I come to this site hoping to find a sliver of good news, and it never comes. It's the same old thing. It seems there are only a few games doing well, and the rest are just tanking. I had hoped Vanguard was getting some new life, but despite the many positive comments about the game play, it seems everyone has given up since SOE has it on life support only. I had hoped maybe Fallen Earth had improved and gained a decent population, but people say it still pretty much sucks and the population is low. I'm so tired of looking on the horizon toward new games that either never seem to come, or tank on launch. Is anyone playing anything besides WoW, Eve, or Lotro that is a great game with a thriving population and community? Are these really the dark times of MMOs or are people just spread across so many of them now that having a large community is a pipe dream? G A M I N G . O N L I N E . S I N C E |1995| |

I guess we have to settle with what we have... Luckily there's some good things on the horizon atleast. Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference. -Author unknown, attributed to Mark Twain |

Well theres always Aion, STO and well...from the bigger more recent things that is it, but just becouse a game isnt full doesnt mean its not worth your time. City of Heroes is doing pretty well, Lineage 2 is still around, even SW Galaxies has people playing. That being said I sometimes have the same feeling, especially now that i have grown tired of WoW. Ive been playing alot of f2p games but theyre quality is nowhere near the big mmo no matter what people claim. The good thing is that once this drought is over there will be many simply huge mmos. DC Universe, GW2, SW ToR, Warhammer Dark Millenium, Rift, Tera all very promising games. If waiting bother you so much you could observe STO for a bit. They seem to have gotten the general idea of what the players want and are going in the right direction for once by fleshing out the Klingon side. If you would like a more action packed game I say go for Global Agenda. Right now the game is hellafun and soon there will be a massive patch adding an mmo type zone. If this games retains the playerbase I hope that it will become a bit like Planetside. I think its quite likely really. Bigger more open world may mean large scale battles at some point. |

I have no reason at all to believe any of the games set for the next two years will do anything but tank. I'm just sick of looking forward is all. I need something interesting to play now. The dark times? Man, you're gaming during the boon of MMORPGs! How about when your choices were Ultima Online or Everquest? Or when there was FFXI and SWG? |

I agree with the OP, nothing else to play, I even had to change of genre, now I am playing fps, waiting on either Swtor, GW2 or Tera and yeah we do have a bunch of MMO's but only like 10% of them are worth trying. |

Don't expect great artwork from a coder. It just doesn't happen. |

TV used to be 4 channels, 6 or so if you were lucky enough to be near a big city. ... and there was almost always something worth watching because shows made money.
Now with cable and 200+ channels plus PPV and despite all the variety the quality has gone down. There simply isn't enough money to fund them all properly. A few great shows make decent money and the rest don't.
The same happens in MMORPGs.
My suggestions are to either go with a winner in the AAA market, of find a niche game and accept that it won't look like it was made with a fifty-million dollar budget. Currently in development Wizards and Champions (formerly ActionMMORPG) |

FFXIV comes out in 2 and half months, GW2 and SW:TOR within the next 6-12months. Seriously you have no interest in any of the big 3 on the horizon?
I am getting tired of WoW too, but Cata is coming and I will get sucked into the lvl and gear grind once again, especially withn dungeon finder |

Well you want to know why the MMORPG genre has gotten like this? Check this out http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=209004&postcount=15 If I criticize anything, i get labeled a WoW fanboy. http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/anyone-else-happy-with-gw2-t3695p9.html
History doesnt repeat History,, People Repeat History.
And past records show, people on this site, blindly support MMORPG games while blinded by fanbosim, that they never criticize anything a developer says. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE DEVELOPER DOESNT EVEN HAVE MEDIA TO BACK UP THOSE CLAIMS. |

This is so true unfortunately. The market is way oversaturated and the players are spread around so many deiiferent titles, that only the old titles that were constantly developed over the past years seem to flourish: WoW for themepark and EvE for sandbox. We could use a SciFi-themepark for the people that like the WoWesque game-system which seems to be coming in the form of SWTOR and then we need something like EvE without the space-ships, which seems to be coming in the form of Earthrise. Other then that there's only short-term-attractions released over and over again, which stop being developed after they've made the developer a reasonable amount of profit. Most developers don't want to create a lasting game with a good community these days, which is the problem to begin with, just like all the mediocre TV-shows, that never see the second season. |

Why should anyone want to play this game? No content makes for a pretty boring game usually. |

Originally posted by Netzoko Well, yes but it started with very few players and is still very small. Great that it grows and have enough people to stay afloat but comparing it to Wow, Eve and LOTRO is wrong, it is more like Vanguard and similar smaller MMOs. There are a few other MMOs with OK population, like EQ2, AoC, AION and a few more. AoC probably have more players right now than LOTRO (who is going F2P soon) and AION have more than both Eve and LOTRO even if most of the players are Korean. Then there are the F2P MMOs. But the fact is that few full budget games have been made by competent devs the last few years. That is however changing now, Arenanet, Square-Enix, CCP and Bioware are all releasing games soon and I can't think of any as experienced devs that has released a game since 2004. So there will be a few larger games soon, FF XIV is releasing in September. OP is probably right that not all of those games will hold up to it's promise but one or 2 is good enough. Things will change, making a good MMO takes a long time and cost a lot of money so there can just be so many games in development at the same time. And if you want something to compare: EQ was 6 years old when Wow released. Wow is 6 years now, it should be time for something soon. |
