Final Fantasy XIV game director, Nobuaki Komoto, has penned what would be called a 'state of the game' letter on the official site. In the message, Komoto begins the discussion with news that the dev team plans large-scale updates to the game every three months and that they have indeed been listening to player feedback. To that end, Komoto addresses several key issues: UI adjustments, party based battle balancing, server lag, and distribution of enemies.

Server Lag

Notable lag has been observed in certain areas of the game, particularly when a large number of players are gathered together. To combat this, such areas will be divided into multiple "sections" for the purposes of server-side processing, thereby reducing concentrated loads and subsequent lag on individual World servers.

"The flow of time is cruel...its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it..."

I fear this was caused once again by some greedy investors that pushed a launch before time. This is absolutely shamefull and it's about time that the creative minds behind all this studios stand up and say enough.

"User Interface Adjustments

In response to the generous amount of player feedback we received, a number of changes and new features will be implemented in this area. Many players have voiced dissatisfaction with several facets of the user interface, such as the chat feature and targeting mechanism, and we will be working to remedy these issues as soon as possible."

That's one way of putting it.

Or it was caused by developers designing a terrible game and then telling investors it was going to be a huge hit. It's time for consumers to stand up and say, "enough!" Hopefully game development companies will feel more responsible for sending out trash like this.

At least the results they get are always the same, a big fat fail.

Then people complain about the success of games like wow and how they ruin the market, but that is just ridiculous, WoW gets the results it gets because they deliver what they promise with a decent quality and polish, thats it.

Totally agreed. It's not WoW's fault that game developers (or whoever is forcing release) are releasing piss poor quality.

Pay us, and every 3 months we'll go from 40% of a game and within a year or so be 100% of the game we were meant to be!

If anyone's continuing to pay until they fix this game; I have some bridges for sale.

I think they noticed how many people were talking about not subbing once the free trial ended, I know 100% that I wasn't going to - and out of the 10 people I play with that bought the game only 1 of them was going to keep playing after the free trial. I'll still log in maybe once or twice this week - but the game needs a lot more 'polish' before I'm willing to put a monthly cost on myself for a half-completed project; regardless of if it was an executive decision or development decision to push it out the door.

They delivered everything they promised. What did they specifically promise and then not put in? Name one single thing. they never promised auction houses, they never promised tutorials, they never promised some groundbreaking UI. Matter of fact they specifically said they wouldn't make the UI like WoW just 'cause.

If you were surprised in the slightest degree at the state of this game at release you did shitty research and deserve to be parted from your money while in remorse about it.

PEOPLE hyped up the game to ridiculous levels just because it had 'final fantasy' in the title, and expected nothing short of the pioneer in next gen MMO's when they promised no such thing or even suggested it as a off hand remark.

But that also has a positive side. its one of square enix's flagship games, they can't afford for this game to be bad in the long term. I play because I find its current form fun, not as fun as it could or is going to be in the future, but enough to pay. I'm not sticking around, suffering through with the idea that it will get better.

I know its hard to grasp that people might like something you don't when the thing in question is purely subjective, but it happens ALL the time.

also lol @ another STO. It's already doing better than STO did this far into release by quite a bit.

I think if you take whats happening to mmo's and the internet its self in general, thats why all the games are failing. Thanks to wow's super advertisement that every over looks, they brought in millions of people who aren't gamers. WoW "brings in in results" because its player base is ignorant and think WoW is he original mmo or something.Thats like saying lil wayne is the original rapper. Then you have things like facebook bringing non-computer people online who are ignorant when it comes to computers. So we have companies adjusting for them and making everything lesser quality while communities become crappier and crappier.

WoW didn't ruin games directly, it brought in people with amazing marketing who never play mmos, and just like everyone that plays an MMO for the FIRST time, they were amazed and feel in love with the concept of online gaming, but of course, these are people who know nothing about online games, so they think they are in love with the concept of WoW which is just a generic mmo concept.

With all that said, part of all these recent MMOs sucking is due to many things, crappier communities being one of them, among MMOs being a tired concept that needs to go in a different dirction. WoW doesn't bring anything down, but it doesn't help.

Either way this game is mainly failing because people expected this to be an epic Final Fantasy games, but without its name, its just Generic Fantasy with a big brand name. If this were the exact same game with a different name, everyone wouldn't have high exspectations for it. Square can;t seem to make an online game that lives up to the FF name.

Dionysus I disagree on multiple angles. First, yes, people do create hype for the game, but marketing and development teams have a significant hand in the hype or else there would be nothing to be excited about. Hype isn't all bad for the game by the way or else an MMO would never take off in this day and age.

The thing in question isn't just about people's subjective views and perspectives on a particular game, the real question is whether or not a company's subjective view matches everyone else's or at least most of the people and keeping it close to it. Or else the company would fall apart and fail.

Just because you think is great, doesn't make the game great either and especially since you were the one who brought up subjectivity in the first place. You should understand foremost over the ones you try and scold ;)

It makes sense for them to cater to their subscribers and sure people might have been suckered out of their retail box sales but MMO's are profitted mostly off the residual payments or else the game tanks

If you don't know where you're going you're never lost.

10/16/10 1:50:55 AM#14

It hasn't anything to do with hype, or players being ignorant as they only know WoW, or SE having promised this and that and it's not there.

It's about releasing a game with a playable UI, content other than grind X and grind Y (leves) in between the main storyline, a mailbox system and a market feature that's actually working.

I am not mentioning lag since any MMO freshly out of the door is laggy for the first few months.

Currently FFXIV doesn't even have the basic features making this game a fun adventure.

I think the XIV storyline a good one myself, rather than play through endless and sometimes irritating small quests you have a main plot to follow. Outside of that you have the leves that allow you to progress the character. For a leveling game I would have thought that fine, yes it is different from WoW where there are zillions of little bits of things, but is that a wrong decision for an mmo game to take as a direction...no in my view. Since XIV isn't a WoW clone I think SE can just have a take it or leave it attitude as long as they have a population base that will make them money long-term, it is there game. Where they do need to tighten up on is technical issues. Could they put more content in sure, and they willI think. Console launch may well be the time when they have everything clicking...we will see.

A load of nice promises, but no word about extra quests, other than the boring leves grind. If I wanted to do the same quest over and over again, I'd play Global Agenda...

OMG what bunch of idiots!  Instead of fixing the issue with player vendors by putting an AH in, he is improving the vendors.

nothing was fixed or improved. the zones where the vendors stand were renamed (e.g. from "1st green market ward" to "glovemaker ward" ) . that was the fix. took them 4 weeks after the announcement.
