Nostaligia does play a role in peoples opinions. Also access, over time the people able to gain access to MMOs have significanty increased over the years, with Broadband internet and such. The other thing is that some just complain to complain it does not stop them from playing a game. The two great examples is World of Warcraft and Sony ... how many people gripe about Activision/Blizzards product and all of Sony's products.

I think the truth lies somewhere in the fact that if you have been a mmo player for a very long time, you were on the ground floor in this new genre that only had a few games to play. UO, Everquest, DAOC were the beginning and most mmo gamers packed into the communites they were the most comfortable with .

Nowadays, there are so many mmo's to pick from the genre resembles the console gamers market. There's alot of games to pick from and i believe when dealing with mmo's there is not gonna be that much of a differnance between them, so they tend to be the same old same old to alot of people.

Everyone has their own vision of their ideal MMO, a genre with such broad possibilities. That, and MMOs are hugely expensive, therefore fewer and further between, than games in other genres. Id est, the stakes are higher and people get more passionate, aware of their role as the selective pressure in the evolution of the genre.

They are trying to recapture that first blush experience. This is impossible because they are suffering from nostalgia and no game can live up to a perfect mental image.
.
So they sit in the forum and gripe.

This is exactly it. Nostalgia for whatever someone considered a perfect gaming experience drives most of the griping now. If only the developers hadn't done X, Y or Z, they'd still be playing that game, but since the devs are assholes for (insert reasons here), they left that game and have been pining for their rose-colored memories ever since.

No, that's not exactly it.  You can't boil down the feelings of thousands of people to a simple 'nostalgia' or 'hate' explanation (both words, when applied to MMORPG discourse, are complete cliches anyhow).  I understand the desire to want to slap a one-word label on something and consider the matter closed, human nature is to take the easiest approach to understanding something even if that approach fails to acknowledge the truth.

As Kyleran said earlier, the reality is that the genre has changed incredibly since its early games (UO, AC, etc).  The people that loved those games saw the potential of MMOs as virtual worlds and are largely disappointed with how they've since morphed into derivative/repetitive level treadmills with no real player freedom or choice.

The pie analogy doesn't work;  a more accurate one would be:

Mayor Morpg: "Welcome to the HappyVille Pie Competition.  Mr. Fussy McCritik will be judging today. Well Fussy...talk to me about your thoughts on the competition?"

Fussy McCritik: "These aren't pies.  They're cakes.  Get back to me when you've a) made a pie, or b) correctly labeled your cake as a cake."

The biggest reason people hate on MMOs is that going from one to another feels the same.  It might have a shiny new wrapper on the outside but the core is exactly the same as the one you had left the new game for.  So when you fight through the same kind of content with similar quest lines and grind it's very easy to start getting grumpy about our choices out there.  As a community we've had so many great hopes on games only to have them crushed time and time again.  At this point we're all waiting for the game that will give us our golden carrot so that we'll be happy.  So we all get our hopes up only to have them crushed and the cycle continues.

I believe that the market has become over saturated with mediocre product meant to be cash cows for their producers.  Our only hope is that the cows wither up and die so that developers might innovate a bit more.

No, that's not it for me.

Many a player liked Vanguard because it was sort of like EQ, but many left because the game was bugged. Many MMO are just very unfinished and unpolished. People can get over nostalgia if the game is good, I think many MMO are just sub quality games.

That and MMO people come in here and try to pull some kind of MMO rank. "Oh , I been playing MMO's ever since UO and EQ first came out.... games were so much better back than, you new MMO people take everything for granted"

Honestly I been playing MMO's since Nexus TK came out in 95-97  First Graphical MMORPG(started in 97) I don't want games to take a step backward and be like that game. It is old and outdated.

The games were NOT so much better , it is just all your friends and nostalgia of playing, you are now burned out with MMO's other wise you would still be playing the ones you love so much, or the new ones that are out.

It's like when I played Zelda Online (Graal Online) back in 97..  ,then  in 98-99 Everyone was always talking about oh it was better back during beta ?.?.?  (so long ago I forget the numbers)  but  anyhow, it wasn't better it was garbage back than and there were exploiters everywhere and the game was glitchy. The only thing better about it was the friends that played back then.

People let Nostalgia blind them to reality. Don't believe half the crap you hear about how these games were better it is just not true. They were the only option available at the time.

I left out the rest of this post because it was just a wall of ignorance and assumption.

