Tritton headsets are specifically aimed at gamers and MMORPG.com correspondent Carolyn Koh has written a review about two of the most popular styles offered: the Tritton AX 120 and the Tritton AX 720. See what a gamer thinks of these headsets in Carolyn's comprehensive review.

When I spoke to Editor Jon Woods about reviewing more hardware for MMORPG and he gave me the go ahead, I looked around to see who I had seen at various shows and I warned the PR firm handling TRITTON that I was tough on headsets but TRITTON was brave enough to take me on and offered me two models, their budget model, the AX 120 retailing for $69.99 and their AX 720 for $129.99. Both are closed-type circumaural headphones – that is to say, they have hard, closed ear cups that cover the ears completely. They also have detachable boom-mikes.

I have the best pair of headphones they make, the AX 51 pros. The sound quality is nice, but don't expect to for it to be better than the Astros. I've tried both, and the Astros still sound better. Still, decent head phones.

Headphones are outragingly overpriced for how long they last. I bought a 99 dollar headset, and the mic broke within a month and I dont mean broke off it just stopped working completly. Now I use a 12 dollar desk mic and my normal speakers for my comp and have never looked back.

Yeh great headset but the last Tritton I bought I got screw over because the refuse to make driver for Windows 7 or 64 bit driver.  Now I have a perfectly good paper weight headset

After going through many brands of headsets, I finally found one that is comfortable to wear for longer gaming sessions.  I haven't tried Tritton, have actually never heard of them before this article.  I recently bought the Razer Carcharias.  It's extremely comfortable which was one of the selling points for me.  The cord, which feels and looks like a rope instead of a wire, is extra long and doesn't tangle up on me.  Having gotten the Razer keyboard for Christmas and followed that up with a Razer mouse, I guess I'm a bit biased, but I like their products.

Awesome Review.  We need more of these from you.  What pair of headphones do you use in your gaming?  I'm currently using the logitech G35 and it is ok, the lows are easily distorted on them though.

Well, that was a surprising read from this site! I don't have the money to buy any good headphones myself anyway. But several friends have the Logitech G35 headset and of course there are other brands too. Plenty sites reviewed them. But now I wonder what you'd say about those too. Especially how they compare in that frequency test and the soundstage and imaging.

Maybe some sites have done that before. I just never really looked for it since only now I wonder because of your review.

You can get more with a kind word & a 2x4 than you can with just a kind word

Nice review.  I almost bought a pair of the Trittons and now I'm glad I didn't after reading this.

As a side note...any chance of getting more hardware reviews, Jon?

Thanks for the headset review.  Look forward to hearing more hardware reviews in the future. Might I suggest gamepads/gaming keyboards next?  =)     Maybe do multiple at a time and give the editor's choice ^^  (pst belkin nostros N52e)

I have the razer carcharias headset and I love them.  Good bass for  a headset, comfy for long gaming sessions and mic works great.  Overall it is excellent quality as can be seen in the braided, heavy duty cord.

Carolyn, that was an awesome review. I loved the technical details in this piece! I'd be very interested in the methods you use to test headphones in general, especially the frequency response you showed.

I have to say, I feel the need to ask if you actually have any headphone recommendations? Something with decent imaging and perhaps without the distortion. I wonder if that would even exist below $200? Have any tips? Maybe you know a couple of headphones which are not bad I could do some research on. I'm probably not the only one who'd love to have your insight.

Letaticon,

At Genesis (my day job) we use the CLIO measurement system by Audiomatica.  Other than that, it's critical listening with selected pieces of music that we are very familiar with in the office.  I am classically trained in piano and voice, and I have perfect pitch.

As I have not been exposed to a broad range of headsets, my current recommendation range for under $200 headphones is small:  Razer, Sennheiser and the up and coming NOX - which I am currently reviewing.

Cheers - Carolyn

Lack of directionality makes these a no go.  I won't have my headphones killing my PvP.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't bother with those when I was looking around for new headphones. I was weary of simulated surround sound, (total sound noob guy here), so I went with the Tritton AX360. They cost 90 bucks and I've been pretty happy with them so far. No idea if there are other simulated SS head phones that are worth the money but the ones I got have 4 speakers in each side and the separation is phenomenal. Being a noob on the difference between what I think about them and what they should sound like makes we wonder what someone who actually knows what they're talking about thinks about my head phones.

Great review by the way! We need more of these kinds of reviews!

A very interesting read. I would love to see different headsets/speakers tested.

Perhaps the Steel Series Syberia V2.

I think the review is compleatly lacking.  Cant reviewers describe better at how all the connections work and what kind they have?  If you want a real idea of what kinda headphones are on the matket, look through headphone.com.  Audiophiles have tweaked so many different aspects of there headphones with different hardware, there are so many different options when setting up a pair of headphones yet this review is like someone that gave there first vague intital impressions of it.  As much as I read about peoples reviews of headphones, they give no insight on how were supose to set all of it up, what kinda ports connect with what, and if are hardware even supports them in the first place.

I purchased a set of AX720's about six months ago to play FPS on my PS3 and I could not be happier with the sound quality. I would even say that my scores have improved due to what I feel is very good directional sound which seems to give me an advantage over a lot of my competition. In the end you get what you pay for and I feel $129.99 for the sound experience I have had is well justified.

While I think the review was well written I think the fact the reviewer is by his own admission used to a higher end audio experience on much more expensive equipment might have slightly skewed his expectations when it comes to the performance he expected from these headsets based on thier price.

It would be great to see more hardware reviews in the future.  I personally ended up with Razer Carcharias and love them.
