Check Rift in the beta event this week too! New game combining elements from both and other mmos and maybe you will like it. :) |

If your going to think about everquest, try out everquest 1 when the time locked progressions servers open up in march if you wanna experience some classic MMO gameplay. Other than that I cant recommend the 2 games you listed. |

I hate to say it but I'd recommend WoW for a first timer's MMO- they baby step you through every step of the way for most aspects of the genre. That being said, expect the most shallow gameplay and storylines. Best advice would be to level through as much as you can in the trial, get used to instances and such, then drop it. WoW is a great tutorial for carbon copy fantasy genre MMOs. |

Originally posted by Spiritraiser Not everyone is head over heels in love with Rift, and the author was asking about EQ2 and WoW specificially, not alternatives.
With that out of the way, allow me to play the devils advocate once more and recommend WoW over EQ2. I've played both for extended periods of time (I've played WoW off and on since six months after it was released, and EQ2 for a little over a year), and between the two I feel that WoW is the better game.
That's not to say EQ2 isn't a good game - it is. There's a lot of stuff it does better than WoW, especially when it comes to character customization, roleplaying, and world immersion. However, WoW trumps EQ2 in the most vital of areas - gameplay. Say what you will, but WoW's core gameplay is fun, addictive, and easy to grasp. It's the main reason why they're the only MMO to see consistent, steadily growing numbers post-launch. <3 |

Here's MY opinion: I like WoW, I like EQ. EQ2 was ok but wasn't great. WoW kept my attention well into my 2nd and 3rd toons. By maxing toon number 3, raiding was beyond me. I hate the WoW mentality of needing GS's and if you didn't Raid you weren't worth anything. EQ2 was ok. I think I got to around lvl 40 or so and never ONCE grouped. The problem was is I missed a WHOLE ton of content. I finally got into a guild of good people an they took me through one of the original lvl 30 endgame dungeons and was telling me all this interesting stuff about how such-n-such sword was impossible to get before and people would camp it, etc, etc. Ultimately if I can't experience EVERY potion of an MMO, I don't enjoy it. Losing out on GOOD instances and important quests for lore takes AWAY from that. Both WoW and EQ2 have lost that. I hit dungeons only because I could find a group for them. All lore is important IMO in a game. That's part of the journey. |

OP, if you are indeed new to MMO's, you came to the wrong place. People here generally hate WoW with a passion and would never recommend it but it by far has the largest community, the most content, the best and most diverse quests, flows and streamed the best, and is the most accessible. The new expansion (which you'd get to experience a lot of it even if you don't buy the expansion) really adds a lot of value to the beginning of the game. Honestly though, I call troll. You said you are new to MMOs, your first one being a game that came out a week ago, and yet you really like raids and large boss fights? You couldn't of played any of those things or know if you like them if you just starting playing MMOs last week. :/ And as for the underdog part you like, SOE is HARDLY an underdog. It might be in subs to WoW but SOE has a part of the MMO genre since nearly the beginning. |

I wish people would stop saying this. They asked for one or the other, not both. It's totally unproductive to the discussion, doubly so if they're already away of said trials. <3 |

I'm having fun in EQ2 again, but it's dead. Starting out new you'll have to go forum hunting to find a worthwhile guild to get in to enjoy anything at lower levels, and it's a LONG WAY to the top. Unless you got some cash to drop on some xp potions. WoW is more alive and easier to access. Their pros and cons to me are really similar at the moment. Yet in EQ2 I'm finding that my progression post level 60 is more of an issue of having too many things to do, while in WoW it's puggin' like my 1999 prom all over again.

If you are new to the genre and its just you and a buddy, don't chose Wow in WoW: The guilds/player base is too settled, so unless you have some extraordinary skills to offer most endgame will be closed to you. Leveling has become a gankfest on PvP(the only real way to play the game) servers so you will spend more time running from the graveyard to your body than grindin. 80% of the ppl you will meet are no life on wow 24/7 dillholes with no compassion and even less sense. So yeah, I would go to EQ2 first. |

Originally posted by Cereo Sorry i stoped reading after the most content, the best and most diverse quests Are you serious here or just trying to troll WoW has very little content compared to Everquest 2 and if you want facts Everquest 1 has more content then both games combined Maybe not Quests but raid wize no one has more End Game then Everquest 1. As i have stated on the first Page my suggestion is still EQ2 the journey to max level is so much more diverse now there is alot of players after level 60ish that you can raid and etc with but getting up to there is a little difrent it might feel empty or not many players but it also depends on what server your on . Eng game EQ2 has by far the better Endgame out of the two and its alot harder then WoW's Endgame if i can find the study where two guilds switched places from EQ2 to WoW and the WoW guild went to EQ2 you would laugh at what happened to the WoW guild. But like i said i dont hate WoW i just dont think its the better game at all EQ2 dosnt get the credit it deserves. I play it vanguard and Everquest Everquest 1 is my fav and always will be nothing beats it . I did like EQ2 alot and have a bunch of level 80 toons ,Warlock,Guardian,Necromancer,Brigand,Ranger,Mystic and was leveling a zerker as well for awile if you decide to play EQ2 and want some pointers dont be afraid to leave me a PM and ill try and point you to the right way. |
