If there's map travel in WvW then we loose a lot of strategy ("The cavalry is just over that hill! Fast Travelling is just for PvE

In WvWvW you walk by foot.

 

But the WvWvW area is as big as a region( take the dragonbrand area in demos for example) divided by territories with villages/roads/keeps etc.. so you will have action very frequently even if by foot.

Well I hope so.. It's a delicate balance really. How fast is too fast?

IMO it 's all depending on how much attention Anet gives to WvW zone design and since I've heard that it's going to be quite big (several PvE zones equivalent - or one region comprised of several zones, one for each server and one in the center at least) well IMO there should be "some" map travel.. but much more widely spaced than in PvE main game. We'll see. Really it's all down to details here and I hope Anet gives enough attention to this because PvP zone design really is such a delicate matter and a few seconds travel time might cause a total server imbalance (early AB in WoW, remember?) or spell a difference between an exciting fight or an obvious outcome snooze-fest.

GW2 will have "waypoints". Not sure how it works, but I'm sure it will be used as blood-port to ease traveling.

If you can instantly teleport to where you want to go, then why do you need a mount?  So that people can laugh at you for being so slow on your mount?  So that you can have something useless to show off?  To try to run past mobs and skip content even the first time, which is something ArenaNet has tried to crack down on in Guild Wars?

If you're thinking, travel on foot is slow, so there should be mounts to go faster, then you're thinking of the wrong game.  It works like that in a lot of games, but that's because games are such games are missing ways to travel quickly.  Mounts would make about as much sense here as they would in Tetris.

I recall this same discussion before Aion came out...and one of the main selling points of that game was that all players had wings lol.

All MMOs should have melee weapons, period.  Maybe I'll try EVE when they add melee weapons.

You're funny. You can travel your long distances with waypoints once you've unlocked them, if that's not enough for you then well .... yea...

If we had instant travel in the real world...would you still want a car?   I would.

 

The traveling experience in RL is different...whether by plane, rail, car, bicycle, skateboard, etc.

 

The question of mounts is the same.  Your perspective of the game changes depending on your mode of travel.  

 

Isn't it in the best interest of the game to show us different aspects of the game? Yes.

Travel will be done alot like Diablo 2, there will be waypoints but in order to use the waypoints you have to travel to that location first and then you can fast travel/teleport there every other time afterwards.

Back to the question i dont think they will have mounts cause they have waypoints and those Asura gates that are like mage portals from wow or jumpates from EVE, maybe like a  Stargate now i think about it.

The only way I'd like to see mounts in a game is if they add more gameplay elements than just a speed buff.

I'd just like to say that a in a siege pvp environment, a trebuchet would be a lot more exciting than a mount :p.

 Would you mind letting me add to it?...With your axe swinging on your right hand you pass by on the left of an enemy chopping his head while not decelerating. I believe that would be awesome

Mounts would be awesome! I'd rather have that than the map travel.. or both could work in unison. Pets in GW1 could be transfered via Hall of Monuments and potentially turned into mounts. Humans and Sylvari could ride Charr or Norn in beast form. Another way interact with others and another reason to have Charr/Norn in your party. All while the Asura have their golems to ride inside of. Ha.

Something tells me the charr and norn wouldn't take too kindly to that idea.  A human trying to ride a charr in particular would probably lose a few vital organs before dismounting (or being thrown rather) lol.

So I wouldn't write off the possibility of mounts just yet.

Jeff Grubb: Map travel? We have been looking at that, tried a couple things. One result of having all the different races is the Asura now have gates all over the place. We have points within the map for movement, but mounts… I’m going to have to cop out and say, “Under discussion.”

This is actually the closest information about it by anyone from ANET. It is pretty old so you'll never know but I translated it as "something we will add later, probably to the first expansion". But that is a guess of course, it is possible but rather unlikely that they have them in at launch.

We havn't seen any pictures of anyone on a mount either so I believe it is unlikely. Of course if you are optimistic so go ahead. 
The mechanics for mounts themselves are in the game, it was included in the canceled campaign for GW that eventually became GW2.

I think this is one of those issues that some times people get caught up on that proabably wont really matter GW1 didnt need mounts travel was simple easy and didnt waste time. If they decide to add mounts thats great but if they dont thats great too cause it probably wont really matter.
