In order for a game to come along and be a WoW killer or atleast a competitor, does it not have to be the same style? Does anyone believe a tetris mmorpg can be a WoW killer or competitor? NO! why? because it does not have what people who play WoW look for.

people who play  WoW like that style of a game, and call any other game that wants to compete a clone makes the arguement irrelavant. All games are "clones" by definition so no one should use that  as a negative to any other game.

Yeah, thats why I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World.

The Secret World has alot of potential IMO.

Been keeping an eye on TSW for a long time now. Havent seen much new info come up lately. As for GW2... Why the hell not it's F2P! Also after reading the GW2 Director's speach given at GDC I have hope for it.

Many of us care greatly for this genre, and some even have the foresight to see that the path it has been following (for an obnoxious amount of time) is not a healthy one.

If your buisness plan is to steal subs from WoW you've already lost as a developer. WoW doesn't just have "a peice of the pie" they have their own pie. It's time for developers to realise that and move on.

There are a lot of popular Western RPGs that do not break their game play down into "classes" and they do not have the same style of gameplay. Elder Scrolls MMO anyone? How about a Fallout MMO? Deus Ex MMO? Kingdom Hearts MMO? Monster Hunter MMO?(The last two are not western but offer a new style of game play) There are quite a few RPG/Action-RPGs whose gameplay and franchise could come to the MMO market without giving us the same generic game over and over again that wouldn't need to "steal" a peice of WoW's pie which can not be stolen.

Its all about the implementation and feature sets you chose.  MMORPG's don't always have to incorporate the same designs, for example classes, or boring humaniod races, or quest driven progression. Yet most games since WOW always include them in the feature set because they believe they must to be successful. 

There are those of us who don't want to see the same retread ideas, we want something new, or perhaps something from the past (Go DAOC Clone).  Most of today's games do have a strong look and feel about them, hence the term "clone" gets applied so often.

My game's not a WoW clone.  It's an EQ clone with more quests and faster gameplay..

Seriously I agree I have yet to see one game that can acurately be called a clone, they all have something different about them which is how the genre, any genre at all be it science, technology, graphics, games (fps, mmo's, spg...) moves forward.  Very small changes compounded over time followed very infrequently by  massive leap forward.

... I think I'll go watch X-men now.

The thing is, there is a notable evolution in most of the gaming elements there, from game to game. WoW polished the hell out of all the elements present in the previous games, and brought some new elements to the formula (instanced dungeons, pvp battlegrounds, talent trees).

Rift has taken a clear step backwards from WoW in every area. It's not as polished, there's not as much content, the questing is much worse, there's no elaborate PvP rewarding system, and on and on. And not only does Rift fall far short of the bar set by WoW, but it brings nothing new to the table. The soul system is just a thinly disguised, poorly-implemented copy of WoW's talent trees. So what are you left with? Rifts?! Please.

Really??? I fought the urge to reply to this guy. I have been playing rift beta for a couple months now and its WAY different from wow. They completely repolished wow's talent tree's and improved them. They encourage customization of classes which wow atm is lacking in completely. There are alot of cookie cutter classes in wow now. Yes there is not much content because they are not putting any new shit out for beta yet because they want everyone to be there at once. They will add the new content in the next open beta as they have in the past. Unlike blizz they want people to pay attention to one certain area where they are testing it at the moment.  Questing being the same? Wow you grind grind grind and do some dungeons. Rift you grind grind grind oh shit an invasion. Something aside of grinding to lvl and whats that you get gear and butt loads of exp for helping to complete them. Gimme a break dude. I played wow for 4 years Got to cata end game and hate it because it is the same repetitious shit it always has been.  This post had nothing to do with rift or any other mmo. It has to do with morons not understanding that there are no ripoffs, copy's, or clones. its all part of hte evolution of genre.

I never called wow an eq clone one time. I said in that theory you would have to. Iv played wow for the past 4 or 5 years and enjoyed it. I am just annoyed at peoples stupidity. Dont post here unless you have read my post in its entirety and understand what you are reading. I follow my posts.

Im not worried about it. My main issue is that when I am looking for a reason why I may or may not like a game. Like I have said before .

Instead of seeing realistic reasons of why i may or may not like this game i see nothing but the mindless masses posting (This game sucks because its just another wow clone or ripoff or etc etc etc.)
