I just spent the last 2 day playing and I have to agree. The art work and skills are just so blah. The game looks decent but the art is very mediocre.

The skills for the mage also seems very blah. The nukes hit as hard as the instant cast and I'm not sure why. I also don't see any interesting fusion in abilities. It's all just very oatmeal without any sugar.

Actually, programming a full-fleshed mmo is taking a risk, a long and costy investment. The copy accusations are so cliché, do we have to go through all this for the millionth time just to give you the attention you need so much? What I saw after hours of beta is a good worthy mmo with a lot of features and singularities, enough said.

My biggest problem with Rift, as it stands, is that the gameplay has been stale since level 1.  A shaking camera every once in a while does not make the combat heart-pounding.  There is very little strategy in terms of skill usage... It's pretty much the same combo that you decided was best, and you repeat it over and over.  Very few skills are situational.  Overall, I don't feel like I'm playing a game.  I feel like I have a shitty job.  Tell me, please, what is fun about targetting a mob, pressing 2 3 4 5 6 1, and knowing that it will be dead, every time, by the time it reaches my mage?  Oh really?  Now multiply that by the 5,000 times I have done the same thing.  Why am I not getting paid for my labor?  Oh wait, I'm paying them.

You know, basically what you are describing is a keyboard to interact with a game, it has been around for 30 years. I think millions of gamers and thousands of developers are waiting for your revelation to replace it (in rpgs and rts at least). If you were just honest you would realize how devs are trying to come up with quests and stories to entertain people. Catching fire squirrels with a net for instance 8-P But yeah like soooo many things in life you have to repeat the same things untill perfection like kungfu and violin practice.

The character control in this game is abysmal.  I feel like my character has ice skates on.  When you compare it to, say DC Universe online's movement, Rift is several steps backwards from what some modern day MMOs have to offer.  The characters do not interact with their environment (one of the few things I liked about Aion was how the character's legs would bend to meet the terrain).  The animations are choppy.  The invisible walls piss me off.

The animations are fluid, running is good, combat is good, riding is good, swimming is good. Are we supposed to play a virtual movement simulator from a high-tech lab? No, we want cute toons and cute animations and Rift has them. As far as I know, you don't have invisible walls in Rift like something invisible blocking your path in the middle of nowhere. Except the initial tutorial zone the world was seamless for me.

The engine itself is amateur and characteristic of a small studio.  Yeah, you could take the Shadowbane engine and add enough polygons to make it look pretty, but it's not going to run well.  The game looks typical to most next-gen games with the graphics on max, but trust me no modern day computer is going to be able to handle a crowded area with those settings.  It is just not coded well enough.

Nice way to despise a studio because they are small. They have dozens of people afaik, and only the result counts. In the old days (Amstrad, Commodore, etc), you had even solo developpers or the holy trinity (musician-coder-graphist) creating hits. You don't realize how difficult it is to create everything from scratch, if they can tweak an existing enging for their purposes then it's nice. I have a GTX460 and playing everyting on high (not max though), the worst I had was 40 fps (during beta stress with like 100 people spamming effects and closing a rift on the screen, with a dozen of rifts open in Silverwood) to 65 fps in quiet areas. I never ever lagged (graphically or server-side). And the world is beautiful, so what are you criteria to condemn their engine?

Rift is a mediocre MMO that will only appeal to people who are unemployed and looking for a boring way to spend their time so it feels like they are working.  Bottom line is Rift, with all its positive aspects, IS NOT FUN.  If you think this game is fun you are delusional and have played so many hours of MMOs that your mind has lost all sense of comparison for what fun actually is.

About unemployed and bored people (nice prejudices by the way) I'd think you are of this sort, spitting your venom in a mmo forum and telling people they are zombies actually not having fun when the do have fun. I see in you a hater certainly incapable of coding a single C++ line and demanding things you don't know about and not deserving what talented teams are giving to you.

