I can't believe Turbine made DDO F2P hoping to increase revenues instead of offering a station pass to all their games and include AC2 servers. Turbine has AC2 fans begging to give them money and they won't take it!!

If Turbine offered a special, and I mean special, (like the rainbow eep) in-game item for previous AC2 players for returning and a second item for new accounts you bring with you, AC2 would be in the green in the first 90 days. I mean the game is already done. Ya, like most games it could use a few more tweaks, but the millions in developement is already done and paid for!!

millions of dollars in IP collecting dust instead of dollars.  It's hard to believe their CFO is ok with that.

It's unfortunate that they let Microsoft manage this game at the beginning. if they had a better launch (AoC's launch was leagues better), they may have had a better retention rate, more advertisements, more hype, more a lot of things. Unfortunately that didn't happen, and unfortunately this game may never come back again.

I mean in any form at all, because, Turbine squashed a emu effort and I think there is a german group working on one, but it's hard to tell if they are actively working on it or not, and no word from Turbine if they will bring it back. :(

I would prefer they updated the original game. I never did like AC2 for some reason.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

I submitted a question to the devs of AC1 recently as it was part of the 10th anniversary and it was answered...

-------------------------------------------------------------

"Does Turbine or the dev team have any plans to revisit the Asheron's Call "universe" and make a new game based on this or a new expansion to the original Asheron's Call?"

Turbine is always evaluating all kinds of game opportunities. That said, new games have a notorious tendency to fracture existing player bases, but in the future who knows?

As for new Asheron's Call "expansions" that term is often applied to large paid expansions. We don't have plans to suddenly introduce a paid expansion for Asheron's Call. We prefer to have free content updates.

That said, we are all psyched to see players running around having fun with the 10th anniversary update and we are already planning our next big celebration update. I can't give you the exact dates, but if everything works out the update might be as soon as late Spring. Stay tuned for future news and tidbits on this upcoming celebration.

----------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, I already knew the answer and immediately cancelled all four of my Asheron's Call 1 accounts. I've been playing AC1 since release and LOVED AC2. The game had so much potential and for them to kill it and NOT continue the AC1 franchise is nonsense and clearly shows that Turbine doesn't give a damn about Asheron's Call. Sure, they have the 10th Anniversary. But, they clearly have no plan to bring new players to the game.

It doesn't matter. I'm "voting" with my wallet. I'm done with Turbine. They USED to be "Powered By Our Fans." They are no longer.

AC1 was insane back in the day and I still long for it at times, AC2 was okay...but not like we were told it would be.

If they took the existing game and overhauled the engine and world , leaving the game mechanics alone, I would love to be involved in that. I certainly would sub a few accounts to it as well.

I still have fond memories of working through the reagents needed to cast a spell, making elemental arrows and watching my first flaming arrow smoke its way through the sky.   /sigh.

MC-Hammer pants later on..lol

edit - found memories just does not sound right..

You know you are old when the dev's on the games you play are almost young enough to be your grand-kids.

If they brought the game back in any form without the technical issues that caused it to fold, I would play in a heartbeat.

I wish AC2 would be free 2 play but im affraid Turbine will never go for that then they lose face.

There is still a rather big AC2 community out there but we can only dream im affraid:(

I wonder if Turbine would ever just TRY one server...... maybe 3 and just test it out..

open DT

open shadow claim (faction pvp server i think this is the name)

open Harvestgain

If they opened those just for a trial i think they would see a large surge of players playing once again.

Lol you eather have never played AC2 or just as so many ac1 players thought it would be ac1 with better grafhics and you demonize ac2 sind then your just haters/trolls nothing more:(

Actually, I would be inclined to agree with AlienShirt on this one and I played both AC1 and AC2...

AC1 had way more actual content out of the box than AC2 had reason being that AC2 was meant to be  more "organic"given that it was supposed to have started after an apoclypse and the world was in ruins.

Side Note: Definite opportunity areas here as doing this would have made sense if the decisions for where "visible reconstruction" took place was done at each server patch as opposed to how infrequently it was done in game.

AC1 had excellent server stability. AC2 had server issues even after those related to launch.

