I like the GTA series of games so It hink it could be fun if done properly, but skills and lvling which i see as something required by all MMO:s needs to be implemented for multiplayer play.

I think if it's done by anyone other than Rockstar, it would flop. But I would love it if Rockstar did make an mmo version |

I think that your idea is very nice and i believe that even GTA is just a single player Game with a little tuning from Rockstar will get half the population of Knights and dragons Lovers play it. I strongly believe though that "Take 2 interactive" knows what the MMORPG Market has to offer (financially) and has this in its secret thoughts. Perhaps you could write to them and post your ideas if you haven't already done so. |

What do you mean skills and leveling required by all MMOs!?!?! That's the kind of backward thinking that is giving us so many crappy games. An MMORPG is simply a MASSIVE number of people in a MULTIPLAYER environment connected ONLINE where they have a ROLE (like the gangs, theifs, etc. described in the OP) which they are PLAYING during the GAME. What do stats/levels/etc. have to do with THAT? I've rarely seen an MMORPG deliver half the things the acronym implies. The genre has so much more potential than that. Why can't this GTAO simply have all those players trying to fill those roles that the original game provided for while trying to hold on to turf based mainly on their wits, their ability to control resources, the tactics they employ to keep themselves in power, etc. etc. Who says they need programmed quests or content for grinding up levels. Yeah, me and ianubisi already have been looking at that. However, we both agreed it'll be later than they are saying for launch. They haven't even hired a team yet. But I am definitely watching it in case it does manage to come out |

The title of this game (APB) is not GTA Online. Even if the designer of the original GTA is involved Rockstar is not so this makes me worry about the final quality of the product. But i hope that everything will go well and we will enjoy a good MMOG. |

A GTA-style game could probably be done online, but an MMORPG would be tricky. Due to the nature of GTA (commiting crimes like stealing and murder is common practice), I don't think the world could be easily tied into a massively multiplayer onilne game. It could work, perhaps, if the world was extremely large and worked on a real-time scale. Some games are meant to stay single-player... I don't think it would make for a very entertaining MMORPG, at least, in my mind, because I have this mental image of some thirty random guys jacking cars from NPCs in the same area at the same time. All the while, the local crime guild is raiding the bank with 48 people. Looking on the flip-side of GTA... it could be fun to have Cops vs. Robbers where players can choose between those two factions... or something. I dunno, it just feels like GTA should not be an MMOG =/. |

APB is created by the creator of the GTA franchise, Crackdown, his latest project, is finished, so now he is working on GTA 4 and APB.

I think a GTA style game would be fun, but not in the same setting as GTA. We have all played the couple GTA games out there and honestly it was getting a little boring on my last game(Vice City, I think).
The whole single guy, against the world, rises to a city gangster, needs to be revised and it would have to be made my Rock Star. I'd be interested. |

It's a novel idea, but I can't see how it'd work.
The big problem with GTA is that it's a game based around mass murder and plot. Now since the game is online, plot is more or less out of the question. So that leaves us with mass murder. We can pretty safely assume that in a GTA game, people are going to try to kill each other, unless we take out the ability to kill other players, at which point GTA really does stop being GTA. So we've got a bunch of people running around and killing each other. For a big online game, I can see how that'd work. But it wouldn't be a MMORPG in the normal sense. Wouldn't be much of a virtual world at all. It'd be a large scale action shooter, but that's about it. And you can forget about most sense of persistence; GTA is a game based around weapons, with a bit of emphasis on character development in the form of muscle building and maybe driving ability. Also, you have to consider what the player's goals are; A sandbox is all very nice, but it can get kind of boring, and pretty fast at that, unless you have something really big and detailed. So if the core of the game consists of "killing other people", then it wouldn't be much of a MMORPG. It'd just be a run-and-gun typed online game. Fun? Sure. But not a MMORPG. You could make a bunch of quests, but unless you rule out player-killing, it's going to be hard for anybody to get anywhere without being killed by their fellow man. Maybe you could divide the game world up so that there's different "Gang territories", with NPC gang members guarding territory, but the problem still remains that it's a game primarily about killing people. And in a game where you're expected to kill people, and everybody else is playing with the same thing in mind, you're going to die a hell of a lot, no matter what you do. And you can be pretty assured that that's going to kill any sense of persistence. So I guess as a large-scale online game, GTA could work if it was a simple brainless combat game. But MMORPGs are (in part) defined by persistence, and that's something that GTA simply wouldn't be able to support on a large scale. |

GTA online omg we can only pray one day it becomes a reality i can see it now having a PVP part of the game where you can race another player to a mission and who ever completes it 1st or with catching the least heat from the cops can become the bosses right hand man or other benifits (more money etc..) what an awesome idea hopefully rockstar can put it into work!

Okay i dont think you noobs are grasping the point so let me spell it out for ya as i am a game maker myself. Okay so here is how it works GTA is a good game and all and it has become multiplayer as the years go on, now if they were to suddenly ruin the games story by dumping an MMORPG on it then they would lose money and people would stop playing, but if say they made a new game with a new name like APB: Reloaded (The new version of APB as it is being re-released) then it wouldn't ruin the GTA story and it wouldnt freak a bunch of people out. Now as APB: Reloaded basically is GTA then a bunch of people would play that but it would cause a bunch of lag, which is why they asked for the help of the people who made GTA so they could make it not lag and they could both pay to get a better server and the makers of GTA would know what players want and would be able to help this new company that came out of no where to make an MMORPG like GTA. So now does everyone get it, APB: Reloaded is GTA with a new name. - Daniel 'Spinny' Robertson
P.S: I dont think there are going to be anymore games to the GTA series as now it is called APB: Reloaded. Anything goes in Emo Paradise dude. |

A GTA mmo...would only work as sandbox with territorial control. a-la San Andreas. EVE Online with cars comes to mind...with the 'safe' city in the middle and the desert/forest/mountains areas on the edge with little to no traffic, but ability to build your own shops and stores and what not and fight territorial warfare...oh my.
player-based micro-towns with gun stores and body shops and vehicle assembly arrays and what not...
I'd play it.
but a 2-faction themepark...no. No forced-faction-play imo. GTA is about free roaming causing trouble not about completing missions. :)
