1) Yes, they add new realms from time-to-time (e.g. http://www.warcraftrealms.com/realmstats.php is a listing of US servers...note the "Online" column for when the particular realm was put online). They will likely add new realms with the launch of Cataclysm due to expected additional players (they did this for BC and Wrath as well)...I don't think it has been announced how many or their names yet.
2) December 7, 2010 is the current launch date for Cataclysm |

The launch of (pre) Cataclysm already began. It's a good period to see the world changes - almost day by day - and the cataclysm unfold. I guess each stage will be awarded by feats of strenghts. So can be achieved only once.

I can only speak for Europe .At present there are a lot of medium and low population servers .Theres a lot of people playing that think Cataclysm is Blizzards last chance to put some challenge back in the game . I can't see Blizzard needing to add new servers even after its release . There will be far less people coming back for this xpac than previous ones as many old players feel that Blizzard has lost all creibility in their eyes . Those that do come back like me may not even buy the xpac and will just stay for a month or so and level up one of the old races to see what the new 1-60 content is like .I'm sad to ssay in its current state the game is past its best and has been dumbed down so much its now boring to all but the most novice gamers . There may be a few challenges at the end game but you have to wade through all the dross to get to it . I very much hope Cataclysm reverses this trend but I'm not holding my breath . If it does'nt deliver this winter then I'm afraid thats it for me with this game and I dont think I'll be alone . If anything in the EU servers will merge . |

for USA, Blizzard launched a new server on release of their last expansion, WOTLK Grizzly Hils http://www.wowwiki.com/Server:Grizzly_Hills_US
and I expect that they will probably launch at least 1 new server for Cataclysm too EQNext press http://EQ3Wire.com EQ2: Freeport server |

WoW doesn't have the population to warrant any more servers. Years ago I remember seeing them open up several at a time, but right now there are so many low pop servers that if anything they'll just do free moves if need be. |

There really isn't a need for new permanent servers so don't expect any. That said I think its a little naive to think old WoW players who've been away for 2+ years won't come back for Cata. The sheer usability, refinement and revamps that have happened since many left in BC is just jaw droppingly awesome. I'm having a blast in 4.0.1 and the last time I logged time in WoW was 07? I think. Would still love a male model remake where they aren't all gorillas but meh. Blizzard makes fun games, if you want accomplishments, theres a place for that... real life. |

Whenever they come out with an expansion, they usually add a few. They deal with low population servers by making free server transfers from packed realms to low realms every once in a while. You'll likely see a lot of this kind of stuff when the expansion comes out since heavy servers are about to get ridiculous.
They added 7 servers when WotLK came out. They'll probably add a few when Cataclysm comes out. SWTOR is the greatest mmo ever! |

Originally posted by colddog04 I'll have to agree here. I'm 99.9% sure they will add 1 or more servers with Cata according to what they have done in the past.
With Cata pretty much being a revamp of the game with lots of additions and changes, I expect alot of people to play the game, if not the biggest draw that Blizzard probably will receive. :)

question 2: does blizzard allow character transfers to newly created realms? Woof! |

Normally when Blizzard adds new server, they won't allow character transfers into it for the first few months. |

Originally posted by OkhamsRazor That is strange, my perception has been the opposite: to me it seems all the information given out about Cataclysm (and it's perception) has been pretty much positive and with even heroics being made more difficult, the new boss mechanics, the improved combat/UI and leveling it seems like a very interesting expansion and if anything, I would expect a lot of old players to give it a try. I too thought WOTLK was a bad expansion (except for it's mechanical fixes to the game, which were great, but they didn't make the content exciting) and even thought I resubbed with each major patch to give the game an another try, I found the combat to still be way too nuke/zerg based especially in PvP and the content to be boring. Now that I've resubbed again and tried 4.0.1 on live, I think the new mechanical changes to the game have been amazing and I am definitely going to give Cataclysm a try, and so are many other players I know. If PvP will indeed be balanced for slower matches and resource conservation at level 85 like it was in TBC and if PvE will be made more than AoE spam again, I think it's going to be great and we'll see even more old players coming back. Only time will tell of course, but at the moment I think it's looking good. |

What about creating a "fresh" 55 DK on a brand new server? That possible? |

Blizz has converted a couple of pvp servers to pve servers. They offered free transfers off before the conversion of course. Even after that there are no low pop pve servers but tons of low pop pvp servers.
I would not be surprised to see a few new pve servers at Cata opening while I would be surprised to see more than a couple of new pvp ones just based on current population balances. |

They do periodically I can vouch for it because I have this disease. I always convince myself that I can start up on a new server get all revved up and about level 20 or so I lose steam and falter and stop. I have a graveyard full of started and stopped alts spread across god only knows how many servers. Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

Originally posted by Boltonsquad Actually, I never addressed whether they will add realms or not at the time of Cata launch. One person responded that Blizzard does not add realms...which they actually do. The last 12 realms were added just prior to and immediately after the launch of Wrath.
In regards to the assertion that they won't, I wouldn't be too certain about that. There were plenty of "Low" population servers in November 2008 as well, but Blizzard added realms in anticipation of increased subscriptions with Wrath. Who knows what their internal analysis says about potential subscription increases with Cata. I do think it is unlikely myself, but Blizzard may be anticipating a much bigger turnout than I am expecting. |
