First, I want to say that in this disscussion let us acknowledge Eve is the exception is not only one of the best MMOs, but could be argued as the best Sci-Fi MMO. But the reason I want to disclude it in this discussion is that it (for now) only has space flight. I would like to focus on more "traditional" on-the-ground MMOs.
What I am concerned about is the lack of decent Sci-Fi MMOs left. SWG needs no explination, Anarchy Online has shown its age, Tabula Rasa died quickly (to my dissapointment) , Global Agenda is a half-decent third person shooter, Planetside has been staying afloat with a small community, ect. Then for new games you have Huxley which is drifting out with litte information (is it dead?) and Earthrise which is doing good in beta but lacking in a real release date. (Unless they ninja-release it this month) Another Sci-Fi game could be Fallen Earth. While a Post-Apoc game it still fits into the category. My opinion is that it has the best community in any MMO, but the PVE combat kills it. At least for me.
So, are there any good Sci-Fi MMOs out there that are worth mentioning, talking about, or trying? I am looking for one to play but all I can find are half-dead dated MMOs and a few hyped games comming "Soon". What is left for us Sci-Fi junkies to jump into? |

Earthrise is in development and if you're someone who considers Star Wars to be sci-fi, SW:TOR will release next year. |

EvE may be worth checking out and getting started in now as Incarna should be out like next year I think? Purely for laughs you may want to check out STO. Twitter: @Nephaerius |

you should know the answer to that and it's name shall not be spoken as i find it not worth my time. Companies are not into scifi mmo's because they are a niche demographic of the mmo players. |

You may want to try Perpetuum. Similar to Eve, robots instead of ships. |

Check out Perpetuum Online, its indy developed and compared to Eve in many ways. It is basically Eve with robots on a planet instead of ships in space. Again, it is indie developed and was just released last week so dont go in thinking it has all the bells and whistles as WoW or Eve. Their is no cost for the game, just a 10 bucks per month charge so you can check it out for 30 days for 10 bucks. They dont really have a sub fee, it is more like a pay-for-time cell phone where you buy codes to add time to your account.
I am a lifetime subber to STO and a VIP in LOTRO but have been spending the last week in Perpetuum. Its a nice break from the traditional MMO's and it has open-PVP.
P.S. Dont hold the lifetime sub to STO against me, I had a lot of work going on at the time and did not get to play but a few hours before I pulled the trigger on the lifetime sub. Yes, I know I wasted that money. |

Well you cant really say "Are there any left" because they have yet to make rise. There is The Secret World and SWTOR on the horizon, also Warhammer 40k TDM,HiRez's Tribes reboot,Firefall,Planetside Next and probably Blizzards next mmo etc.Huxley is waiting for Webzen to start doing something with it,also there is Hellgate Ressurection yet to be released westward. Also have Black Prophecy in cb and Taikodom LU(think Freelancer in a sandbox) nearing cb for space ship shooters. As far as what is out now you got Eve,AO,SWG,FE,Neocron and Perpetuum is all that I can think of.Oh and STO,CO and COH/V forgot those.=) |
|
Yeah I phrased that first paragraph completly wrong. I just wanted to not insult people by skipping over EVE online. I forgot STO, but that game was so boring in my opinion that I am not surprised. I just tried Perpetuum and for some reason it just did not click. It was a really detailed game though and I am impressed an indie developer made it. SWTOR is a game I really don't want to get my hopes up for. Though BioWare has never let me down. |

Jumpgate Evolution, taking awhile to release, apparently because they want to get it right and well polished, its hard to get any information from them. But we shall see maybe they will produce something good, or maybe something crap, like somany before them. SKYeXile |

But last line i strue SCI FI is a smaller genre compared to fantasy , but honestly most of us want a change . SWTOR no matter how much they try to hide the hype , is a SCI FI . they can bash it cause its wow with lightsabers and blasters .. (wow in meaing ease of play )
But like said before in this forum , almost all sci fi are half baked down , The other SCI FI project is halo MMO called TITAN (from blizzard) that will be hyped up in 2013 , release date 2014
Thats all we get so far , cause the other one dont look good sadly :( especially compared to SWTOR . |

SWTOR isn't worth mentioning because it will play just like WoW. If you are into WoW and like SW you'll like it, but that doesn't make the game good or unique Jumpgate Evolution, Perpetuum, Firefall, and Earthrise all look ok.

So wait. Games that play like WoW aren't good? Even when they have better graphics and a different angle? Because they play the same as the most popular MMO in history? You've lost me. SWTOR is gonna be a good game. |

Originally posted by drake_hound No, you didn't explain every game. You explained 90% of Theme park mmos though. There are games coming out with FPS mechanics, and there are other games coming out that are sandbox games. Sandbox games play completely differently than games like WoW. EvE is an example of a sandbox game. Can you compare that game to WoW? No.

Originally posted by Asheram EvE is only boring because of the combat system. All its other systems are 100x better than WoW.
