick together and know what they are doing are mostly either "elitist" or role playing. Since I don't like any of those two groups, I'm yet to find a community in some other MMO similar to EVE's.

If you don't like EvE, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.  CCP has made their fair share of mistakes, but what other MMO experience is like New Eden? I have tried several, and have  yet to find one. EvE's community is no more varied than any other MMO out there. However, b/c there is Open World PvP, you get a segment that attempts to play the game in a fashion that you personally don't care for.

There is nothing wrong with you not liking it, but saying the community sucks is short sighted. If griefers or scammers are making your life miserable in EvE, CCP has provided you with the tools to correct it.

Instead of pressing the "petition" button or entering in /gm ...why don't you get some friends and DO SOMETHING. Why players can't see this is beyond me. If that is too much work, too much effort..then you should quit. Solo'ing a MMO isn't what CCP had in mind. It's possible, but you aren't really winning..are you?

I know I see this sort of mentality in the player-base quite often. Without penalties, the choice you make is trivial and the game just starts to get stale and stagnate. Hopefully other developers will realize that having penalties, even harsh penalties, makes the game much more interesting.

To expand on what you said, EVE is one of the few MMOs that allows you to actually lose. That is one of the best things about it IMO: it matters if you make a mistake or an error of judgement or you're just plain careless.

You seem to confuse game with reality. Customers are paying for a service. If the company fails to provide it, customers take their money elsewhere. If the company goes further and engages in severe corruption or fraud in real life, they can expect to be sued and spend time in court.

Like other apologists in the past, you seem to only promote and sanction it because you don't think it will happen to you or perhaps think that you will be the one on the exploiting end. If tomorrow, CCP staff were caught engaged in misconduct against your corp or your player account, I doubt you would be so positive about it.

You've made your point. Please stop hijacking the thread, it's against our Roc. if you hvae a beef, start your own thread.

I couldnt help but laugh at the title because of my own first and only experience with the community available to me when i played. It was bad and that is all.

Cool story tho, and it would make me want to play the game if i hadnt already tried it and seen that there is no actual gameplay.

Its very well done for just playing with a menu screen.

I don't agree with the OP.

The most obvious issue is that it's taken CCP years to create four 'captain's quarters'. That's a disaster.

CCP announced new content as an April fool's joke - that's pretty sad when you think about it.

Good article, but im going to have a rant here as the grammar is astoundingly poor.

Please learn to punctuate as it sets a terrible example for kids reading this when the author simply can't write.

It's not just this article, it's pretty much all of them.

It just winds me up to see this so consistently accepted.

BASIC grammar, for example, putting a comma before the word "and". The first line doesn't need a comma either, there is no pause there. Wrong from the very beginning.

My grammar isn't great, but im not a writer. Grammar is the fundimental tool of your trade.

Rant over ;)

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

A Good Sandbox isn't about your characters abilities. It's about the players ability.

It only looks that way to you. The truth is, the other players are just like you for the most part. Some are better and some are worse, but gap between is not that great. It just looks that way from a certain point of view.

ive been spouting off about eve for many years now on many forums across all kinds of games in terms of reference to what new mmo's lack! mmo's such as wow, lord of the rings, ever quest, startrek online. im talking about the majority of mmo games in the past 5 years or so.

I've never played Eve, specifically because the only person I know who plays IRL is a douche bag who has 5 accounts and does nothing but mine for a large corporation.  That seems like paying to work several extra jobs which appears to be the standard ideaology for sandboxes.  I make multiple comparisons to Perpetuum in this set of replies, and if you've played that game you'll know why.

none of them bring to the table the kind of envelopment that eve-online can provide the player with, it has unrivaled player interaction with the content, there is nothing else like it!!!

as some of the other posters have stated the game is not for everyone, i both agree and disagree with this. im assumeing these guys are saying this now because they have grown tired of argueing why eve the best mmo on the market and got fed up of trying to convince the unconvinceable to give it a chance.

Or more likely, they think they're part of some kind of elite clique for playing and don't want the masses on their playground, or even more likely, they didn't like it themselves and left (in a polite way).

too many people from games like wow and so on have little understanding of the concept of mmo and where this kind of interaction came from. all they know is the same simplistic mindless game experience that wow and other games like it have to offer. they know nothing of the possibilities that an mmo that has been created propperly with a bit of effort and conideration and passion can provide them with.

eve is a shining beacon of light in the mmo genre, its a crying shame to see practically all new games released takeing on the simplistic mechanics and progression systems of wow and  other games alike.

I agree that it's unique in a variety of ways, I'm playing Perpetuum at the moment, which is populated mostly with ex-Eve players and many of the mechanics are apparently similar.  It's been very love/hate so far for me (playing 1 1/2 months) but definitely different and that alone keeps my 3 accounts subbed.

