Whens the last time you played an mmo without dieing? i doubt you will ever see a real mmo with perma death, no one will pay a monthly sub if they have to constantly start over with nothing

diablo hardcore mode doesnt really qualify as an mmo, its an online rpg, sure, but "massive"? not really

I think he was just making a game mechanic comparison not calling Diablo an MMO. And no, I haven't heard of one.

Played in some form:
UO til tram, AC, EQ, AO, WW2O, PS, SB, CoH, AC2, Hor, LoTRO, DDO, AoC, Aion, CO, STO
Playing: WoW (for gf), WAR
Waiting For: SWTOR, FFXVI
Hoping For: DCUO, Secret World, Earthrise
-S- (UO Sonoma)

sure, but its a game mechanic that is not likely to show up in an mmo

small scale games can get away with mechanics like that, especially if they have optional modes

the truth is a simple one, "permadeath" can exist in EVERY game of EVERY type, and the only thing that stops it from existing is player honesty.

Want your MMO to have permadeath? simply delete your character EVERY time you die

Now if your not alredy doing this, than lets be truly honest: you dont want perma death for yourself, you just want to be able to piss off other players

The trouble with that in a subscription based game? pissed off players quit and dont come back, so its not a profitable business model for a game to use where they allow you to grief other people with outrageous death penalties

So yea, you want permadeath? your free to have it in every game you ever play, for yourself, just delete your characters upon death; but youll most likely never be allowed to enforce that on someone else in any game with a subscription

Bah, Google the name Alba?  LOL, say hello to Jessica.  Fortunately the Developer helps bring up the correct site and the game looks sort of like yet another virtual world from an Indie Dev a la UO.  They even have eating and its seriously impacts how healthy you are throughout your life in ALBA

But as to the matter of permadeath, yep, they do have it, here's what I found at the site.

"Your character's life in ALBA may be fleeting and unlike many games you cannot "resurrect" or be reborn once you die, however your heir can take on some of your traits and inherit all of your wealth. When a character dies, regardless of the cause, all assets will be transferred to their nominated heir."

http://www.badunclegames.com/index.php/society

So this is rather interesting, and it would be a first in a genre where character persistence is one of the defining traits.

That actually looks kind of stupid...

You die and your heir gets your stuff and your character traits?

Most people tend to die at least once a day (minimum) especially if there is PVP in the world. Your telling me I have 3000 children that are all grown up and ready to inherit my stuff?

Its an absurd abstract explanation that essentially just means you've been cloned and jump into a clone body rather than be resurected.

Its not a real permadeath (you dont even lose your stuff) and its not a very good explanation of how you have potentially 1000's of grown up children

At least in Anarchy Online (which had a similar - you die and another body gets all your stuff and traits) there was a sci-fi explanation: as in, nano bots went and picked up your equipment and transfered it to a cloned body and your skills were reduced to the level they were at during your last insurance payment / brain scan

Its a pseudo permadeath that isnt really a true permadeath penalty, and the explanation of having tons of heirs is troublesome to me in a fantasy setting

Well, diablo is still more massive than some "modern" self-proclaimed MMOs...

I lol'ed on this one. But I agree, the idea of having it permadeath is absurd if you still have your stuffs. LoLed on the heir part as well.. kinda stupid imho, just make it that you revive at least though impossible in real life, it is more accepted in mmos.

As for the diablo II hardcore mode. I think that guy just compared it, never read any part stating that he called diablo II is an mmo.

I gather that the "heir" will recieve a portion of the character's traits and some of his 'estate'. This was discussed on the forum and though they admit it is not going to be 100% realistic in that sense it is explained much more on there.

 Actually it wouldn't.

Realms of Torment was the first MMO(never saw release as far as I know) that had the EXACT same mechanic to "pass down" to an heir your wealth, gear(given you had someone present when you died to loot the gear) and they also started out at higher lvl skill instead of from scratch(skill based game).

But you also lost limbs in combat, could be one shotted by raid style mobs, and numerous others things like Death himself roamed the world and could one shot you.

Also public executions for those who killed there own race or kidnapped others heirs for ransom.

I did the beta for like 6 weeks before plug was pulled back in like 02' or 03' .

Pity it was pulled sounds like my kind of game. Far as I know this many similar concepts. The ransoming etc is one feature that sounds similar. Probably still alot of room to influence their ideas at this stage, community is still small.

ALBA is still in early development, so I wouldn't judge it too harshly quite yet :)  From what has been discussed in chat and in the developers blog post, the idea is not to have all traits immediately handed down to your heir.

Say your father was a blacksmith in the Middle Ages. Your entire life you have spent around the forge. You're bound to have picked up certain knowledge about the trade, and probably even dabbled a bit in minor things. Your father dies in a sudden and tragic accident involving a horse, and you suddenly become the man of the household. Yes, your father's possessions are now yours (if he willed them to you), but you won't be a master smith without practice. However, due to your exposure to the trade, you do know a bit more than any old Joe off the street.

This is the general idea behind the inheritence system. Another important factor to take into consideration is that you actually have to marry and have a child. You don't just magically spawn a 16 year old heir. So hopefully, before you become a big man on campus, you've thought ahead and took a wife and had a child in case of any unfortunate horse incidents.

There is still much development and time ahead of ALBA, so this will no doubt be examined in close detail later and may change. But the dev team is quite intent on providing an alternate 'death' experience than the current MMO market.

Stop by the chat if you have any questions. Wouldn't hurt to join the forums and keep tabs on the development.

I could see this working in a PvE exclusive game.  However in anyting that involved PvP forget it.  Someone always wins and someone always loses.  At any given time half the playerbase will be rerolling.  It just doesn't lend itself to the design well.
