Well I am glad you disagree with me Ozmodan.

Perhaps you can enlighten us further?

PC Gamers in a nutshell

I play games on Consoles, PCs and even..... (dun, dun, duhhhhhh!!!!) retro and portable systems. If it wasn't for Steam, I wouldn't even bother with PC gaming at all. Juggling discs, book length keys, limits on the number of times you can install and retarded DRM that requires you to be connected to the interweb at all times.... Sersiously, fuck that.

I also feel that the gamepad is more comfortable than the keyboard and mouse. BTW, you remember Crysis? You know, that PC exclusive FPS that had system requirements that were waaaaayyyyyyy above what most people actually owned at the time of its launch? The one that had more keys than Microsoft Flight Simulator? You could play it with an XBox 360 controller. And I don't mean that you could use Xpadder or Joy2Key or Pinnacle or SwitchBlade. You could just turn it on from the options menu, in the game itself. Why? The game was a PC exclusive. It was never meant to be ported to any console. So why the 360 controller support? And isn't it interesting that you could do all the things with the gamepad that you could do with the keyboard and mouse set up?

You can complain about the pad having less precision than a mouse, but you're full of shit if you think that a gamepad can't elegantly handle all of the functions of a keyboard.

Yeah, I'd like a console MMO. If for no other reason than it would be more convenient than anything on the PC. I like to... you know... PLAY games.

Lowering the barriers to entry so a person can hop in and just play the game is a major bonus.

I think we'd all love to just pop in a disk and create our character and go... no installs, no downloads, no patches, no configurations, no driver updates....

General consensus I am gathering on the net is "wait till the next generation of consoles" and unfortunately I think this is true.

Better/faster/more numerous processors, gpus, more memory, a lot more hard drive space, more built in network/internet integration....

But at the same time I'd like to see a game designed specifically for consoles and thus controls made specifically for game pad controllers and would like to see what kind of depth and fluidity we could get with such a control scheme.

As well as my original points of fully optimized engine/network code for a single hardware platform.

etc. etc.

I think future consoles will be designed with mmos in mind as for the arguement that they would be full of childish morons well as much as I love mmos on PCs I've found theres plenty of playing already . So thats a redundant arguement . The only way to avoid such things is to have adult servers . I imagine these will be a lot easier to police when microphone chat in future console or PC mmos becomes a standard . Its quite difficult for your voice  to sound like your 18 when your 12 .

MMO sandbox games are as exciting as watching paint dry.

Age checks, coupled with voice, still wont insure that Tommy Tuna, with the barotone voice, isnt a total twit.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

The mute key is your friend.

Although that can get a little dicey in an MMO. If you're in a zone of 150 people, finding the right name to mute might be a big hassle.

Well... all you do with a PC is gaming? In that case: Yes, the guy who spent $2000 dollars on a PC is the douchebag.

But seriously... most of us do a lot more things with a PC. I for one do earn my money with it, need it for university, do 2D Art, surfing on the net and so on.

What can you do with a console? Play, watch movies and browse the web to a limited extent.

Can't say you need a $2,000 PC for photoshop, surfing the net, and class assignments.  In fact, if that was all I used my PC for, I'd just pay 400 dollars for a cheap netbook or I'd still be using the very first PC I ever bought way back in 2002, so I'm still coming out ahead.  The only reason I'm using a $2,000 laptop atm is because I'm a PC gamer and didn't feel like lugging a desktop back and forth from school to home all the time.

Part of knowing that you have a hobby is when you're willing to spend more money than what is sensible for your own enjoyment, and there's nothign wrong with that.  I just don't like the BS that PC gamers are somehow more intelligent because they play with a keyboard and mouse over a gamepad.

You do realise you can play MMO's and other games now with a game pad on your pc using a program called switchblade? Cant remember all the compatible games you can use with it but I know you can use it with AOC, City of Heros/villains, Guild Wars, WOW and Warhammer. Ime not sure how well this works since i don't own a 360 pad myself but it could give you an idea of how well it can work.

I have used it for WoW and it does work.