I think that this game suffers from the same problems that WAR did--it has no soul. The game just feels lifeless. It's kind of hard to explain but the game world just doesn't feel "alive" to me.

The main reason I wont play beta anymore is because I know if I lvl to cap, theres no way this game has the replayability for me to lvl another char after launch.

Having tried the Beta, I know it strives to be a good MMO... some will enjoy this for sure, they will invest time and money for this game. But for me in an overall perspective, it lacks personality or shall we call it "Identity crisis syndrome". We all know it got alot of its features from Wow to War and uses the same graphic engine of War but with some improvements but you still see some similarities. We all know, the banner of the Devs... that they really meant this game to become solid, fluid in terms of gameplay, they took alot of features from other mmo and made it much better. But in a saturated mmo market, i just dont know if this could be the best formula to make it the best game in the market. I guess i'll just put my hopes, to GW2 and SWTOR still...  I just can't feel the flare in Rift.

I'm not going to bother myself typing a line for line response to your post, because I honestly just don't care enough.  But I wanted to let you know that you made me laugh out loud on three separate occasions.

Comparing a MMO grind to violin and kung fu practice.  Priceless.

Mediocre is exactly how I described it to my friends.  It seems to try really hard at doing nothing bad, and succeeds.  But it also doesn't do anything particularly impressive either.  Just mediocre.

7.5 million pre-orders can't be wrong.

And yet they are.

WoW's popularity also doesn't make it a good game. It's not.

It is odd to state opinion as fact.  I do not like WoW myself, but i cannot say as a fact it is a bad game.  If people have fun in the game, then it is a good game for them.

Saying an opinion as a fact just makes you seem like a ego maniac.

Agreed WoW is a great game for alot of people but for some of us that couldn't get over the little kiddie factor Rift has filled that void.

When the kids grow up and mature they will realize what Rift is all about and will laugh at WoW. I see a mass exodus from WoW in the next year, it might not be Rift or GW2 but very soon if not now there will be a rapid decline.

I will always love UO and i still have my account active after 13 years, but the fact that WoW has run it's course and Rift and GW2 are that much better it's just time to say good by..

WoW was a great game for many people for many years but the horse is dead...

I've only been to level 12, but so far I think all the things that define rift (the Rifts, Events, Soul system) are fun, however the bad questing and lack of worldliness kind of bring it down a good deal, ultimately making it a game you play for a up to 4 months, if that. The beginner zone where the player is back in time, is good, but after that, it is just mediocre, if it wasn't for the rifts. They said that the amount of rifts are more than it would be when the game is live, but as of now the game is average and unmemorable without them. The event occurring less often would be fine though.

I'm going to wait till level 20 before giving a in depth review of it.

If they fixed up the 2 biggest issues I have with it, they would have a good lasting game, and I don't think those issues are hard to fix, they'll take a while, but I don't think it would cost too much money, but I don't makes games at all.

pre-orders mean nothing.  Pretty much every failed MMORPG released in the last five years has sold tons of boxes.

Interesting description. Could you maybe describe in detail or give specific examples what makes it feel lifeless to you, or no soul?

It's just a feeling I get when I'm playing it, that's why I said that it's hard to explain. I guess if I could put it into words, the game world just feels like a static backdrop for your character to move through as you run from quest hub to quest hub. It may be the art style, the sounds, the NPCs, world animations or a combination of all of those things.

Either way, I don't expect others to share my feeling and I could be completely off base, it's just something that popped into my head when I was playing yesterday.

Pretty much hit it dead on. I often think of it as 2011 World of Warcraft meets Aion. Nothing new, same old stuff.

Haven't read this entire thread but what I am taking away from all of this is you have yet another high fantasy MMO that takes no risks, takes the best ideas from Warhammer and Warcraft, but doesn't have either of those games' excellent IP?  Wait, why does anyone want to play this game again?

Because everyone is comfortable with the 'same'. It'll Aion it up, be hot for awhile then slowly but surely die.