I personally prefer the mech genre to ships in space and the game is fairly new so unlike Eve there aren't people with 8 years worth of assets and skills built up against you (although the early access people do have a huge advantage still).

people who think they dislike it shouldnt be so hasty, the ones that go round spouting off how crap eve is or how hard eve is or how unforgving eve is and how terrible it is clearly have no patience or perseverance qaulities about them.

Or, maybe you haven't been griefed as hard as Eve has the reptutation for doing.

eve is a game that requires thought emotion and contribution, its the eve community that makes eve great, its the players that play in this free form persistant world.

everything a player does has a side effect in the game, even the smallest action can trigger uncertain consequences within the game. every action has an alternate action.

example, you start playing eve , you dont have much cash and you see some one offering you some free stuff in a small jet can. it seems to be a fair amount  of resources that can be sold for a substantial amount of cash.  you have no clue what eve is so you take the items and think you have just been on the recieving end of generous charity.  all of a sudden the so called generous player starts shooting you and kills you, thats right he just set you up!! and you fell for it, and you only fell for it because you dont understand eve and the community of eve or the very fabric that eve is built upon. meanwhile someone else was watching this go on, this person just happens to be part of a rather powerful corporation which happens to be part of a much larger and much powerful alliance that dont take kindly to this kind of behavior from other players.

there is a name for every players action in the game, and each kind of player and their action is a valid play style in eve!!

This is where I start pointing out the contradictions in the rest of your wall of text.  You've been extolling the prinicpal virtue of Eve being how open and free form it is and how people can do anything they want.  How is that possible if there is a name for every action in game?  That must be a short list of actions then.

you have just been set up and killed by what eve players refer to as pirates/// some people will call them greifers but most know them as pirates. the pirates in eve dont really have much in the way of ethics of social skills. most of them want for only one thing easy kills and thrills, they would usually hunt for oppotunistic targets which yeild a decent revenue. but they tend to spend their times upsetting other players, mainly new players!!

goons!!! you could say this gamers community in eve are infact a form of pirates but with structure and community spirit.  eve is a game of perserverance and patience it requires resolve and will power. its not grind !!! its not the kind of game where you log in and sit their killing monsters to level up to unlock skills. its much much much more than that.

I'm guessing the grinding comes in the form of money, resources, and travel time, since that's where it is in Perpetuum.

every one that doesnt like eve hasnt played eve those that think they have played eve and decided they dont like eve havnt really played eve either. eve takes time. some people can instantly adapt to the eve experience. some take a little longer.

So you're basically a religious zealot then.  Replace the word Eve with Jesus or Allah or what have you in the above passage.  That's right, no one can disagree with you because Eve is the One True Faith apparently.  Lol.

eve isnt a solo game, approaching it with a mind set that you intend to play solo and have very litttle inteerest in guilds will undoubtedly make you hate the game. eve is about corporations and alliances, its about development and determination. its a game of skill thought and perserverance.

So once again, you can do ANYTHING you want in Eve .. except solo.  We're limiting the scope again right?  At least in Perpetuum you can have 3 accounts, 1 for combat 1 for mining and 1 for industry and solo a little bit, although gimped and at a huge disadvatange compared to even a modest corp.

when i describe eve to people in as short a sentence as possible  i simply say!! its the only game where you can be what ever your imagination allows you to be.

Right.  I think I've disproven that well enough.

thats what eve is, eve is what ever you want to be, ccp provide the game world, they provide the transports, they provide the means.  all you have to do is make use of it in what ever way you desire.

You're really hanging on this one point while providing contrary points of view to yourself.

people call it a data base game, i call those people brain dead!! you guys clearly know not of what you speak!!

some people call it a gank fest,  i call them new players with little gameing experience

Well if it's all corporations and gangs, then yes the aforementioned soloists will see that as being ganked.  As I stated at the beginning, I've never played Eve, however I have seen a lot of youtube videos (can't stand the speed and torrents on the eve-dl site), read a lot of articles and forums about the game and decided that it would be utterly impossible to start from nothing and moved on.  While there are 'solo' pvp videos they're definitely not the majority and the people picking the fights always have some advantage, and many of the 'solo' guys have scouts and remote repair or whatever else support as well.

people often complain that eve is just a game for player killers, well ive got news for you, eve is all about player killing, the idea of eve is to learn how not to be prey and become a predator, you dont need to be fantastic at pvp or have the best skills.. all you need is a team of players willing to learn.

So .. once again you can do whatever you want.. as long as it's be a pvper .. in a group.  (I personally prefer pvp, but that's not the point)

every single player in eve gets ganked every single player in eve is a target, every single player in eve dies more than they can remember. its the nature of the beast, the game is designed around realism and war.  its very much an intergalactic war/diplomatic/intel gathering/industrial/trade/research/piracy simulator!! and its huge!! so huge infact its currently the biggest game in existance nwith in excess of 6000+ star systems.