I am not talking about some cheap pc to console port or 3rd party app to play PC games with a controller.

I'm talking about a game made specifically for consoles.

And voice chat could work just like it does on XBOX games now.

Only your in-game party, or create a "custom" party just for voice chat that can actually have players in different games. This is friends list only.

For larger groups then 3-4 people the "raid leaders" or whatever could set rules for who can or can't speak to keep dozens of people from talking at once.

Or, exactly like Ventrillo servers...

And with NO trade chat or general chat, you'd never really have to hear the less-then-admirable aspects of the community that you don't want to.

Why Reklaw?

FFXIV will be available on the PS3 and just like FFXI will be more "deep" than most fantasy MMORPGs on the market.

If FFXIV is possible on the PS3, any deep and advanced exclusive MMORPG would be possible on the PS3 too.

You mentioned your friend is God of War fan, you also mentioned that God of War 3 looks amazing (and it does), try to play Demon's Souls with your friends.

Demon's Souls is not a MMO, but it has a very unique multiplayer concep and it is by far the most Hard Core RPG released in the last years.

But I really think the current generation of consoles are still a bit too underpowered and we'll need to wait until the next gen comes out before serious progress can be made on them.

Underpowered?

FFXIV is one of the most impressives upcoming MMORPGs and it will be on the PS3 too.

Just compare the graphics of FFXIV with SWTOR, FFXIV is much more advanced.

The PS3 and the 360 may sound "underpowered" if you compare to a high end PC, but with the optmization and possibilities of a dedicated "closed" system like the PS3 it is possible to create exclusives and expresives MMOS titles for Consoles.

Try to play God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls and your impressions about graphics, gameplay depth and community (especially on Demon's Souls) on Console gaming may change.

Sorry, man.....but the nature of PC games (IE: hardware configuration, the need to install the game, etc) more or less weeds out most of the morons who instead buy consoles for their simplicity. Gather these people into one area....such as an MMORPG community, and you'll have nothing but grief.

Popular games will probably have a worse community, you will find a lot of idiots in World of Warcraft, Halo, Guild Wars, Gears of Wars and Modern Warfare. It has nothing to do with the plataform the game is on.

Most challenging and hardcore games are released on consoles today and not on PC. When we talk about single player and multiplayer games on PC, most if not ALL them are Console ports. Even games like Oblivion, Call of Duty, Fallout and Mass Effect today have the console as main focus because they sell much more on Consoles, without Consoles we would not even be able to play games like Mass Effect or Batman AA on the PC, game developres would not get enough money to produce so many AAA games. Soon the same will happen with MMORPGs.

Beside World of Warcraft what really sells on PC are casual games like The Sims, PC is not the palaform for hardcore , challenging or complex games, not today.

When we talk about Console community, the community of Halo or Modern Warfare is TOTALLY different than the community of Demon's Souls, Little Big Planet or Sacred 2.

There is much more people playing on the 360 and PS3 than people playing on "gaming" PCs you will find all kind of gamers on consoles.

Your idea that someone need skills or inteligence to install games or a new piece of hardware on PC is laughable, people use the same "amount" of skill to install a home theater or to configure a Plasma TV and by the way, you will install and get online updates in most PS3 games too.

 About what gooseh?

About game communities on consoles? Well, you need to play those games and check for yourself how the argument that most console players are idiots and most pc gamers are "inteligent" is wrong. As I said, you will find all kinds of gamers on console communities, some are bad, some are good, just like it is with PC gaming communities.

About how consoles are the main focus for single/multiplayer player games today and how they sell much more on consoles? Check links related to selling numbers, piracy numbers, interview with Epic and some other game companies that decided to avoid PC releases because the money they get from this plataform versus piracy and what they get from consoles is not enough. You will understand why ME, Oblivion and many games are marketed primaly for Consoles.

You can find many MMORPG developers saying how consoles can be a great market for MMORPGs too, the main issue is, a game for console need to really work, need to be really polished, we know how it is rare with MMOs.

