I agree that a space sim doesn't have massive appeal, but I do think they'll eventually explore that area. What I'm thinking, this is nothing more than early flashy entertainment, space combat on launch including your own personal ship which acts as your home should keep people happy, for awhile.  It can't stay like this forever and be our only space combat styled entertainment, eventually it would become dull. So I think they will expand, I can't say for sure, I'm not a psyhic nor do I work for BioWare, I just don't see this being the only option. Plus space needs PvP.
Other then that, the video looked nice, it was visually beautiful and looked like a lot of fun.

Of course they will tweak it, that should be standard for a MMO. I just don't think you will ever see a second coming of EVE/JTL or whatever people are calling for in this forum.

I'm not talking just tweaks, I'm talking new forms. I don't think you will see EVE type gameplay either, far to slow. Something a bit more twitch and free roaming I can see, just on a smaller scale then SWG. I don't think it will be anytime soon.

As I see it, BioWare isn't putting all their eggs in one basket. Lets see how well the game does before we think this is the only form space combat will take.

As I Said in the other thread, the combat, shooting, graphics look great.  Just not the whole follow the yellow brick road part.

If they can change this down the line(heh) to free flying, I think it will be pretty epicly awesome.  Until then, I just can't get excited about a rail shooter.

Does everything have to be complex to be a good game? I don't understand what you're trying to say. It's dumbed down, from what exactly? What is complexity in terms of MMO gaming, because the design is simple the entire game is is damned to being nothing more then dumbed down?
And by holding hands you mean following a story they've laid out for you, sure the game will hold your hand. Oh well, it looks fun, I would know I follow games that look fun, I don't have this odd urge to follow games that don't. Hows that work exactly, you seem to be pro at it.

 Oh go back to your HC sandbox play with imaginary legos. Whole space thing is fine since it fits greatly with lore. Was Star Wars about space cadets flying around in real physics, NO! Most of stuff in movies happen in ground or inside. And it had WW2 style dogfight space combat with no real physic. Or maybe I missed episode 69 where Luke and Han cargo shittrilium around galaxy while avoiding Darth Tollman, this isn't Space Truckers Online where all you do is cargo some shit around galaxy. Having huge amount ground places and huge amount space, I guess sandbox people love that because they aren't used to people hanging around in large numbers. Reality check, how long does it take to fly from one end of galaxy to another, too f-ing long.

Overall space combat in TOR seems to be nice minigames which whole point is to get rid boring "kill x in place y" type quests, but ofc none of this matters to HC sandboxers. TOR will be good game if they stick on current path and avoid all SWG whiners, because SWG failed for reason; it sucked in the end.

 I don't see the issue even if it is on rails. Would freedom be nice to have? Sure but this is Star Wars did they even go wandering around the galaxy. Granted it has been a few years since I watched any of the movies but I can't remember ships  being used as transport from A to B or for space battles.

That aside, despite my generally dislike of BioWare's direction with this game, I have to admit that graphically this looks good and even if it's just a rail shooter at launch, it gives me hope that it can and will be expanded to being something more in the future.   I'd really like to know what you can do in your ship other than just shoot stuff.

Yes, but how often did they show just an average transportation scene with no meaning or  interesting situations?  Transporting Luke and Obi-Wan lead to the discovery of Alderaans destruction, as well as the encounter with the Deathstar. This was also a good moment for the audience to get to know Han and Chewie, which is done in many BioWare games. Adding something pointless like take cargo from point A to point B, then return to point A for reward is boring. Leave it out I say, it's not needed. It's as bad as people wanting to role play a moisture farmer, reality must be pretty boring.

Your ship is your player home. What that entails I'm not quite sure, most likely similar to ME and KOTOR.

Really do get a lil bit tired of all the haters of this game. Alot of you folks never had any intention on playing it to begin with, just decided long ago when they announced a new Star Wars MMO that you didn't like it. I know that this site is the home site of the swg pre cu people and swg people in general. So I can imagine that is why you see alot of the anti swtor banter on these forums. But I am really tired of hearing. 

Game does not even need space combat to be an MMO, and if you called it a singleplayer... well that is just silly since other games have singleplayer elements to them aswell.

They only said that you can play the game alone if you want or you can quest with people if you want. Not that you HAVE to play it single player. GW2 said their game is also solable, so why not all the hate on that side?  Why does it all come over here?

These devs are trying damn hard to bring an epic star wars experience to star wars MMO fans and they are constantly getting shit on for every little detail, while other games keep on getting the free pass.   It's a shame, really it is. I hope that there are consequences for all this hate and whining... My take is, in the future big gaming companies like EA and Blizzard or whoever will just up and decide that it is no longer profitable to bring to you an expensively made game, and just give you a f2p craptastic MT game or browser game..> Then you will really be crying.

you are assuming they will not be smuggling at all? one would assume that in that class's story arc, there will be some smuggling involved.

what is more stupid, pretending you are smuggling something and just pointlessly going from point A to point B or actually doing it within an actual story?

the only real difference is you don't manually fly there in a persistent galaxy and instead you get this space combat along the way.

I was there for the talk before the launch of SWG and luckily got to usher in that title through launch up until the CU/NGE and for quite sometime all we had to remind us of the role that space combat played were the sounds from the shuttleport so again I'm glad to see what they are doing to start.  Suddenly I've noticed lot's of posters forgetting how bad the execution of JTL is, the movement and environment and such aren't bad but the missions were as lifeless as they come so my hope is that if someday we get a full on space combat expansion this will be a good place to build from having the component in there from start.

for an MMO, both are stupid actually.  i neither want to be "pretending" i'm smuggling, nor do i want my entire smuggling skill to consist of 3 dialogue options available once during the couse of a 5-year game.

what makes sense is proper smuggling gameplay that involves player skills to accomplish  - i.e. choices of cargo, choices of route, choice of ship, choices smuggling hold, ability to outthink / outrun / outmaneouver / outfight customs officials or pirates, etc.

looks good for a rail space shooter, but i doubt they can implement space pvp with that model

ground combat pvp yes, space pvp nope

anyway if one is looking for pvp in space, should go play EVE online for that instead

honestly, if everyone that wants good space combat goes to eve and everyone that wants a star wars experience goes to swg and everyone that wants a game with glowing swords and magic goes to WoW and everyone that wants a good bioware game goes to ME2, we won't have a whole lot of people left to have these discussions.

for better or worse, SWTOR is what we've got.  most of us who don't like it's direction will still play it.  i think most of us are also pretty sure we'll have SOME fun doing it.   i don't see any reason to curtail discussion of how it can be better or what parts of it will be disappointing.

I think the point he was trying to make is,  if you are looking for space combat,  perhaps you should look at a game that is dedicated to providing a space combat experience.  Not just EvE,  it could be any game that specifically stated that they are looking to bring a strong, competitive space combat experience to online gamers.  That was not BioWares original plan,  but that doesn't mean they won't provide that at a later time,  but SO far,  it hasn't been stated that this will be a game directed towards space combat.

The point i was trying to make is that what people are looking for is a game dedicated to providing a Star Wars experience in a MMORPG model.    And unfortunately, there are only 3 choices at the moment - one of them is almost dead, the other one is a children's game and the third one is SWTOR.    If there was a competing Star Wars game being developed with a direction more representative of a Star Wars experience, I'd definitely be following that.  But there isn't.  So we've gotta make the best of it.
