Cartoonish and more realistic are not measuring the same thing as high standard graphics and substandard.

Something can be done more realistically and have substandard graphical quality, while another thing can be done cartoonishly, and have high standard graphics.

Substandard is a measurement of quality, while cartoonish is a measurement of style.

 well that is true but the art style goes very far in peoples personal reaction.

Case in point I have never seen a WoW screenshot that I dont find nearly insulting to me personally but my reaction to seeing the darkfall world the very first time i entered was dramatic and positive.

They could turn DiabloIII into a full mmo and launch it:)

Actually Vanguard doesn't have outstanding models, but does have great, highly detailed armour (which is what you see most of the time) and some great animation (others a bit variable).  If you've got a modern comp with a 4 or 5 series ATI card, or equivalent Nvidia, and a chunky CPU, and lots of memory, Vanguard can be cranked up to the max, and actually holds up pretty well against the likes of AoC even (although, again, not in absolutely every area, some were more finished than others).  I mean it was basically Unreal 2 engine with bits of the Unreal 3 engine mixed in (which was being developed just as Vanguard was being developed).  So don't give up on it, and screw the low population - you will generally find people if you need them.

More people here at mmorpg.com should go back to Vanguard.  Yes it's still got some bugs and needs work on some things still, but as a PvE game it's still outstanding, some of the dungeons are just superb.  It's the closest of any game out at the moment to having modern graphics and a giant, seamless world you feel you can live and breathe in.

I actually think what SoE have done to Vanguard is almost worse than what they did to SWG.  What they did to SWG was a greedy mistake, what they're doing to Vanguard seems to be cold-blooded, slow murder.

MINECRAFT!!!! best sandbox i've played so far its not free but werth it if you really want a sandbox game at core. you can make a mini mmo with makin or joining servers.

I dont think there is one that fulfils your criteria. Mortal Online is the only one that comes to mind but it is in a dreadful state so I would not recommend it to anyone.