AC1's classes were more dynamic  than AC2's. This was Turbine's attempt to stamp out the OG builds, instead they created classes that were just ridiculously OP given the right equipment.

Story...AC1 had it, AC2 didn't.

But, neither game was bad judged on it's own merit...If I had to chalk up one reason for why AC2 failed I would directly attribute the failure to Microsoft (or it's game developer face Ken Karl).

Poor, Unlcear, Untrue,  or Unpleasant Communication with players.

MS's billing server, Chat server, Play server were all junk.

MS can be attributed as having forced the launch of the game early as well.

AC1 was a better game by pure virtue of the fact that MS (Ken Karl) messed with it less.

I thought AC2 had some VERY interesting concepts going for it as far as the class abilities and how they could mesh with each other tactically.

I just found it so utterly boring that I couldn't get much past the opening area. I could never quite place my finger on it, but some combination of attributes just made the entirety of the game feel so small and underwhelming, right from the get go. =(

AC2 was my first true MMO and i loved it and miss it a great deal. i played from a couple months after release to october 2004 on coldeve. What finally got me to quit was the poor/insulting customer service from a turbine admin in game.

I never played AC1 so i dont know if these were features taken from it but there were alot of features in AC2 that im amazed never were applied to other games. I especially loved the allegiance/guild set up where individuals swore to be vassels to individual patrons in the guild they joined which gave xp passup rewards to patrons as well as titles which encouraged the patrons to help and assist there vassels which i think went a long way towards helping create a good community and inter-guild relations. I also loved the fact that loot was random so you never knew when or where you would get that next awesome weapon/armor which meant that you were free to do whatever you wanted instead of feeling like you have no choice but to run a particular dungeon ad naseum. I also liked the emphasis on xp points on your skill customization instead of just lvl's, and the ability to make good viable hybrid build's(until they nerfed it all to hell when they raised the cap past 50).

Alot of the problems people had with AC2 (minus the fact that it isnt AC1) were technical issues that modern hardware has since overcome easily. Rubber banding was caused by the network traffic being divided up on several actual hardware servers in the open world, so there was network lag when you crossed from area covered by 1 server to the next which you couldnt tell where it would happen given it was not zoned in game. Now we can run several servers worth of the game on 1 physical hardware server. Also our internet connections have been much improved since when this game was around, as has our hardware. This game was very much ahead of its time which is more obvious when you see it on our modern pc's. The graphics still look pretty good by todays standard's. On our current pc's it looks better than we were ever able to see it with what we had 5 yrs ago. Its not Aion or AoC, but still not bad.

I found it interesting.

I can say now I have, and that was very interesting indeed.

I still would love to play this game again, I never did play AC just AC2. It was not my first MMORPG, but was at the beginning of me going from a FPS player to a RPG player.
Really I could say a whole lot more, but I kinda doubt AC2 will be back. I was very upset when they pulled the plug, took me a lil bit too figure and get things figured out, and was just starting to get into it when it happened.

But yeah, about that title here, got me all excited, , but I see just   like others have said,  Damn you OP

I hate AC2.

Wanna know why?

Because the very first contest I ever won here was a boxed copy of AC2.

AC2's closure was announced a few days later.

So what did mmorpg.com give me in place of AC2?

A beta key for The Chronicle.

So a somewhat good game was closed down just so I would have to be exposed to the lunacy that was Rapid Reality Games and their short lived The Chronicle.

It was all an epic scheme on the part of Turbine to piss me off.

So screw AC2.

All you guys saying Come on turbine, it wont actually help. You'll have to start up a petition form and get signatures for it. Maybe then they'll hear our call. It shouldn't be that hard to release the source code for the game and let the fans throw a server of their own if they're done with the game and want to focus on other things.

Turbine is not going to release the source code for AC2. It is an earlier iteration of the Turbine Engine (TE2 I think) that is used for both DDO and LOTRO. We already saw what happened when a group tried to get an emmulator running - a Cease and Desist from Turbine. Now some are trying the open source route, but it has been slow going. I do find it ironic that people are still trying to get the game back approaching 5 years after the servers were shut down, which is longer than the game was live.  It is a bit of a testament to how loved it was, and is, but its loyal fans.
