... how you can play SWG as your first real online game and withstand the whole "getting backstabed" part only to come here again to preach DNL as "ZEH BOMB" only to be backstabed again only to come back to preach Warhammer as the next big thing only to get dissapointed beyond belief only to come back and play Aion as "the best that's out now" to come back once AGAIN sitting here all excited about Guild Wars 2...

What is it with theese games that you just cannot get over with... I'm so bored with not having a real MMORPG to play that anything feels shallow -.- I almost fell for WoW for a while but I'm not gonna sink that low just yet.

This better get out soon >.<

While I respect both you and your from dusk till dawn quote I can clearly see that you have been burned in the past. Let me do what I can to accurately tell you what my belief on the matter is. Gw2 is different because it comes from a company only trying to improve on a product that is already well liked. If you throw that in with the same basket that is what we already know and have actually seen... you get hype. Its just that easy.

Yeah... guess your right. I liked Guild Wars. My only problem with it really was the way you gained skills. I always wanted a bigger and more rich GW. And I think this will be interesting to see how it develops.

Talk to me about "improved" versions of products that indeed were well liked...AC2, EQ2...

EQ, while a classic in fact - people were peeling off of the game, and SoE saw it fit to tailor a sequel to maybe grab back some of those unsubbers. Myself was infact included in that bunch. I was hooked on EQ2 for all of 3 weeks.

It was potentially a good replacement for EQ... but it just wasn't, I would say the best aspect of the game was the fantastic community. That, and it came out at the same time as WoW. Recipe for failure, See the movies "Equilibrium" and "The Matrix" which of those have you heard of?

AC2 was just poorly designed and pushed out too soon, the world felt vacant and the grind was pretty much the only aspect of the game that was indeed complete. I enjoyed both games for a limited time, I think the major issues were that the games were totally incomplete. I do remember the first major patch of AC2 where some mounts came out, and there was a crazy outpost where you could compete over who got the most experience for a kill...

Good times.

Guild Wars 2 however, comes from a legacy of producing entirely complete products with no monthly fee and backing up what they offer. I am not saying these other companies are bad, quite the contrary. I simply believe that GW2 has already shown us what they are willing to do to make sure their product is well liked and fun. Who else do you know that works that hard to market a product to you, on the sole premise of having fun?

For my part, I will say that I played GW1 and I must say that I never saw another company promise a lot of things and delivering almost all of them. And the fact that the game was already B2P and still had A LOT of updates, and some new features every now and then that were free was even better.

I played a lot of F2P games, specially mmorpgs, and rarely saw a companny do the same amount of updates, new features and fulfilled promises as A-net with GW1. And in top of that, the community of GW1 was absolutely amazing and friendly, only 1 or 2 games that I played could have a comparable community. I didn't even had to pay for the expansions to still get back playing the game 2,3,4 or 5 years later. And every time I need help from the customer service, I had it really fast.

I can't compare with P2P games, I never played them except for the trials (except Lineage 2 and a bit of WOW). But I can say that all the things I know from the P2P game compannies comes from internet search and from friends, and A.net is more relliable than most of them, and they work with the goal of making what their players want and not making what is "the recipe for a successful game".

Other big difference I see in this game that I haven't seen in the "new" mmorpgs since +10 years ago: GW2 is finally breaking what is considered to be "unbreakable rules of building MMORPGs", and the others only could bring 1 change or 2.

Quests system, holy trinity, "cookie cutter builds", KS, PK, grieving, camping, one-hit-kills, and a lot more things that they are working to change.

Beeing completely honest with their players by saying what the game has already implemented, instead of promising what will have and not delivering, or instead of only showing one good feature and don't talk about anything else.

While other compannies follow almost everything in building a successfull mmorpg simillar to games like WOW (only an example) with only 1 change or 2, A.net is trying to do a completely new game with new features like Dynamic Events, Traits, Sidekick, skill combos between players, different kind of reward, and more.

I know your feeling of beeing disappointed with games that are beeing developped and when they release they fail. I felt the same too. I was waiting for more TERA, TOR and B&S since 2008 with all their fantastic graphics and combat, when more than 1 year ago I started searching for what GW2 was really about (I knew they were making it in 2007-2008). When I read all the info and they released even more, it cannot be comparable. I was waiting for something less and I knew they were professionals so I thought it would probably be a good game, but by knowing they were doing something so different from what we've seen before, I was completely . And, as I said before, they are proffessionals in delivering what they promise, because they probably have already develloped the things they promise.

I bet that all the other mmorpg devs started beeing honest with what they will deliver, there could be only 2 consequences: 1- the players see that the game only has 1 or 2 changes, but all the other things are the usual boring and "unbreakable rules" of past mmorpgs; or 2- they start seeing that the players don't want a lot of the things the game already has or was promised, and start building some of the things from the beguinning.... but what company has the kind of patience and money to let devs do that? I don't even know how A-net could pull of the "when is ready" release date from NCSoft, while beeing funded with their money.

PS: wow, I really talked a lot in this post

I don't know really....I mean, I only got GW Nightfall CE and have a long time to touch it but I thought the only "serious" updates ArenaNet has done in GW was the standalone expansions and EotN (meaning almost no free updates)

It got updates. I never bought expansions because I didn't had the money, but I'm sure it got "serious" updates because everytime I login after some time without playing it there was always something new. And everytime I played for some time I got a lot of updates in every instance that I knew I had already played on (I had to wait for the updates to end, I had really slow net connection and a not so good desktop for the time lol). But it never got new classes and a lot of other things that were in the expansions of course. But the same goes to a lot of P2P games.

Ex: in WOW you have to buy expansions too to have a lot of "serious updates" and new classes... and I heard that you can't play the game without buying the "new expansion". It's like saying "you are paying us monthly for new things, but everytime we have something BIG you have to buy it too or you won't be able to keep playing or to play again later if you stopped for some time". If a lot of P2P games are like this, than of course the companny of games like GW1, and GW2 in the future, will have more trust from the players.

sorrow's furnace

war in kryta

hearts of the north

winds of change (upcoming)

skill changes

ai updates

ridiculously low server downtime (under 12 hours total i believe)

did you have to pay for these? no.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

They also added heroes like MOX separate from the expansions which had it's own quests/content associated with it.  Overall I was very pleased with the amount of free content that was added with Guild Wars1.  If GW2 pumps out expansions/DLC content like the first 2-3 years of GW then I'll be a very happy gamer.

I actually kind of take for granted that guild wars is always there to play with no downtime at all. It's going to be strange if guild wars 2 has downtime in it! Not because i plan on playing 24/7, but if i want to play, it's nice not to have to go 'ahh, guess i'll try tomorrow then' :)

I take it for granted too. When I try other MMO's and find that their servers are down or they have very few updates, I realize that Anet is really different from these other companies. Also, I'm sure that GW2 update times and downtimes will be about the same as it was in GW1.
