To me this game reminds me alot of the middle years of Vanguard. Its got that "Old School with a new face" vibe to it. Plus this is around the time we were given a slew of information on the game, and the community was really starting to build to a peak.

Already though  there is a couple huge one up's on VG:

1. The game isnt focusing on a giant world that is beyond their capabilities.

2. The game is already showing signs of polish and improvement on the core game.

I cant stress enough how important these things are. To me the tragedy of VG was that they bit off more than they could chew. They were given the funds, but the tech and time just wasnt available to them. To me RIFT seems like VG on a smart budget with a confident/competent group of lead devs.

The other reason im getting pumped up on nostalgia is the Lore-Heavy atmospehere they are presenting the game with. To me a great game always starts with great lore, to me its the feeling im sure all of us have had at one point; where youre sitting around late at night with your friends making up some crazy fantasy world and populating it with all these different childish intricacies.

Like sheilds only being used by the eliete guards of the temple and theifs only using a knife and a pick because that seems like the norm. Also dont take the word childish as a negative here, I mean it in only a positive light. I think alot of imagination is what you need, but honing that imagination and forming it is the most important aspect, which I believe the developers are doing with RIFT.

I admit the game is intriguing, but the only way it gives me that "nostalgic Vanguard-esque" feeling, is the deep seated fear it will all end in tears, just like every other in production MMO I'm watching.

God no.  Vanguard looked like a moronic disaster from the start led by an complete idiot with clearly outdated ideas.  Almost anyone that wasn't enamoured by nostalgic fondness for EQ1 was able to see right through all the BS and constant mind-changing of "oh it's a hardcore game", no "it's a game with something for everyone", no, now "it's a different and unique experience" etc etc.

The fact that it actually ended up as a semi-playable an decently fun game is a testament to some of the talented people behind the massive failboat that was Brad McQuaid.

Rift feels nothing like Vanguard.  Rift feels like it knows what it wants to be, where it wants to go and what it's main features are.  It's not - from what i've seen - trying to be the end-all of video-gaming.  While I hate to say it, it's more akin to WoW in that way - they're taking solid parts of existing games and tweaking them in their own direction.  Unlike WoW, they are actuall doing something new, which is nice to see (though dynamic content isn't entirely new, it's less used than other concepts).

If anything (and probably due to the same developers), I see Rift as a spiritual successor to EQ2.   Many of the folks I play EQ2 with are very excited about it.  (And about it not being made by SOE).

Rift world and graphic look like Vanguards, that is what i saw when i first noticed Rift. I guess they got influences from Vanguard actually.

Vanguard in better graphic would be so awesome.

Thats what i was thinking also it has more of an EQ2 feeling to it. ( And about it not being made be SOE i have to agree)

There is a lot about the graphics and game descriptions that remind me a lot more of eq2 then vanguard.

But there isn't a lot of real detail on the game yet so it's hard to make any judgments.

I agree with it looking very similar to EQ2 (And a little WoW mixed in if you ask me), but really i wasnt looking for a "Gameplay debate" as much as I was trying to start a discussion about everyones personal first reactions to seeing the game.

For me when i saw the Dwarf update today and then looked at the site, I looked through all the lore, some screens, etc. And I was given that same feeling as I got when I first started following Vanguard. I signed up on the forums and am now trying to be active in the community. To me it just seems like the first game in a while that isnt trying to be something its not, but has passion and direction.

Vanguard had the passion, no matter how much a person hates Brad Mcquaid, the guy is into his work. He just doesnt know how to work a business is all.

A lot of times I can see an MMO and get a general vibe from another title, maybe with similar atmosphere or whathave you, but to be totally honest, from what I've seen and read of Rift, it looks like Rift to me. And that's a good thing. Unique is good.

right, my point was that vanguard was the exact opposite of that.   vanguard forums were a total cesspool of hate and misinformation and no one including the developers had any idea where it was going.  i get a very cohesive and reliable vibe from Rift.

You all missed one, sure it has similarities to VG and EQ2, also warhammer (albeit a darker version).

The game mechanics are similar to the version of warhammer that was cancelled before mythic took up the title (ie the dynamics of monsters spawning and taking an area over if left unchecked).

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

lol I would guess you was a DF fan by your avatar? If so, I am surpised you are so harsh on VG ;)

That aside, Rift has a evolved classic old school vibe, especially because many of us recognise some of the dev team, and I guess VG did as well, but it has none of the shakyness of that game either communication wise, design wise, or funding wise.

As long as Brad McQuaid isn't making decisions hyped up on crack, we're golden.

What is your avatar from?  I remember reading a webcomic with a character like that in it and I loved it, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called...  It was making fun of MMO's and the main character was a low-level n00b...  Ahhh, good times.  :)

getting pretty good vibe from this game but wouldn't say they were vanguard-esque

only feelings i remember from vanguard were disappointment and sadness - and this was well before launch when brad would repeatedly get on the forums and explain why this and this and this and this was not going to be in the game

I'm liking a few of the things I've seen so far about the game.

I'd have prefered not to have to choose a Base Class, and it be a free form choose your skill set style system with classes until the later levels where your really falling into a niche as most everyone eventually does.

As for the comic that guys avatar comes from "The noob  "

One of these days some game company will come knocking on my door, and ask me how i want a game designed. Until then I'll gripe about other peoples designs.

To be honest i have gotten a Vanguard feel from this game including the original hype i just hope it doesnt turn out the same way in the end tired of game hate or crappy games just want a good mmo like the old days that made you feel like you were in a niche and not all this casual gamer wow bs.
