i just think the over-all air of it is a little insight of what the community could be like, which reminded me of reading general chat in wow. every mmo has trolls who muck up the channels, but the level of maturity the community offers usually determines the cleverness of the tolls. i can laugh at trolls who are witty, but the little screamers (OP) who are convinced that they are hilarious only deserve being ignored. when i tried Warhammer, it was screamers everywhere. when i play EQ2 , i see social interaction (same with CoV when i played, except for the few people who always trashed others for playing/making the custom missions). when i play wow i see anal jokes and ridicule. when i played aion/Aoc/ddo, i think it was an even blend of them all.
sure, i laughed. but not because it was clever. sometimes kicking a dead horse with redundant, overdone jokes will still get a little response. 'three men and a murloc' just sounds funny. but it doesn't make for a great community. |

I'll take his somewhat creative and somewhat humurous post over a self entitled cry baby, the usual troll we see. After all, there are people having their limbs ripped off, vaginas sewn shut and of course starving people everywhere, and some assclown thinks he's entitled to play some video game in this fine country that I live in. |

I've given up on MMO's, there is absolutely no creativity or imagination allowed in them anymore. Movies are the same way, I'm going to start reading books. |

sorry for the multi-post, but i forgot to mention (just to spite people) that when i did the trial to DF, i found the community to be among the best i've seen. it really amazed me. give it more time for development, and i would sub to it. i just felt like it was similar to playing Oblivion, only with Morrowid graphics, with an mmo format.
i'm so bored with MMO's right now, i'm just subbed to EQ2 for when me and the wife have spare time to grind somewhere. since Skyrim talk, i'm just playing TES4, player made mods. and okay, okay. it's not that the joke was not funny, as much as it paints a bad picture for 'in-game personality'. i'm really on the fence right now with this game, and the official site doesn't really give me what i need to decide. and i don't feel like trying for beta. though if anyone dropped me a key, i would probably do it anyway...lol. this and GW2 are the only mmo's that even have me curious with this years slew of new games. and i'd like to see more than the just 'clone' wars. |

Originally posted by Zairu Re: your quote of mine, if you've read half as many threads regarding Rift here as I have then you've seen the exact same points brought up over and over- that's all there is. Unless something changes drastically between this beta and the next you'll probably see the same detractors complaining about the same things.
Now, as far as the community, that's going to be a big wait and see come launch. The MMORPG forums are only a small niche of the MMO community, you're not going to get an accurate idea of how the community on any one server in any particular game is from reading posts here.
Hell, we can't even really get an idea of what community will be like looking at previous "clones." I played on and off on WoW for years, and CoH and EQ1 before that (for the majority of my time). Community didn't change nearly as much until WoW hit, and in that I played on six different servers, some Alliance, some Horde, some PvE and some PvP. I found in that game that Horde usually had less idiotic chat, and the between PvE and PvP servers Hordeside still had better community. Does that mean it's the case on all WoW servers? Certainly not.
F2P vs. P2P? I currently play LoTRO (when the servers are up, anyway) and I've played it before and after it went F2P- on the server I currently play on the general chatter, while busier than P2P days, is usually appropriate to the channel it is in and people are helpful- much moreso than before it went F2P- there is occasional retardation late at night on the weekends but I figure those players are just drunk.
What I saw in Rift beta 5 on Shadefallen RP-PvE was only a bit better than WoW chat, certainly not RP and definitely not mature and rarely helpful- but this is beta and people were just rolling up wherever. You best bet on checking community will be if they have server forums on the main website and watching that.
I personally think that any MMORPG with a focus on solo-able gameplay cannot be conducive to having a good community. There has to be some kind of repercussion the playerbase will be subject to for being jerks, and in PvE that means the possibility of being blackballed by guilds and therefore being unable to level/progress. In PvP it can be easier because others can just gun for you whenever they see you. One thing is for sure- in older games there were GMs that would set the standard and make examples out of the asshats, but these days it's rare they even have a cursory check of the chat channels or names going through the filters. |

Really enjoyed seeing a sense of humor displayed by the OP and several posters. For some, I think Sgt. Hulka says it best.: "Lighten up, Francis". Speaking of lightening up, the lens flare about made me spray beverage on my keyboard. Well played. |