People like different things, that's all it boils down to.  The people that liked the MMOs that came out 10 years ago now have no option because games aren't being made that way anymore.  It's got nothing to do with 'nostalgia' or whatever other cliches that forum simpletons want to throw around.  Some people just flatly enjoyed that style of game more, and they're (understandably) upset that no one is making updated versions with pretty 3d graphics.

I think it has a lot to do with the types of MMORPG games getting published these days. Most are half-baked money grabbers and nothing more. You can recapture that feeling of your first MMORPG. I have done it. And I truly believe it will happen to me again in my liftetime.

Relative to the times, those old games were better sometimes. Compared 1 on 1 they are worse.

But people are used to very polished games now, there are standards in terms of polish that Blizzard and other companies have set and every game will be compared to them. Many games don't live up to those standards.

I left all my MMO because they didn't live up to basic programming / hacking prevention / customer service, not because of nostalgia.

The same reason why regular gamers hate so many non-mmo games, why so many movie watchers hate so many movies, why so many tv viewers hate so many tv shows, etc etc etc.

People are very opinionated and they all have different tastes, it is no different then any other form of entertainment. Go check out movie forums and see how many people say movie x or y sucks.

That's a total cop-out in my opinion. I think those players probably really would still be playing those games if the developers hadn't changed the game so much over time. And the communities have changed too. WoW has had like 3 or 4 different developer teams with different visions for the game. Just because you don't agree with one team's vision doesn't mean you are wearing rose-colored glasses, in my opinion.

That's hard to disagree with.

But I'd add that with MMO's the WAIT between one really good one and the next can seem like forever, as can the development time. When is that next great MMO going to come along, for me?

At least with movies, music, tv imo there's always a few good ones out each year?

Because no players have ever played the same multiplayer game for more than a year or so, right?

And not to forget Mr Casual , who likes sticking his finger in lots of different Pies, which of course Mr Hardcore does'nt like because he thinks Mr Casual should only be eating one type of Pie ( namely his Pie). And in turn Mr Casual hates Mr Hardcore because he thinks he should stick his finger in more pies like he does  ! lol

... this is a great thread btw :)

Actually that's kind of what I thought about the older ones. Half assed garbage just thrown together in order to rake in a some money.

Some of these games are still out there and still charging people to play them. It's just an insult. You think your company's game is worth what the games of today are?

A fuckin 2d game (nexus the kingdom of winds)

(Graal Online) a rip off of Zelda Link to the past or w/e  2d game charging a sub fee?  GTFO

EQ ????  At least these games are 3d now and have some kind of quality customer support. But glitchy and filled with bugs and no dev teams that give a rats ass.

WoW, they have update after update expansions, customer service, they have alot to offer people.

AoC excellent graphics, and so does AION.    Maybe these games did not do as good as WoW, but that's because nobody wants to give games a chance anymore. They bitch and complain and if they aren't what they thought they would be, they play it for like 5 hours and then never log in again.

I know how people are when they try out these games. They don't even get past the starter area before they QQ that it's too hard.

Stop crying and get together and make an MMO with a company if you want. We got enough of these cry babies out here that somebody must be in a position to do this sort of thing.  I honestly would like to see a real Zelda MMO, instead of that cheesy rip off from germany.  Make one, make it with the good graphics, and make it the way you want it and If it is good , I am sure people will play it, and probably me aswell.

They fell in love with their first MMO, whether it was UO, EQ1, AC, SWG whatever.
.

Actually they would be bored of that game by now and they would still be here bitching on the forums. No cop out.

Because no players have ever played the same multiplayer game for more than a year or so, right?

I Guess so man, usually people get bored and play a certain game on and off, because they are good at it. Have alot of stuff on that character and time invested into it.  Nothing is stoping people from playing the game if they want, unless of course it is closed down.,

AoC excellent graphics, and so does AION.    Maybe these games did not do as good as WoW, but that's because nobody wants to give games a chance anymore. They bitch and complain and if they aren't what they thought they would be, they play it for like 5 hours and then never log in again.

I tried Aion and I couldn't even talk to other people because the Gold spam was almost crashing my chat box. That has nothing to do with QQ but everything with a bad game / company. Then came the hours waiting before you could even log in a server.

That's all NCsoft's fault, not mine and people have a right to QQ about all of that.

And luckily people do QQ, or no one would know these issues until they wasted their money.
