With a tentative release of 2013, this promising "niche" game will likely be competing with a couple industry juggernauts, notably Blizzard's "secret project" which has been in development for 1.5 years.
Sci-fi games, even from notable publishers, take nose-dives after the first month. I've said it before, will say it again; I was one who liked Tabula Rasa, but I can't play it now. Eve, being the exception, is enough unlike other mmo's to garner its own distinct fanbase...
...which leads to another point. So far this game doesn't show to bring anything "new to the table". In 3 years this game will be in the midst (or toward the end) of the recognized "3rd gen of mmo's", yet the hype from developers places the experience I'm to expect somewhere in the realm between Age of Conan and (sadly, legitimately previously argued) Warhammer.
I still have 40k marines, which I painted myself, in a box somewhere kept as nostalgia. I still have a mostly-intact Space Hulk board game sitting on a shelf. I really enjoyed this genre in its day...
...but I am not optimistic about this. Games Workshop has followed this pattern since the 80s of releasing slightly-reworked content, "with a twist". Yes, it's just my opinion but I'm looking at D&D-->Warhammer, Dragon Magazine-->White Dwarf Magazine, any of a plethora of table top miniature games-->Warhammer fantasy battle/40k, random and sundry "space opera" RPG's-->40k, Heroquest/Dungeonquest/Dungeon!-->Space Hulk. If you were old enough, interested in the genres, you know exactly what I mean.
So what's new here? Why should I be excited about this? What are a couple things THQ and Vigil can "point at" and say, "This. This is the reason you should be excited about our new game."? Because right now, I'm just not seeing it. |

What is new here is the fact that they decided to do like WAR and borrow as much as possible from Wow. That worked so great for WAR that I am really excited about this game (Warning: might contain high levels of sarcasm). A space hulk FPS game that would be something a little bit like Natural selection, that would be something I want. :D |

Considering how little we know about the game, I would say that right now there's no reason to expect anything from this right now. If you're a fan of 40K, then of course you'll be excited. A lot of friends of mine who love this IP can't wait for more info. For the rest of us, we know next to nothing about how the game will actually play. Because we don't know anything, we can't really make snap judgements here. Watch, Listen, Wait, until we have more info. |

Originally posted by Loke666 Well War borrowed nothing from wow so your entire statemetnt there is false. WOW is about pve, War hardly has any its focused on the PVP running the same thing again and again in instanced areas. I have said it before and say it again. In Order ot make soemthing successful, you need large seemeless worlds, strong pve, decent pvp, decent crafting and some mini games here and there. you need this from the start or atleast one month after. Why so that you if you get bored with any part you can focus on another part of the game. Last two big games AOC and Warhammer falled becuase of this as far as I am concerned, AOC just a had a cool fight mechanism and that was it. Warhammer just had pvp which I admit is fun but get bored with quick |

Originally posted by pmaura QFT... Warhammer had a great PVP backdrop but didnt back it up with anything else. Not to mention they were doomed from the beginning becuase Blizzard and WoW used warhammers style to create thier game. So the inevitible "wow clone" arguement came up though it is in fact very untrue.
However, I disagree on one point, you have to have great pve and great pvp. along side of FUN crafting and FUN harvesting. |

To be perfectly honest, this game will have to be amazing to compete with the then released Cataclysm and Biowares Old Republic, Incarna "walking in stations" expansion from EvE and Guild Wars 2. Hell even DC universe online will be a contender due to the PS3. They need to bring thier A game or just not come at all. 2011 + MMO scene is gonna be cutthroat. WTB a sandbox mmo with WoW's polish. |

Originally posted by Avathos I am with you. I may not play it for ever, but I will buy this game upon release. I will play until I have a power armored soace marine, and I will enjoy every minute of being able to play in the 40k universe. The real fans of this IP are excited, for the IP. For any person that even dabbled in the IP (talking to u OP), if you at all enjoyed the table top version and enjoy MMOs, I don't see why you wouldn't be excited. the game looks great graphically so far, and the publisher (and aparently the design studio) has alot of talented people working on the project. THQ did great thingswith the Dawn of War series, they have shown they have a grip on the IP and a good sense for making a quality, polished game. There is nothing I have seen so far to make me think this game won't be up to THQ's high standards of game design, and that is something to be excited about. Taking the WoW comparrison for example. When WoW was released, what was inovative or distinct about it as an MMO? The target circles o wait that came from DAoC... the quest structure? O wait EQ beat them to the punch there? instancing ? nope about 4 games started instancing their dungeons before WoW was even announced... The world design ? O wait ... their WHOLE IP was just a warhammer ripoff to begin with ... so .... NOTHING?.... nothing at all was origional or innovative about the worlds most successful MMO. Just because a game borrows aspects from another game in the same genre does not in my mind mean it will not be a fun game. If you like the IP you like the IP.... I would be worried if Cryptic were designing this game... but THQ ? give them some credit... they are a fine publisher. |

It's Sci Fi not fantasy. It has a weakth of backgroubd so could end up being realy deep. We dont know much about it at the moment so we can't really say if anything will be new/old or whatever. All we can look at at the moment is the IP and specualte on what we think will in the game and what we want. |

I loved the IP of Warhammer Fantasy. WAR came out and had such amazing Potential for players to explore that IP. Instead they gave no reason for people to PVE at all. Even if you wanted to PVE to explore the IP lore, it would be hard to get groups due to the fact 98% of the players were scenario grinding or doing open RVR. If you did manage to PVE to explore the IP lore. you would end up gimping your character in the long run. This might make me sound like a carebear player who doesnt like PVP. Which is entirely untrue. However I do like a mix of both. If 40k goes down even remotely the same route that sucks. Already it looks to be 2 factions in this game which is the suck for 40K.. The IP with that alone loses much of its depth and is not true to the 40k Lore. |

Originally posted by cybertrucker Yeah I am the same way, the lack of PVE and the lack of fun non combat activities in WAR is the vast majority of what killed that game. I am a pvper but WAR made me realize that without solid PVE, pvp will NOT sustain an MMO... period.. I am confident that VIGIL knows this from watching WAR fall short of its potential. |

WAR failed only because it was not Warhammer 40k. Nobody cares about the Warhammer fantasy version. You'd be surprised how many 40k fans there are. Purge, cleanse, kill. That's why we care. |

Well I dont think thats the issue, that nobody cared about fantasy... granted there are more 40k fans, but afterall WAR did sell over 1 million units but was unable to reain the subscriptions. What it boiled down to was some poor key design desicions: over reliance on insatnces, unfinished gameplay, lack of fun PVE, horrible almost non existant non-combat activities... etc etc |

It is a great IP, so far I have seen little to encourage me it will be a great MMO. Time will tell. |
