Originally posted by Gintoh You can build cities and control/conquer territory on the original continent. There are 3 continents in the game, the two southern ones are like at war with each other and are where the starting zones are at and the northern one (the original continent) is mostly empty and full of unique and valuable resources for the players to fight over. Only the northern continent will be conquerable by players (as far as i know).
As for being a pure crafter, Jake Song said in an interview that it is impossible to progress through the game without engaging in combat, take that as you will. "I will Turn your name into a synonym for weakness" |

Hmm, no open pvp and player looting I don't like that. I don't think it should be like DF where everyone is PK, but it would be cool if it was open PVP like EVE where there are some places where it's basically impossible to gank without getting killed but you still can try and some less secure areas. And the PK's would have lots of consequences put on them so it's not constant gankfest but still more open. Also loss in PVP is good, maybe there would be an Earthrise insurance system so not all of your stuff gets lost, just some.
Also the crafting doesn't sound as good as say SWG. I don't like how you're forced to combat.
TBH i'm sick of fantasy and somewhat generic mmo combat, it's annoying and kinda turns me off. I wish there was a proper FPS sandbox (no not shallow crap-fests like MO and DF) with the depth of EVE or SWG, maybe it would have a Tabula Rasa combat system and it would be good. Just not fantasy hotbar spam-fests please! Earthrise looks like it could be bad but recent events such as the awful beta video make me increasingly skeptical of the game. Plus the fact that it's releasing in Feb even though it doesn't look close to being finished. It makes me think it will release as an incomplete mess and be doomed to the fates of all the other half-done games that had tons of potential. |

Originally posted by Gintoh EVEn (see what i did there?) EVE is a rare case. Its a larger niche than most games due to it being sci fi with space ships. Its still hard to play however and I have a feeling that if it wasnt FFA, it would do even better. Honestly, I know some love FFA pvp in sand boxes, but that mentality is the same reason why Theme Parks are becoming so popular. Sand Box mmorpgs are great, but the moment you turn it into a hostile FFA PVP fest, you drive away the people who are curious to like that style. FFA PvP is a niche, it does not and cannot appeal to the larger audience. Faction PvP has always been better at bringing in the larger audience. People generally would love to have the depth of UO again, but without the nastiness that comes along with FFA PvP and Full Looting. I hate to say it but you guys are the minority in that area. I love PvP but never found FFA PvP to really be good. It seems to serve one type of person with a specific and often not very friendly mentality. |

Hmm, see, the main reason that I like ffa is b/c it just allows more freedom. I don't like how with most ffa games it turns into b/c there are little consequences for pkers. It would be cool to see a game where people could pk, but there would be huge risks for the pk so it's not mindless ganking. With EVE alot of it was high-sec where you technically could people, but you would be blown to smithereens but you still had the choice to. I like that. gankfest. Also (and I know I keep bringing EVE up lol) but that game seems to have a mature community and ffa pvp so it can be done. Also maybe said game wouldn't be full loot, perhaps they could only take like a few things, so it's like a partial loot system, but there is still risk in pvp but you only lose some stuff not everything. |

I agree.. i think there should be FFA PVP but PK's should have very hard penalties.. like loss of a few levels if they die.. so that they would be rare.

Originally posted by EndDream Yes, if it is sandbox I think FFA PvP is a necessity for the simulation that has action and reaction to it. However safe zones of grades of civilzation where npc AI militia can attack players breaking the rules (eg guards in oblivion or DnD) to regulate such players and possible penalties but still % chance they might get away with it but lower probability/higher risk/harsher penalty in higher grade civilized areas aka "rule of law". Looks good, sounds good, but I fear it has DnL written all over it. Don't get me wrong, I'd be the first to sub this game if they could actually pull it off... but I highly doubt it! |

It certainly looks very interesting. I hope there's an open beta english test this year in which we can participate, cause my understanding of the Russian and Korean language is non-existing :) ~Have fun~ |

This looks awesome, I just hope they don't jack it up. "Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever." - Noam Chomsky |

Beta is open to the public as long as you sign up on their forums. They send mass invites out every couple of weeks to the new arrivlas and the last ones went out about a week ago. The game has less than a handful of developers (3 for sure) but the whole thing is English based. Don't expect weird Arabic fonts or Korean text floating around the screen. Download is relatively small and free, also has minimal specs so it works on most laptops. The only thing you pay for is the option to "build your own realm" if you choose to. A word of warning though: This game is not a free-for-all PvP UO type of universe. There are severe limitations and barriers in place that prevent most PvP activities, except for in one or two small areas. Don't expect the thrill of PvPing or theiving from others the same as UO allowed. This game is a basic hack and slash dungoen crawl that lets you cook your own food and chat with other people while you find bucket-fulls of loot and grind up your skills. It's like a co-op Dungeon Siege game. |
