Those of us used to the way FFXI played will be familiar. I particularly like the rpg feeling of this.

I really like the combat, really fun in a group too :)

Targeting is a bit of a pain right now but they are adding some bindings to fix this.

Thanks for making this thread.  I agree, it looks like there's some good potential in this combat system - especially later on with the sheer level of customization that'll be possible.  Should be fun making unique builds.

P.S. All hands brace for troll impact...

I can't tell if your being sarcastic or not, but anyways in my opinion its still quite slow. But the problem isn't that it's slow, its the fact that it isn't very engaging...its just pressing a button till you have enough points to use a skill, use it, rinse and repeat which bundles with the slow combat kills fun for me. But keep in mind we are still playing/seeing low lvl characters at this moment with not much in terms of skills, so who knows it might change later.

Im so happy they lifted NDA.

I can talk about this based on my experiences so far on the game. I played a gladi, and it was just so much fun. I have played so many mmos and i was waiting for this.Is definetly more than just press couple of keys and wait for cool down.

The way the shield works is amazing. You have to activate it, while active  you can use several types of skills( it goes down when your shield arm gets "tired" so you have to rise it again), and others after a succesfull block, around lv 15-20ish. you already have a lot of skills to play with.Beating 3 mobs at once as gladi trying to face them all so my shield could block all the time so i could do phalanx( that can only be done after a block) in rotation with the aoe atack, its definetly fun, at least for me it was.The way the shield works is a big win for me in particular.I didnt play the rest of classes past lv 6 so i cant really coment the rest.

Agreed.  I love that the shield actually has a use instead of just being a cosmetic armour buff.  My need for downtime between fights was greatly reduced (sometimes nonexistant) when taking zero damage from successful blocks.

It was announced yesterday - and I believe it was only partially lifted.  I've heard you still can't post videos on most websites, but you can post screenshots and share beta experiences with others.

I like FFXI, played it for quite a while... but I have to say I was hugely dissapointed with the combat in FFXIV, it does not feel intuitive and was far too slow and... well, boring.  Its a shame because I was really looking forward to this game but now I suspect this just wont be for me.

I cant wait until I either get to try it myself in beta or when CE people gets to start playing, combat looks fun to me and even has somewhat of a FF feel to it... that is from what I've seen, like I said, cant wait until I get to try it myself. ^^

Combat isnt any slower here than it is in any other MMO on the market.

Pushing a button over and over again till you can use a skill... sounds a lot like just about every other MMO on the market

This video is still early in the game and while it may not be "lightning fast" it is by no means slow and in no way encompasses all that the game will have to offer for players.

I think that the part which makes it look slow and unresponsive is when they all run up to the mob, stop, unsheathe their weapons and then attack. The combat itself is fine at this point but the part before the combat is what makes it slow.

Also, should I expect to kill farm animals, birds and some jellyfish looking things for most of the game?

The game, as it also did in XI, works off a "conbat" or "not combat" status. They simply didnt engage the creature and go to combat mode earlier. Most likely because the creature wasn't agressive. Having played both I would say its just a feature of the mechanic and something that will make more sense when you use the mechanic. It's different when the creature is agressive and will require a fight.

No, don't expect to kill farm animals the whole time. However you did admittedly do it some in XI.

You run faster with your weapon sheathed, on your back, or at your hip, depending on your class, and you also regen HP at the same time, although a little faster when you stand still.  With your weapon out however, you run about 30% slower and don't have the regen effect.

It is actually really nice having the ability to put your weapon{s} away for additional buffs while moving on, cause this feature was not in FFXI, and there is a bit of tacticality blending with it as well.  Like ~ do I want to sheath my weapon and regen some HP while running a little faster to my next mob, or leave my weapon out, moving a little slower and hope I get my HP ability or cure off in time in case the next mob poses a bit more challenging than the last.  There are lots more thinking and strategizing involved than just running around button mashing and AoE spamming.  {I personally have died many times attempting to take on another mob without regening some HP before hand, depending of course on what I last fought, the next mob and the condition my HP was in...}  Sometimes I've had an enemy dol out an incredible amount of critical damage I wasn't expecting.

If ya wanna see some nice tactical combat at play, check out this Thaumaturge video by Rocs Lock, using slow and poison to keep the mob at a distance and whittle its life away.  And while he didn't use it in this video, I can imagine this tactic working great while taking advantage of using the various levels of terrain, forcing the mob to path longer to get to you.  I can see this tactic used often with certain NMs, as it was heavily in XI, especially when attempting to solo them.

Having played Monk quite a bit in FFXI as my main, and coming to FFXIV to start as a Pugilist... I can attest personally, the combat is *far* faster if you want it to be.

I say if you want it to be because of how much flexibility the stamina bar gives you. I don't know if it'll refill as fast in retail, but right now, I'm able to attack pretty much back to back with only the occasional pause if I happen to bring the stamina lower than the required amount for my attacks.  I typically will go into Active mode a little ways before I get to the enemy to give my Stam bar time to fill up a bit, so I'm not starting almost from scratch when the fight begins and can open up with a nice combo of hits/skills.

Otherwise, I've been consistently amazed at how fast the combat speed is for a H2H class that has a high delay (unbuffed) between attacks in XI.

Now... if it's the time it takes for the mob to die, well that's different... but I'm still fine with it. Mobs of equal or higher level dropping in seconds leaves no time or room to develop strategies (particularly in groups) and renders the whole idea of party tactics moot. I likd that FFXI had longer fights.. when fighting things that had a chance to defeat you, it kept a sense of tension going through most of the fight and kept it from becoming "ho-hum". Even mobs that you knew how to kill fairly easily could get an upper-hand with a lucky hit, or if you missed, etc.

And while it seems slow to watch it as an outsider, when you are the one in the driver's seat, particularly in later fights, every moment's delay between attacks is welcome - especially when fighting something you know can wipe your group if they get a shot in before you do.

I'm glad they're keepin it that way, at least for the most part, in FFXIV, and battle won't be another variation on "smack, smack, kill... next... smack, smak, kill... next...", or "Nuke... kill... next... Nuke... kill... next"... *That* gets boring to me.

Don't blame your genetic burden, lack of impulse control and socialeconomic shortcomings on a mmorpg.