Kind of a meaningless metric with nothing to measure it against, although I will give you that it almost certainly has the largest "land mass" of any MMORPG out there added to by the fact that all people are in one place.

the game is amazeing, its so far ahead of the tech that its hosted on its hard to beleive it exists at all. not other game can claim or boast the things eve - online does.

its just brilliance the community is awesome too.

Actually Eve has a reptuation for having a terrible community, outside of Eve that is.  I suspect it's not that much different from any other game to be honest, maybe with a slightly higher average player age.

There are tons of stories about the 'scams' people run in Eve and how CCP supports them by not acting against them.  Nearly all of the ex-Eve players in Perpetuum directly reference the politics as the main reason they quit the game and came to that one.  Just reading through hosted video comments and forums there are a lot of trolls and mountains of elitism.

the boys and girls at ccp are very very clever folk.

Well, they're definitely smart enough to have 2 seperate server farms on different continents, unlike in Perpetuum where everything is located in Budapest and the latency and disconnects are often an issue.

Enjoy your game, but realize that people have different opinions, and that yours are VERY biased in favor of the game.  So biased in fact, I decided to respond and took quite a bit of time doing so.  I saw this post after looking at a Trial Key thread for Eve which looks like it's littered with scams as well =)

That shows at least an intent to be honest and to punish wrong doing. What CCP did with its cover up and blaming of whistleblower players is show it has a corrupt culture bent on preserving the privileges of their "in-group". And no, I don't think developers should be involved directly in guilds or being active players, forming allegiances and biases. Developers should be impartial and be looking out for the good of the game, not being friends with some players and enemies of others. That is not to say developers should not be open to player feedback, just that they should maintain a clear professional boundary to avoid conflicts of interest. Cheating effects are much much worse on a single server game as it affects everyone. Even forms of cheating such as giving your friends or yourself goodies does so since it gives unfair advantage compared to others that had to earn it the hard way. In cases where the goodies are limited, it means denying others from ever getting it (which is what happened in the first major developer cheating incident).

I agree but that basically doesn't happen with Indie games. The devs play, and whether they know it or not they end up picking favorites.  This is a problem currently in Perpetuum, even after they were very public about the insurance fraud incident, which I think shows they care, there are still devs in game who favor a specific corp/alliance above the others and it shows in their in game activities publically, who knows where else.  I suspect if this happened in Eve they just got better at hiding it but didn't give up their friends.

Currently Playing: Perpetuum
MMOs Played (most time spent to least): World of Warcraft (BG/Open world PvP focused), Lord of the Rings Online (PvMP focused), Warhammer Online (BG PvP focused), Global Agenda, Age of Conan, DC Universe Online (PvP focused), Runes of Magic, Allods, Aion, Fallen Earth

"A very special kind of stupidity"

It's also worth remembering that the events toxicmango is going on about happened in 2005-2006, and that the offending developer no longer works for CCP. He also unaccountably neglects to mention that CCP were constrained from taking any more action than they did by Icelandic employment law. There is also an internal affirs dept at CCP that is very active in ensuring that the devs dont illicitly influence the game, such that there have been no further known incidents in the last 4 years (and you'd better believe that if any devs were outed, then we'd know all about it)

I love Eve Online.

Its the only MMO on the market that allows players to make a difference and change the game map within days and hold onto Sov.

There are no levels to grind or exp as long as you have the ISK you can buy it. I am not forced to do missions or quests to level up either. It all happens on one server as well and that to me is mind blowing.

CCP bring out new content twice a year for free in other MMO's you have to pay about £30 for the new expansions for the same quests and a rehash of classes. This year we should see Incarna where we the capsuleers can actualy leave our ships and walk around inside the stations.

Eve Online is the best MMO out there its as complex or as simple as you want it, what ever you want to do you can do it. Or at least try to do it, someone some where always has a bigger gun or fleet. Yes there are the scams, but no one forces you to press the ok button so you can only blame yourself for your own stupidity. If its within the game mechanics then its possible to do. And the scammers always know there are enough stupid people out there.

Great game by the sounds and loved by elite members but new members not welcome or according to their community not needed or wanted.

They have an awful community on their main site who can be quiet rude to new players including their own mods not allowing new players to post...............anywhere.

The new of this was met by players making comments about how pleased they were and that new players are not needed as they cannot bring anything.

Fine, dont allow new players and see how long it lasts

you necro'd a thread to say that new players aren't welcome? I for one, always welcome new players. New players bring new ideas and different solutions to problems. Why would you say this? Did you get booted from the forums or a mod give you a warning?

Please qualify your statements.
