Everquest. But let me clarify something I consider important. I propose that EQ1, out of the gate in the first few months, provided an experience for people that has never been matched by anything. It had a lot of bugs, frustrations, etc., etc. and WoW and some others (Lotro) have tons more polish. But they haven't provided that early experience when a gamer stepped into it (LOL) and experienced 3d mmo for the first time - and with a combination of features that were breathtaking at the time. It had just enough with its launch timing that many gamers had an indelible epiphany about what gaming could be. The player to player interaction and the harshness of the enviroment (death penalty, travel, etc.) had a lot to do with it. It was king by numbers in the US and by experience but also by a unique experience that people had with it. Ten years later how many people remember the details of their first days in a game so vividly? The game that is new enough, and gives the lucky combination of features, to provide that experience again...that is what one hopes for, but it is doubtful. Its really tough.

Everquest I had never heard of an mmo and knew of very few computer games but the one game that kept coming up was; Everquest
It was in the news, people who didn't know about games were even talking about it. So then I decided to look at the box one day at the comp usa as there was a huge Everquest display and I went "ew". And that kids was how your father never got to play everquest. (sorry, just watched the pilot of "how I met your mother". |

From the western world:
UO then when EQ came out EQ took over.
People often forget about AC because it wasn't a heavy advertised game but at it's peak it wasn't far behind UO, and UO was right on the heels of EQ.
DAoC had a good sized population too but I'm not sure where it ended up in the rankings.
MMOs were fewer then, and they all did something original and different from the others. UO was the first open world and open PvP. EQ brought 3D and brought a resemblance to classic fantasy classes from D&D style games. AC brought the classless style of UO, added levels, created an open non instanced 3D world and a 100% unique fantasy realm using all newly created creatures. DAoC created RvR.
Since there were fewer games, they were all unique, and all quality they all had good size player bases. WoW polished up EQs style, took elements from AC2 (such as UI) and made sure everything worked cleanily and was easy to use. It brought in gamers that hadn't ever considered MMOs and so it took off like a rocket.
Since then the majority of games have been highly unoriginal and instead of all trying to be unique, they've all tried to be the same. This has caused the majority to be in one game instead of more even spread out across several major players.
there's a reason that all of those 4 solid games are still running (several of them at or approaching 11 years straight), and many other games have come and gone since then. |

Phantasy Star Online was a console instance based multiplayer online game that came out before wow for the Dream Cast in 2000 and had a large fan base world wide (by Sega). I miss those days... I have the right to like what I want! |

Originally posted by Katilla Also agree. WoW doesn't even register as an MMO to me. Heavily instanced, linear, fast paced leveling/questing/travel, instant gratification aspects out the wazoo, item shops....it's more a glorified console RPG than an MMO.

In subs yes EQ was biggest in europe and us, But LINEAGE 1 and even 2 where biggest in world for p2p with millions of subs before WoW came. And by far was asherons call most orginal and best mmo of the 3 uo-eq(themepark)-ac true sandbox that came out in 90's |

Originally posted by morbidanya I was there for M59. While it did predate EQ, it was not the king. I am not that much of a pvp person though, I am going strictly on content and the feeling of actually being in fantsy world minus all the loading... please wait... screens. EQ had the whole first person view done right. I don't think any MMO since it, has ever really gotten that feeling down as it seems it is always an after thought for the other mmos. Funny thing, I finally got around to playing Oblivion and I swear they got that old EQ feeling down pat. Their first person view rates right up there with EQ's and their third person view looks like it was taken right out of EQ history (when they finally implemented it). Partly for me, the first person view is, in part, what made the world so dangerous. Things could walk right up on you and you would never see it coming. And while there was a LOT of loading screens in EQ, each of those areas had their own, very distinct feel to them that has never been duplicated by any other mmo. All these so called seemless worlds lack character. All the instancing (I am a fan of instancing to a certain degree) has taken away much of the comradery that was there in EQ. People standing around cheering you on as your group is taking on something huge or getting adds and seeing them peel the adds off so that you could continue the fight, Knowing full well that if your group dies, they are liable to die just from the proximity they are to you. Seeing an entire group get charmed by the hags and be dragged down into the basement to be killed one by one as the charm is released. Helping that group get back to their bodies to recover their equipment. There has been no other game that has given the people that true sense of community, again, in my opinion. I still get chills when I think back and remember the fire giants yelling to the zone, You will not EVADE me Ebilena! (Yes I played as a female toon on what was my third character at the time). The yells in the zone from other people cheering me and my group on as we are trying to battle our way to the dragon. Watching my enchanter friend charm the head fire giant and then when it was over, immediately die in one swooping hit after his charm wore off. You can't get feeling in todays games. Most everything dies in seconds in todays games compared to fights lasting 30 minutes or more. I got hundreds of stories I could tell you from that game just from the first two years of its existance. I can't come up 20 in all the other mmo's that I have played combined since then. yes it was a harsh game. Death sucked big time, having to get your body and your stuff back after dieing sucked even worse. But one other thing was in that game that is not in any of todays mmos and that is honest to god FEAR. EQ was a game that demanded respect from its players or they would be punished severely. Fear pushed you to be cautious and fear pushed you into excitement at the same time, to see what was around that next corner or what was around that next tree. Could you survive it, would you be able to run from it, It was a true, you versus environment type game. Sadly though, The kids of today will probably never get to experience that true rush ever again. And to me, that is the biggest crime against players that the devs have done to todays mmo players. If your only defense for trolling or hatred is a stupid tag line, Then you should quit life. |
