"Quiz time! <dances>" - Pran

10/01/10 2:39:16 AM#1

As you can see in the title, do you like MMORPGs with someone or something following you around or helping you in battles?

Many games have this feature. Usually called a pet, but in some specific games called Anima or Pran.

For me, I personally like it since even if you're not in a party, there's still someone who accompanies you. It adds a little more something to the experience. I like the Pran of Aika, for example. They are not only cute, but they are also useful because of the abilities they cast. And I like how your Pran requests for chat. Unlike pets that just follow you or attack with you, at least Prans ask for a little interaction. Something that other games are now trying to do with their pet/loli system.

Hopefully other games will also include some sort of this system since that interaction is a bit unique as of the moment. And good job for that, Aika!

Played: Runescape, Adventure Quest
Currently playing: Aika Global, Atlantica Online
Waiting for: Cardmon Hero, Dynasty Warriors Online

As long as the thing following you is not distracting or ruining your gaming experience.

And if more games do it, then it becomes no longer unique, but just another boring everyday "feature".

Be glad that there are games that do things other games do not, otherwise, all the games would be even more similar than they already are, and then what would be the point of playing a different game?

Yeah i liked the pran system to. it was interesting and fun to interact with. Bioware is trying to do something similar called companions in the old repbulic, basically as they have it, your companion will interact in the conversations you have with other people. Whether they can be manipulated as the prans do or ask for your attention is as of yet unknown to me. But might be something to watch out for in the future.

As for your question. If they consistently got in the way or were silent as most pets are then no i wouldn't want them following me. But if they are similar to the pran. Help you out in fights and talk to you occasionally then yeah i wouldn't mind at all. In fact it's the only feature in Aika that really kept me there. Everything else i had already seen in dozen of other MMos

Help me Bioware, your my only hope.

Have questions, concerns, want info about The Old republic

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

If there is nothing else in the game to make it enjoyable, a talking pet should help.  Then again, I could just watch a movie, lots of talking there.

I have played too many games, but, I did enjoy humorous spoken comments now and then.  Was it the dwarf class in Warhammer Online that made funny comments?

One game that had pets that could "talk", not through sound, just on-screen text, is Guild Wars.  Bring-along NPCs do this often, even heros.

Does it make the game more fun for me?  On a scale from 1 to 100 for the entire game, I would say onscreen chat from NPCs can yield an extra one half point.  Dwarf types speaking in sound, as found in Warhammer Online can add a couple of points.  And, the guy from Duke Nukem' could add 10 or more points, but he was not a pet.

For me voice is much more fun in games if I am talking to or listening to a live player.

For me personally the rarity of something doesn't really factor into whether I like it or not, every single game on the market has combat does that make combat less fun?

I'd just rather play a game that implements the features best.  as far as pet charactersI like the idea and have almost always played atleast one class from any mmo that has a companion character as another poster stated my only problems is when the pet intereferes with regular gameplay like some games tend to do.  I remember that SWG pets had some pretty bad pathing issues, if I remember right they would pop up in WOW from time to time as well.  Overall though I think it's a decent option to have and hope that the games released do expand on the idea.

I think prans are creepy little lolipets, and I don't want anything following me around on a regular basis just to chat, or even as mere support.  If I can't send a pet to do my killing for me, it's not much of a pet.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

"Beware the Gold Farmers, My Son, and Shun the Thrunderous Bandersnatch."

10/02/10 4:55:32 PM#11

Hi All,

Two Comments:

(1) MMORPGs are, of course, the da Bee's Knees.

(2) MMOs is one issue, obviously.   However:

(a) There is a dichotomy between "playing the Game and common online MMO social courtesy; and,

(b) Has anyone just asked this person, in a descent kind of way, "Is there something I can help you with?." Most likely a skatoliical response may happen but if not --working with them -- IN A SOCIAL APPROACH!

Don't expect great artwork from a coder. It just doesn't happen.

The pets in Zentia are chatty.  At least my cat was.  He's great fun.

I intend to live forever -- So far so good!

Only if I can butcher it mercilessly in cold blood and make it go away forever.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

It depends on its personality. The pet system in Aika Online was unique and fun. The Pran are great companions and provide interesting commentary on the world. Not only that, but they evolve based on how you treat them, and grow from children to adults.

I still laugh when my Pran told me she prefers the Wii over the Playstation 3.

Interesting quote, don't believe it at all, but still made me think about people.

I generally like something following me around in games, but honestly I don't want them to talk unless I could create what they say. I'd prefer an animal over a human thing, oddly I hate most animals in real life, would never get a pet other than a fish.

The familiar or little corporeal anima/us companion has a lot going for it and it's no surprise game designers have picked up on the popularity of these things such as charging them in in-game shops. The other side to this, having a team of NPC's henchmen/companions such as GW and Bioware games is also fun especially if they have some funny quips and decent teamwork.

Personally, I like the puppet-master approach to pets/minions the most in mmo combat, it's heaps of fun even if it is not always the best AI. It's still can be strategic and you grow attached to your little helper(s).
