Hi hi!
These seem to be the next two big games coming out. I know Ive been waiting for both of them but i rarely play 2 mmos. We put so much of our time into an mmo that i like to focus on just one. Having said that... I think the first one of these to be release might have an advantage over the other.... Unless one of them turns out to be all hype but i dont think thats the case.

Well, RIFT is available on Steam for a spring release.
RIFT has started close beta, need I say more?
Anyway, I'm not in the beta, but from the videos I've seen TERA is slightly ahead of RIFT on my agenda. |

Rift will come out first because they have already began their closed beta for the US whereas TERA is still doing Korean Stress Testing. Rumor has it that TERA will be released in the Fall of 2011 and Rift is set to release Spring of 2011. |

I'm excited for both games, so as long as they are polished enough to enjoy at launch whatever comes out first i will be buying. Sad thing is, if i enjoy the first one, i will not even purchase the second. Reason being, like you OP, i only play one MMO. Playing: Nothing |

I think most people are betting that Rift will get released in spring if testing goes well. According to an interview with Bluehole Studio(TERA's developer) in Korea TERA is slated for closed beta testing in North America sometime in the first half of the year, however En Masse Entertainment(TERA's NA publisher) is being secretive and quiet like always. TERA will however most likely release in Korea sometime later this month or sometime early next year.
It's hard to say which one will release first. If Rift's testing turns out catastrophic it could get delayed, and same could happen with TERA. I'm however betting that Rift will get released first with TERA in one of the following few months. |

TERA has updated thier FAQ to say that they will be announcing more about the US beta after GDC 2011, which doesnt get over until March 4th. i would assume with that info that were not going to see the US release of TERA until 3rd or 4th quarter of 2011. |

I'd also lean toward Rift. They are leaps ahead of Tera on their pre-commercialization promotions, pseudo-community beta and as mentioned, RIFT is also available on Steam for a spring release.
Aside from that, I think Rift will have more of a Western appeal as opposed to an Asian-feel and appeal that I get with Tera. Rift's graphcis, videos, and breadth and depth of dynamic, as opposed to static, massively-multiplayer game-play, mechanics, broad pvevp landscape that I have been reading about, really seems like Trion is very serious about melding the best of the mmorpg's on the market. That without being as pve-centric as LotRO or PvP-centric as Darkfall, as redundantly mundane with static PQ's as WAR, and as battle-ground instanced for faction vs. faction as WoW.
My greatest fear, as it relates to Rift is that it takes the best of the past and is nothing more than a homoginzied repeat of the most mundane of WoW/LotRO/WAR. |

Some posted here that there will be around 7-8 beta events for Rift but I am not sure if that is confirmed. It looks like there will be two weeks between events (using weekend 1 and 2 as the example). So that means we will have around 14-16 weeks of beta at least. That would mean beta would end in late February or early March, if everything goes well. So I think a late March or early April release date is very viable. So yeah Rift first. |

Answer to the OP is we don't know. From all the beta feedback Trion is receiving I would be surprised if they are still on their track on launching spring but unfortunately it seems this is the case. |

There is no speculation here, Rift is coming out in February, TERA has no release date. |

Rift is no where near ready for a February release. If it does then consider it rushed. Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries... |

So many people complaining about Rift are actually complaining that it isn't their type of MMO, not that it actually isn't finished or full of bugs.
Rift isn't for everyone, get over it. |

Originally posted by bobfish Just my opinion is all, Not enough testing, looks the same as when it was shown at the conventions, not much has changed with the client sence then. Tera has been in testing for a year now. Combat and skills has been overhauled and skills added. Crafting has been redone, UI has had a complete overhaul, Crystals & Glyph system has also been added. The launch client has been stress tested and they have eight months worth of extra content ready to be added after launch. All of this was from feedback they got from the testers in FGT & CB's. Originally posted by Sfaliara I could see the game launching in late may. Early spring would be a huge mistake but making it ready in 5 months seems plausible to me. But my guess would still be TERA even though I have better info about Rift. |

In my own experience, it has always taken a long time for games that first release in Korea to be translated / localised into English and to make it to the Western market. Now, I don't know about TERA specifically, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case with it as well. RIFT seems to ramping up their beta tests, so I would bet on it releasing first in the west. |

Originally posted by bobfish That's not how it works bud. If you want Rift to be again one of those games that are not polished or are missing in their core game then you are right. The company shouldn't rely on fanbois and release a messed up game, we've seen what happens with this case. There are many things to be done with the game. |

Originally posted by bobfish Actually, if you count GW as a MMO it was in way better shape. LOTRO was slightly better as well but had very little content at launch. Almost every single MMO release lately prove to us that releasing a game before it is ready is a mistake. It is true that the game is in pretty good shape right now (but so is GW2) however if the GFX engine not performing as good as it should, the most common complain I heard from the beta leakers besides taste is performance issues. So my guess is that the game will release late spring, in mars would be a mistake. |

People feel that it's a bad thing to push back a launch date, it's not. When a game launches is not important, Having it launch in the best possible condition is what is important here and that means taking feedback from the testers and overhauling the game to fit their needs, and that takes time. Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries... |
