Yes, there has been official word months ago. It's not in release (obviously) but is something they are not totally against adding post launch if enough folks ask for it on the subscriber forums. So, considering that process, it'd probably be at least a year or so from now before that would happen.

lol .Dont think WoW will ever add housing but personally im not much of a fan for housing and etc, just stupid time sinker, decorating your doll house etc.

For me one of the reasons to not buy Rift was the lack of player housing. Almost the only one.

There are more important things than player housing missing. Like a guild bank for example.

I'm not going to say they aren't going to do something anymore. They seem to respond to the people playing the game with what the people ask for. I would be more curious about what kind of implementation of housing would work in Rift.

The world is not instanced, but it's small. It doesn't seem like allowing players to plop down houses wherever is a good idea. That doesn't generally seem to be a good idea anyway since humans are so messy. Instanced housing has its own issues. Having housing is good, but seeing people with housing is better. If everyone walks into a door in the city and disappears, it's not that spectacular.

Some sort of mobile housing seems to be what would work, but it would have to be larger on the inside than on the outside. Would players just open a rift and pop into their house? From the outside, it's just a planar tear, on the inside it's a protected building in a planar zone. Perhaps you have to carve out space in another plane, build a transparent dome of some sort and there's your house. Anyone else in the area can plop a house down next to yours and it's fine, since you're teleporting there. It doesn't clutter up the landscape of the game, but lets players build their houses in whatever plane they want to build them in. I'm building mine either in the plane of Water or Death.

It would be sad if they beat Blizzard to the punch though. I am not a huge fan of housing but Blizzard is going on 7 years of "we are thinking about it"! Seriously Blizzard? Just say yes or no at this point. :)

At 7 years one would loqically think to ignore "we are thinking about it" statements and just accept it as a no.

Housing is not in, being talked about but nothing confirmed.  General feeling having listened to Scott... its not coming since they feel its a game killer.

I think Blizzard is got it working and waiting until the game shows "decline" to announce it and implement it. It would be a great way to gain back numerous subs.

I'm fine with it if it's like LOTRO with instanced neighborhoods. SWG's housing was nice when it began, but then it just became a huge eyesore, and there REALLY isn't that same degree of open space in Rift.