Outside games from Blizzard, some NCsoft/Arena Net games and The Sims, the gaming market related to PCs is really small if we compare with Console gaming. If you don't belive, feel free to check the numbers, feel free to check how small is the area dedicated to PC games in videogame stores.

About Final Fantasy XIV, well, the only thing you need to do is to check some videos and info about this game, you will realize the game is more advanced on graphics than most other MMORPG releases, so to produce a modern MMORPG that runs on a console like the PS3 is not an issue.

In the end, I don't need to provide a link, you can easily find links, numbers, interviews that will backup what I am saying. Nothing I said is a "secret", everything is well known if you are familiar with today's gaming on PC and Consoles.

Incorrect. FFXI was designed for the PS2; the PC version was a port that didn't come until almost a year later. Everquest Online Adventures was never released on the PC at all.

Closest we have come are the Phantasy Star games and Final Fantasy XI (and upcoming XIV).
These games have, however:
1. Always made considerations for being multi-platform (and we all know with multi-platform there is almost always a "bad port")

Once again, incorrect. FFXI was originally released as a console exclusive, as was Phantasy Star Online. PC ports of both came much later.

2. Designed and initially released by Japanese and then ported over to NA/EU.

Very true. What does it have to do with anything?

I think that he's getting at the fact that most PC games are made for a western audience while the two games in question were not. It's kind of odd though when you think about it. There's a big PC gaming market throughout Asia but we rarely see any of the PC only games that get developed over there. I mean, I've got Ragnarock Battle Offline installed right now and I've played a few totally awesome Doujin shmups, but we really only get to see Korean and Chinese Cash shop games.

Having said that, there's a big difference between how the Asian market percieves PC games and the way we see PC games. Here, the PC is reserved for only three genres: RPG, RTS and FPS. In the East, the PC is looked at as just another console. I have yet to encounter an Asian PC game that didn't have automatic gamepad support right out of the box. And by automatic I mean plug and play. You don't have to turn on the game pad in the options. You don't have to map the buttons. You just plug in the controller and play. Over here, we're just now getting to the point where the gamepad is supported on ports of games that WERE ORIGINALLY MADE FOR CONSOLES.

I think that both Western PC game developers and players need to get over themselves and admit that the PC is just another platform. There is no reason why I couldn't be playing Ninja Gaiden Black or Devil may Cry with a gamepad on my PC. Likewise, there's no reason why someone can't make an RTS with a proprietary trackball / mouse controller for the Xbox 360. Hell, there is really no reason why and RTS game can't be released on the XBox 360 with keyboard + mouse support right out of the box.

I can spend $300 on a pc that will NOT run games at max settings but games will STILL look better than on a console... actually i spent some $800 on an almost perfect gaming pc, you just need to know what to buy.

(BTW you intelligently spend $600 on a game console and then another 600$ to buy 15 games that are 1-2 years old. I spend $800 on a PC and buy the exact same games for $200... so, who spent less in the end?)

Because as I said I base it on all the promises made by many game company´s over the years about their games being availeble on console.

As for FFXIV it hasn´t been released yet has it? We´ll see how it really turns out when it is released before I would make a comment of it being a deep MMORPG. Over the years we have seen to many promises, regardless if it´s console or pc versions about how deep the experiance might be(come) with many disappointments.

Will FFXIV indeed become this grand MMORPG on console I will not be afraid to admit I was wrong.........

Well  reading through these 10 pages of console vs PC vs MMO, and seeing the obvious that not many remember that this was actually attempted a few years ago with the PS2 back when EQ was the big boy on the block just before WoW.

http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/59/EverQuest-Online-Adventures.html

Back when this was first attempted it i had been playing the original EQ for a few years, then this came out and i jumped onto it. ALOT different than the original. Some liked it some didn't, but the fact that most seem to have forgotten it speaks to the fact that MMOs did not and would not port well to the current console setting. Maybe in a decade or so when you wont be able to tell the difference as well all be using VR head gear or something.

You forgot to add the $600+ for a Television capable of even displaying those console graphics.. after all, a PC price usually includes a monitor.. Consoles however.. do not.
