So yeah I was, like, at Krispy Kreme yesterday buying a dozen of their glazed donuts. The manager stopped by the cash register with a bag and said, "Hey, I noticed you're buying a dozen glazed. Good choice, that's what we're famous for. Let me throw in a couple with sprinkles, just to spice it up."

Sprinkles? I came here for glazed. I hate sprinkles. So I gave him what he had coming... "Sprinkles? You've got to be @%&*ing kidding me! Sprinkles, you dip$hit? What do I look like, a six year old???" I shoved the box and bag off the counter, donuts spilling in every direction, and stormed out the door with a final flip of the bird.

I'll never go back. True story.

Not to sound like a troll, but what does that even mean? You don't think most (if not all) of the assets required for the "space game" would already be necessary for the "ground game"? I know I'd certainly expect to see space ships in a Star Wars game, even if I wasn't able to fly them. Really, all you're talking about is mashing 'em together into a rail-shooter. Honestly, I'd be quite surprised if that took even a fraction of the budget they've already spent on the Blur cinematic videos.

Truly damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Choosing to be an MMO dev these days has to be some kind of masochism.

And atleast this looks like fun

 EXACTLY!

A full fledged flight sim in an mmo is imo asking a lot, its a whole other game in and of it self. Maybe as a small xpac or something would be cool. But for first release/launch at least they have it in game and it looks fun.

Although it would be cool if they added options to customize your ships weapons/defenses/accesories etc. :).

One of the biggest and most interesting parts of star wars

How the hell do you justify that assessment? The largest (in terms of screen time) space battle in the films was the orbital front of the Battle of Yavin, and it had maybe 15 minutes of screen time. When it comes to games, space combat for the Star Wars franchise has remained just as much a cute little physics-challenged sideshow through obstacle courses as it was in the films, aside from the brief stint of the old X-Wing and TIE Fighter games.

Not saying that I can't imagine a Star Wars game having better space combat, but rather that Star Wars itself doesn't do anything to justify such an expectation.

That's why I balk at people saying, 'How can you not focus on space combat in a Star Wars game?' My response is, 'Because it's a damned Star Wars game.'

QFT

I've been reading these comments and every time someone says something like "they're taking the stars out of Star Wars" I can't help but wonder what movies they were watching, because in the actual Star Wars movies, space battles were a small part of any of the films. Yes, they were at times pivotal parts, but the amount of time in any of the movies dedicated to space battles was rather small. Far more time was spent either on planet surfaces or the interior of a ship.

So how do folks come to SWTOR with the idea that it should have wide-open, sandbox space exploration and combat when, if Bioware wants to keep things inline with the movies the game is based on, they'll keep space combat to a minimum?

In any case, I'm fine with what they've implemented in regards to space combat. It's icing on the cake. This game was never hyped by Bioware as a space shooter. It has been hyped as an mmo with deep storylines and an immense amount of content. SWTOR is expected to be the largest single work of fiction in the world upon release, based on word count. They never promised space exploration and really are, for now at least, throwing folks a bone by including this space combat mini-game. If deep, free roaming space combat and exploration is what you want from the mmo you play, look elsewhere, at least for now. Whose to say what may happen a year from now through a major expansion?

if this was a WiiWare $5.00 download id say nice game.

but in reality this is your space content for an upcoming Star Wars MMORPG.  that is a hard fail.

and ppl are gonna eat it up.  mmorpgs are in a shaky state these days imo.

You lost me at "yesterday buying"

But really, studies show™ that less than 20% of the Star Wars movies takes place in space combat. Almost all of it is either on the ground, on an asteroid, or inside of a ship. The same is true even for the animated series. So you could say it was smart for Bioware to focus on that, why would space ever be their focus? But yet they still put out a polished 3d space rails shooter that looks like fun and will be a part of the story.

The only people that are royally pissed off are the ones that wanted this mmo to be a Star Wars universe simulator.

As far as the total game is concerned, I don't think that a majority of people planning to play TOR at this point will mind the space system as is.  Hardcore Star Wars space fans will likely stick to SWG, which really does have a decent space experience, despite what many would say about the rest of the game.

I don't see TOR bringing in very many "hardcore" MMO players anyway.  There really isn't anything that's been shown so far that is so innovative or groundbreaking (other than story, possibly) that it would appeal to that crowd.  I think that for the typical SW:TOR player, the space system will will suit them as well as any other aspect of the game.

I would add though, that this system is very similar to what I've seen of The Clone Wars MMO space system.  The Clone Wars game is directed toward a children to young teen audience.

Also, as I have stated my fears that this could be a problem before, the outfits for this game shown so far are HORRIBLE!  I sincerely hope that somewhere along the line in this game that there is the much, much larger selection of clothing that was promised for players to customize their own characters with. I hope there's at least options besides jedi pajama robes, sith satanic-cult alter boy outfits, and armor that just looks like antique versions of clone war trooper and BH armors.  Should you choose to play this game, pray that you do not get stuck at any point wearing those ridiculous shoulders the NPC has in the video.   LOL

An MMO (or anygame for that matter) does not have to be ground breaking to be a great/good game. Everyone thinks the next GAME needs to be GROUND BREAKING, come on get real, quit being so damn picky about crap. Eiter you buy it and dont like it,dont like it so you dont buy it,or you buy it and like it. and like a some posters have said, there are plenty of flight sim Star Wars flavored Video games out there. This is more of a "Im -insert reason here-, the Space combat looks simple and fun, think ill go try it/play fer a bit. Although the one thing I think they should have done was made it multiplayer,as this is an M M O.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to post. This space combat plays exactly like Rebel Assault and if that's the case, I can easily say with 100% certainty it is not worth playing. Thanks but no thanks Bioware.

Chaos. Panic. Disorder. My work here is done.

As a genuine question; how much time of the six Star Wars movies is devoted to space combat sequences again in comparison to the rest of the films?

Future: GW2/DF Relaunch/WoD
Present: MOBAS/FPS
Past: UO (pre Trammel)/Darkfall/EVE/FPS/Lots of crap.

Welcome to the internet.

This just in...people love to hate stuff!

I still can't wait for ToR.  I still have faith in Bioware.

I was only expecting an online version of KOTOR, honestly.  The space combat is just an added bonus in my eyes.

I'm much more worried about the actual game gameplay I've seen so far.  Animations, graphics, voice acting, armor design all looks horrible in my opinion.

With all those problems I couldn't care less about the space combat, as I wasn't expecting any in the first place.

Rail shooter, LOL.  Bioware should be ashamed and embarrassed promoting archaic gameplay.

I expect Blizzard to throw a rail shooter into Cataclysm just to laugh at them.

Nah, Blizz is going to do better.  You'll have your hands full farming T11 so you can farm T12 so you can farm T13 so you can farm T14 so you can farm T15 and so on. Exhilarating and groundbreaking gameplay, yes? Hell, maybe they'll raise the raid buff from 30% to 50%  for the complete handicapped ones.  So thar every ape can round around with his fancy latest tier gear.
